Insight Moves Closer To 50 Mbps Speeds
Picks Lexington, Kentucky to get first all-digital treatment

Last fall Insight Communications announced they'd be launching a new 30 Mbps speed tier based on the DOCSIS 2.0 standard -- which certainly tides over many subscribers' need for speed -- but the company didn't give a specific update on when they'd be getting around to making the leap to DOCSIS 3.0. Insight Communications CEO Michael Willner got a little more specific in a blog post this week -- highlighting how the company would be targeting Lexington, Kentucky as the first market of many to be going all digital, which will lead the way to faster speeds and more HD channels. Says Wilner:

In early May, we will begin an all-digital upgrade for all our customers in Lexington, called Digital 5.10. Channels that are currently transmitted in analog will be provided in digital after this conversion. What this means is that every TV set in Lexington will need either a digital tuner or a mini digital transport adapter (DTA) in order to continue seeing your favorite channels after the digital cable upgrade. The DTA's are similar to those that were offered to customers who wanted to continue to receive their over-the-air broadcast signals after that industry transitioned to all-digital.

According to Willner, once that update is complete the company will launch their "Digital 10.0" upgrade project, which will deliver roughly 100 HD channels, a 50 Mbps broadband service, and a multi-room DVR.

50 Mbps sounds nice but what's the upload speed?

Insight tends to be stingy on uploading speeds.

Most of my family has no trouble getting their 1Mb upload speeds according to the speeds tests I've run. 1Mb ain't saying much these days though...

EVERYONE is stingy with the upload.
do you see anybody giving fios type upload rates?

I'm surpised Insight still offers service in Ohio and hasn't sold the market to either WOW or TWC.

 I don't get why Insight is in Columbus... TWC owns the lines and leases them to Insight. Until this changes, we aren't getting anything since neither of them have any incentive to spend money on upgrades.

Not really.

Insight is an overbuilder in Columbus. The only thing Insight leases is the RR backbone and the ISP due to not providing their own in Ohio.

But you are right. Insight needs to start building their own ISP in Ohio or face getting hit hard by people moving to TWC in terms of upgrading after it starts to happen.

since they get there backbone from roadrunner I would say the 30 package would be 30/2 or 30/5 and with 50 package if they are willing offer that that would be 50/2 or 50/5.

TWC only provides the ISP portion of Insignt Ohio. The network is still Insight's. With that I'm sure after their agreement is up they could bring InsightBB to Ohio, but i don't see that happening.

Is it going to be more hype??

I love the idea of whats coming .. but with whats happened with the failure of the 30 service and the lack of phone service in most areas. Im concerned on where this will go. I really want to believe it but till I see results its just hype.

Of those "100 HD channels" I wonder how many will be non channels like the "OnDemand HD" channels they have now.

Either Coach Cal recruited you to be a part of his #1 class for 2010 and got the FIRST 50 mbps trial, or Doyle threatened to move all his campus video services away from you...and I am thinking that latter!

this is a pretty bold move to keep milking that turnip. 20,000+ students is a lot to lose!

I have DSL+Dish HD in Lex right now, at 12/768 which I am totally pleased with. But this gould be a game changer.
