Netflix recently launched a standalone broadband video streaming service that wasn't tied to their DVD rental service. The catch? They only launched this in Canada but not in the United States -- where Netflix last year oddly claimed there "wasn't much interest" for this kind of service. Apparently Netflix has changed their mind, and told attendees of their earnings conference call today that they're testing such a service now, and "if our results are as strong as we think they will be, then we will look to start this offering later in this Q4." Netflix recently upgraded their streaming service to 1080p with 5.1 surround, albeit first for PS3 customers. All of these are nice features, assuming U.S. consumers aren't too self absorbed (to use Netflix's CEO's words) to notice them when they launch.
