Time Warner Cable Launches 50 Mbps In Charlotte
In addition to a new 'Signature Home' bundle
Several users have dropped us a line to note that Time Warner Cable is now offering 50 Mbps downstream, 5 Mbps upstream service in Charlotte. The service is normally $99 a month, though one user tells us he was able to bundle 50 Mbps service, cable TV service, and unlimited phone service for $179.95 a month. Looking at the Time Warner Cable Charlotte website, it appears they're calling this new bundle their "Signature Home" service. Time Warner Cable's "tactically" upgrading DOCSIS 3.0 in markets where they face competition. In Charlotte, they're of course aiming this 100 Mbps bundle at AT&T's U-Verse, which tops out at between 18-24 Mbps -- with no plans to bump this speed anytime soon.

Wish they would upgrade here in Kernersville.

I would be happy just to have a better upload here in Kernersville, I'm stuck with a lousy 512Kbps upload.

Try 384kbps here in Columbia, SC.

We have AT&T U-verse here too, hopefully TWC will get off their lazy monopolistic ass and upgrade to DOCSIS 3.0. This market was one of their very first to use switched digital video.

Actually they're aiming this at Comporium, who they're now competing with on the border in the Charlotte. Comporium is coming across the border in some new developments and Time Warner has come across from Pineville into Comporium's territory in Fort Mill/York County. All greenfield construction.

Comporium presently offers 15x15 for $74.95/mo in their fiber areas. 10x10 and 12x12 cost less. (Their DSL and cable modem areas have slower speeds.)

I would like to see Goldsboro upgraded as well! But since we sit on the very short end of the S***t stick, we'll keep on waiting.

prices need to come down

time warner, at&t and comcast have very little incentive to lower prices and compete on price (even in the places where they overlap deployed footprint).

Re: prices need to come down

If enough people are paying the prices that they all charge in overlap areas, why would they want to lower the price?

They'd just be throwing money away.

If people would decide not to pay, then they'd probably be forced to lower the prices. But you can't blame the ISP's for their prices when enough people are willing to pay and are justifying their price.

You can't expect people to go without something that has become so integrated into their lifestyles. Never in the history of the "free market" has a sizable enough group of people arbitrarily decided not paying a single company and degrading their day to day lives was a better idea than paying the monopolist. Humans aren't borgs after all.

Very true. The problem is one of competition. The telecoms and cable industry have managed to have the regulatory environment set to their advantage. Regulation is good except when its influenced by industry for their own benefit to eliminate competition. Which by the way is not a principle of the free market. If there was a true free market the competitors wouldn't be able to lobby for laws in their favor. I suppose one could turn that around to mean that consumers would not get regulation in their favor. True. But a completely unfettered market is unwise to begin with. It is true as demonstrated by the current climate of Broadband in the US and historic examples like standard oil. Allowing muncipalities to develop their own systems is a step in the right direction. Unfortunately the telecoms and the cable industry lobby against this all the time. Unfettered access to a market for the few telecoms and cable companies without any competition is their goal. Fat profits, high prices, poor customer service in another country, and slow connections. Can I say more.

not just 50mbit

although the 50/5 internet is definitely the most exciting the site also mentions "Whole house DVR" and "look back" which are both new technologies. I think the look back sounds pretty cool - watch a show you forgot to DVR 3 days after it aired?

Re: not just 50mbit

I'll let you know how the whole house DVR works out this evening.

It's 50Mbps. Think Karl had a typo there.

Look Back isn't a new technology. It's three years old, but in typical TWC fashion has taken that long to actually be deployed in Charlotte.

And just like the rest of the interactive services it will be left to sit and rot because once TWC announce something to the shareholders their job is done. Content deals and channel agreements are left to flounder.

One Step forward

I just hope that TWC fixes their other problems. I don't know about Charlotte but up here in Greensboro their digital cable offerings are unreliable. Anywhere I have been in this city the signal breaks up constantly with pixelating frequently and some channels completely gone for hours at a time. Furthermore, when this happens some of their models of cable boxes lock up and have to wait a while before you can restart them. I don't know whats up with all that. Perhaps their internet service is better. But in the UNC-G area they are known to have massive slowdowns in the evenings. I am very cautious about anything dealing with TWC which is why I don't have their service. I only wish AT&T would get on with their U-Verse stuff. Well, 6mpbs DSL is adequate for now. Faster upstream would be nice though.

TW Cable

Great..
Now Time Warner can provide their crappy service and numerous problems at twice the speed...
No Thanks.
Between the constant slow downs, the TV picture pixelating and freezing every night, and Time Warner telling me, "It's your TV", then missing 2 appointments, with their tech saying nobody was home, while I sat in the driveway waiting on them.
No Thanks.

I am running FROM Time Warner Cable as fast as I can.

OH...MY...GOD is this HOT!

WOW!

Pulling down speed tests of 49/5.1!

The whole home DVR thing is slick! Record a show on one box and it shows up in the list on the other box as if it had recorded it! SLLLICK!

Had service installed on Friday - - Great so far

Just had this service installed on Friday. The tech did a great job. After testing the line and fixing a few line problems everything is up and running great. As the post said above, "This is Hot !". I'm getting 49~/4.9~ Internet. The tech took around 3+ hrs. It would have been shorter if not for the main line to the home failing. But after a new line put in place things are fine. As for the Cable TV end of it, nothing new as I had Cable HD DVR in the past. Ditto for the Phone. Overall I'm very pleased with the install and the service, going on Day two. One last thing, The Look Back service only works on Two (2) channels right now. The tech did say this should increase as time goes on. Again I'm very happy with with this service. Only time will tell if it was worth the $$$.

Re: Had service installed on Friday - - Great so far

A lot of you miss the point of what this service really entails.. it's not just 50x5 and whole room DvR its more than that entirely.. You are given a premier highly trained personal tech support rep/Technician who will do everything in their power to ensure that you have a great experience..

This goes well beyond anything you know about Time Warner Cable and is aimed at elevating things to a whole new level..

Disappointing TWC (so sad!)

While I have had service (bundle-phone,internet,cable)installed for a month now in Raeford, NC and have had nothing but problems. I switched from satellite because I was tired of service going out everytime there was a storm. But with TWC my service goes out all the time randomly, channels freezes, "please wait" messages, and it's clear-blue-& 82 outside. I've called 3 times and they reset my box and said the signal was great, but it kept on freezing-up. They sent a technician out and he replaced the cables and box and it's even worse. Now more channels are freezing-up. Called again last night and they are sending a tech out again today. This will be the last time they send a tech out cause i'm pulling the plug with TWC. At least with satellite I knew when the service was going out. The whole point of going TWC was to eliminate the "Break-in-Service" cause the cable is a direct feed to my house. Now, my digital phone is not working, tired calling my home number and it kept telling me my number was not a valid number. The only thing that works now is the internet, unless that is the next item to give me problems. I'll be going back to satelite and landline phone & internet cause I know the technician won't be able to fix the problem today. The last tech replaced everything he could and there's nothing wrong with my tv or home wiring because I've had satellite for 5 years and never had a problem with any of the five tv other than service going out when a storm moved in.

Charlotte University Area

Just called about this and it looks like the University area (in Charlotte) will be upgraded between September 10-15. I'll be calling back after that to sign up!
