Before Sprint and Clearwire created the new Clearwire joint venture, Sprint had already launched Mobile WiMax service in the Baltimore market under the XOHM brand name. As of yesterday, Clearwire started the migration of XOHM Customers to the Clear WiMAX network. Users write in to note that Clearwire is sending impacted users an email which includes a link to this URL. According to the e-mail, Clear will "flip the switch" on December 2nd and is asking users to order new modems as soon as possible. The replacement modem(s) are free.

Official?

So does this mean Sprint is officially admitting their name has been tarnished and would turn potential customers off?

It's changing from Xohm to Clearwire. But don't let that interrupt your silly Sprint bashing.

I'm not bashing Sprint, on the contrary I like Sprint. Feel free to search my post history for proof.

That's okay, it was a genuine question. I can understand wanting to consolidate everything under one name, but I (personally) think Sprint has the stronger brand.

wimax is a joke

Shows there still is a million incompatible Wimax implementations (wimax standard + band plan). So much for "open" technology.

Re: wimax is a joke

No it doesn't. The WiMAX systems work on the same frequency. It's just that equipment standardization is a good thing, and Xohm uses more ZyXEL stuff while Clear uses Motorola. If everyone has the same home modem, crap is much easier to troubleshoot.

And they aren't even charging for the new device. Sounds OK to me.

You can't take patcat too seriously on this subject. For some inane reason he's a notorious Wimax hater.

Not really. WiMax is a standard. Actually, a group of standards, but standards none the less.

The "million incompatible WiMax implementations" are using pre-certification gear. Just like with the 802.11n...vendors have been selling pre-cert gear for years and most provide a firmware upgrade to bring the hardware in compliance once the standard has been ratified.
