Google Exec Wants To Be Vermont Governor And is busy promising broadband to everyone... Monday Jan 04 2010 11:41 EDT As an interesting little political side note, Business Week notes that Google's 40-year-old head of community affairs Matt Dunne is making a play for the Governor of Vermont -- and is promising to bring broadband to "every corner" of the state. Along with Maine and New Hampshire, Vermont has some of the lower broadband penetration rates in the nation. Their broadband fortunes were recently made substantially worse by Fairpoint Communications, who acquired Verizon's unwanted New England DSL network, then subsequently imploded under the not so watchful eye of Vermont regulators. With all their problems, Vermont is home to a few interesting broadband efforts, including ValleyFiber and Doctor Timothy Nulty, who has consistently argued that if done right, bringing fiber to rural Vermont can be perfectly economical. |
