Assuming Verizon followed the letter of the law that allowed them to have this writeoff why should Verizon be punished for the poor business decisions made by someone else?
That sounds almost as silly and preposterous as forcing US taxpayers to bail out banks that made bad loans to people who should not have been borrowing in the first place.

Kind of like a company that was allowed an aquisition in the first place. Fairpoint should have never been allow to aquire Verizons unwanted territories. The regulators that allowed this to happen should be fired, and billboards itemizing this fiasco should be erected in areas that Frontier is looking to aquire from Verizon.

The hundreds of millions of dollars in bonuses paid to the VZ executives, since the formation of the company, would more than have paid for the maintenance of the copper infrastructure and the deployment of DSL deeper into rural areas. The lack of common sense regulations, equally applied to the cable cos and telcos is what is truly hurting the industry. As long as the regulatory bodies can be coerced into adopting policies that favor the companies interests over the consumer interests, this BS will continue. | |
