iPhone MMS Dropping Early For Some
Assuming if by 'early' you really mean late...
by Karl Bode 09:59AM Monday Sep 14 2009
Yeah, we hear you. "Whoop-de-doo, an ancient technology. What's next, hieroglyphics scribbled on plant leaves?" But iPhone users should be happy to know that several users on AT&T have written in to note that MMS functionality has finally dropped for some iPhone users. We'd say it dropped two weeks early, given AT&T's proclaimed September 25 arrival date, but it's more like two years late. Reports of the "early" MMS functionality first surfaced on the blog Mediate, and seem to be confirmed by a handful of users on Twitter. No update yet for us here in the New York area. How about you?

Haven't noticed it here in ATL...

But wasn't looking for it either..... MMS or texting isn't important to me at all.

Tried this method...

And for me I get a sending error. The progress bar goes 4/5 of the way complete, then the error pops up.

Why I hate AT&T.

I was just down in South America for a week, and happened to have a 3gs unlocked and since I didn't want to be roaming at 3 dollars a minute I bought a local pre-paid sim card to my surprise as soon as I popped the SIM in, the MMS option became available. Furthermore the carrier offered prepaid customers a data option for $10 pesos (US$3.50) / 24 hours / 1 gig download.

I was there for 5 days, spent 50 pesos (or 13 dollars), had 5 gigs worth of download, would use skype over the cellular network to call back home (which I did very often). Was using SlingPlayer, was emailing pictures, at night at the hotel would stream movies and there was never an issue.

I really don't know what they're doing differently in Argentina (MoviStar), but I did notice speeds of 3Mbits a times both while tethering or using the SIM card in my unlocked USB Cell modem.

To make a long story short, why do I have to travel to Argentina in order to get deals like the one I got, and not here at home? Why can't AT&T keep up with other carriers?

they do it b/c they can. they have stockholders to protect afterall. and I am sure that AT&T in Argentina is a different entire company than AT&T in the US.

Re: Why I hate AT&T.

Actually, the correct answer is that American wireless consumers are a bunch of nutted sheep who continue to pay for substandard service at inflated prices, so why would any company do anything but just take the money and whistle on the way to the bank? Until the money dries up there is no incentive to improve anything.

So if you pay AT&T or any other wireless carrier for crap service, you are directly at fault.

With 4 major carriers, we ought to have the option of picking at least one good carrier, but we don't. They conspire to overcharge. If you go to other countries, you also usually have several carriers on "standard" GSM networks that you can just buy a SIM for. Here, there's only two compatible networks.

You can't really fault customers when we have no good choices. I do my part by refusing to pay for unlimited texting.

I got mine working yesterday!

I was running 3.0 with the 5.0 ipcc file an updated to 3.1 with the new 5.1 ipcc and everything is working great. I did have to change some of my carrier settings to get it to work though. So far I've sent and recieved about 90 mms's so far. I'm just glad to finally have it working.

Edit: btw I'm in Central PA.

90 MMSs in 1 day. And people wondered why AT&T was reluctant to turn this on. Did you attach a lot of large pics to those messages?

Lol, most were only around 25-50 kB's. Some of the ones I received with audio contained audio files around 75-100kB's. One thing I don't like about pictures with audio is you can't view the image and listen to the audio at the same time.

Yay ... not

It's too little too late for me. It will be nice when it comes along, but I've had too many problems with the AT&T network and my iPhone itself. And they both only seem to be getting worse.

Re: Yay ... not

I really understand where you're coming from. I got my MMS working early and I have to say I'm not impressed with it at all. My biggest gripe is how it handles animated .gif files that have sound in the background. Any other phone I've had will play the animted .gif while at the same time play the sound file in the background. The iPhone doesn't do that. I was told it would....O_o. Anyway, what it does, when you're looking at the .gif in the message thread, it will animate, however, when you click on the .gif, it no longer animates. The sound file doesn't play in the background either. You have to click on the sound file and it brings up a blank screen and tries to play the file. Making the whole point of that MMS pointless because it doesn't play the way it was intended. I just thought with all the time Apple took to ready 3.0 and MMS that they could've that part right.

Really? Damn. I have been on the edge of going to T-Mo or Sprint and either getting the MyTouch or Hero. Since its all Android, I'm wondering if those phones will behave in the same way as yours then.

You would make a decision on what smartphone to buy based on whether animated Gifs will play seamlessly on the phone? I don't get it. How important is having that feature?

Not necessarily. It is probably more important to me than most people because I actually do get quite a bit of those kind of MMS. I just really wish it would've worked. LOL, that's all.

Just my two cents' worth...

I notice a lot of folks are rather elitist about MMS. I have a daughter in Florida who likes to stay in touch by sending me pics of things she is doing and things that are going on in her life. She has a little $49 piece of garbage that can do that. I, with my big-time Iphone, have been unable to send or receive those bits of info, and that is VERY important to me and my wife. MMS is a way of staying in touch easily and efficiently with family members around the country. So yes, it is important, and it's about time (actually years late) that AT&T step up and stop treating us like second-class citizens. They might re-read the old story about the "golden goose".

serious question: why did you get an iPhone if MMS and keeping in touch with your daughter that way is so important? surely you knew that MMS was not available and wouldn't be for a while.

I completely agree. It's not that AT&T/Apple claimed they had MMS yet didn't deliver. Customers knew that this feature was not offered yet customers still purchased it.

If you "relay" on MMS, don't get the iPhone.

Maybe they would "relay" the picture via email and not "rely" on MMS on the iPhone?

Additional question I had was for the first two generations of Iphone apple said they didn't find MMS important? (I even saw a youtube video blasting someone that said E-mail was better).

I think this was the video if memory serves.

Why not have her phone EMAIL the pics to you? All MMS phones can send to an email address.

MMS since launch in Canada, but expensive

We've had MMS since the 3GS launched here in Canada, but at $0.50 per message, why would anybody use it?

If you want to send a video, you can upload to youtube and then email the link, and that's free.

Your right, it really boils down to if you have an iPhone there are multiple other methods of sharing something with someone that are all more efficient than Text/MMS

I'm willing to bet in the future you see certain capabilities only supported by iPhone to iPhone interaction, hence why in the contacts app there is a choice for "iphone" as the type of number it is...they made it a point to distinguish it from just "cell"

Get over it people!

I got my iPhone knowing it didn't have MMS capabilities. I bought the iPhone because I liked the look and what it does already that many other phones have issues doing. On other PDA phones I the browser was always limited. On iPhone I can go anywhere with no issues.

As for speed of data, I surf the net, use pandora with HD streaming on and stream live tv with audio from my house through ORB without any issues. I also control my computer through Jaadu VNC again with no issues. I have nothing to worry about when it comes to data caps either.

I rarely use voice service. Don't like talking on the phone a lot.
