Telus First To Offer IPTV Via Xbox 360
And is offering a free 360 for two-year contract broadband customers
by Karl Bode Friday 06-Aug-2010 tags: Video · business · alternatives · cable
For a very long time we've been hearing that IPTV or satellite operators would offer consumers the choice of using an Xbox 360 as a set top TV box. If you'll recall there was talk in 2006 of a DirecTV 360 blade that never materialized, and AT&T and Microsoft have been hinting at U-Verse to 360 set top functionality for several years without any product to show for it. This week a major carrier did finally begin using the 360 as an IPTV set top, but it happens to be Canadian telco Telus. According to Telus, users who go this route still need to have a HD DVR from Telus, and the service requires a personal visit from a Telus tech to configure the Xbox 360.

Eh

Will the cable company come and replace the box if it gets an RROD?!?!!?!?

In all seriousness though; kudos. This is a step in the right direction for consumer owned STBs

tech visit needed?

sound like a way to bill you more? Just hope for no outlet fee for this as well.

Setting up a 360.

Setting up an Xbox 360 isn't too hard, but if the tech sets up the 360 so that it connects the best to the network (preferably with Open NAT) and so that it runs at the highest possible HD quality possible for the TV, that would be nice. Many people tend to overlook such things if they aren't serious into gaming.

Any news on if they are handing out the new Xbox 360 Slim or no?

They aren't handing any 360s out at all, users still need to purchase their own 360.

The tech visit is to make sure it's networked properly (wired, not wireless) and to do the software configuration. It apparently requires a custom firmware.

STB Fee?

Does anyone know if they charge a monthly fee to use your Xbox as a STB?

If/When AT&T does this I would be all over it, but not if I have to pay a monthly fee to use something I already own.

For telus they charge $50 dollar setup and 5 dollar monthly

WANT!

The perfect product would be IPTV + a la carte channel pricing.

Make it so!

A la carte is up to the content providers, not the cable cos/telcos.

Until the content providers stop forcing bundles of channels onto the carriers, just so they can get the channels that everyone wants to watch, there will be no a la carte.

The best you can do for a la carte at this point is Netflix or Hulu+, and that's only for old shows or day old shows.

telus IPTV

Would you need to have your main TV/cable/Satellite source to be the Telus TV as well. For example, I am a Shaw Direct User. Would the Telus PVR hook up to my Shaw Direct receiver and I get that TV.... or would I have to cancel Shaw Direct and sign up for Telus Optik TV???

media center

I already use my xbox 360 with windows media center.

Personally I don't think it's that good of an STB. The main problem is that it is LOUD. Yes, even Jasper. The newest ones I heard were quiet, however.

The other problem is that it looks like a game console, not a piece of AV equipment.

Two big negatives in my book.

Give me a small, silent, good looking 360 and you'll have a winner.

Microsoft's ultimate goal

I think this is the ultimate goal that Microsoft had in mind when they originally created the XBox.

television on xbox live

this is pointless.. if you have to use one of there cable boxes it ruins the whole thing. i want to watch tv directly from my xbox live account.. no added fees for hardware and installation.. then the added fee for the television service.

after modding the first xbox you could get free tv shows streamed to your box.. no commercials and no extra monthly fees.

i'm better off dling my favorite shows to my pc and streaming them directly to my xbox from there.
