T-Mobile Tethering Plan Dropping November 3
$15, needs minimum $20 unlimited data plan
Earlier this month rumors began to surface that the G2 on T-Mobile was getting an upgrade that would enable tethering, though T-Mobile quickly stated they had nothing to announce. Now the Boy Genius Report has posted a leaked memo showing that T-Mobile will be launching a new Tethering and Wi-Fi Sharing Add-On on November 3. Of course many handsets include tethering functionality out of the box, and T-Mobile has historically had kind of a "you don't talk about fight club" approach to letting users quietly tether while not officially supporting it. Now, T-Mobile's following other carriers and will be charging you a $15 monthly fee to use your phone as a modem. To sign up for the plan, customers will need to subscribe to an unlimited web plan of $19.95 or higher.

The Monopolizers strike again.

The monopolizers are up to their old tricks. Remember whenever you have a limited availability product that uses public resources and customers want that product, use that fact to gouge the customer.

Re: The Monopolizers strike again.

Easy way to solve problems of heavy data users flooding cell towers and also end all the nuisance fees. Have a UNIFORM and rising data fee per GB.

Example fee structure:
Unlimited voice calls $20/mo

Data fees billed ONLY for GBs used.
$10/GB up to 5 GB/mo
$20/GB 5GB to 10GB/mo
$40/GB 10GB to 20GB/mo
No service at all after 20GB/mo

No tether fees. No SMS fees. No email fees.

This must be the most and perhaps only sensible thing you have ever posted. I would love a plan something like that. I would even be happy with less than unlimited voice at $20, perhaps 400 minutes and bump unlimited to $30..

Except the abusers are still about 1% so enacting this may have little revenue to justify it. Carriers usually like blanket policies that make them money no-matter what instead.

Even then, the USA still pays less in unlimited data fees than most of the world -- behind Japan, UK, etc...

Why can't they solve the problem of bandwidth hogs with QoS instead of overages and data caps? Do the existing QoS solutions not scale that well or do they just see this as another revenue source?

is my math right then?

$35/month for data gets you unlimited data and tethering? it goes against my principles but that isn't a horrible price. especially since I'm paying $35/month for data right now.

Well not really.
With Tmo is it 5GB and then throttled and from what I have read it will be reaaaaaaalllllllllllly slow. So it is as unlimited as the speed will allow, but not unlimited at full speed.
And yes this is supposed to be the same even with the tethering.

They don't offer a $20/mo data plan unless you're a loyalty customer.
That policy, however, is the same as their monthly webconnect (data stick). Hit 5GB, you get throttled.
Except that it's probably still cheaper to tether a phone than it is to use a data stick each month.

In 3g to 3g comparisons, T-Mobile blows AT&T out of the water. I don't have any data for other providers.

Not where T-Mobile is still GPRS only and indoors.

There's also PDANet, which is effectively free if you use ssl tunneling on a port other than 443 (the only port it blocks if you use the free version).

All of my phones can tether right out of the box, without rooting or jailbreaking.

Yes you are right. Thing is my phone is a HTC Hero (android) which was stuck with android 2.1 because HTC decided we would not be getting 2.2

Let me give a little info on tethering for those who wish to use it but obviously don't want to pay extra for it (you are already paying for your data plan)

If you have an iPhone then you have to jailbreak to get tethering.
If you have android 2.1 you can get PdaNet and you can tether using a USB cable without rooting. If you root then you can get Wireless Tethering and your phone acts as a wifi hotspot.
If you have android 2.2 then google already implemented wireless tethering as part of the OS.

I put CyanogenMod6 on my Hero which is 2.2 and of course I now have wireless tethering.

Theres many options, you don't have to pay this outrageous fees on top of your data plan...

isn't the G2 the one with the "deepfreeze rootkit"?

"unlimited"?

Well I am annoyed that I already pay $30 for "unlimited" data, now I might have to pay more? I hate being nickel and dimed.

But how they will enforce it?

I mean are they going to sniff every single data packet to detect if someone with a proper data plan is using his non-TMO smartphone with his laptop?

That's kinda anal and you can bet EFF will move in as soon as they try to disconnect someone claiming this violation without providing ample evidence - logs etc - which will be ground for a juicy privacy fight and grand-scale damage to the currently very positive T-Mobile brand.

Non-subsidized phones don't have this requirement. If you have a non-TMO phone, you don't have to have a smartphone data plan, and you don't have to pay for tethering.

Been doing it for years on T-mo.
----------------- note IP

Have never had it added to package.
It's not even slightly difficult to do.
Never had a overage, never been capped or throttled.

I have said this for years, but no one listens to me.
If you use phone as a modem (why?) then they may be able to detect it, but if you use it as a NAT device then they have nothing.

There is no way to have any evidence "beyond a reasonable doubt" that I tethered without actually looking over my shoulder. Deep packet inspection would only reveal that there is "non normal" traffic activity. But, what is "normal" traffic and who defines it?

Tethering Ripoff

Yes indeedy, TMobile USA has cast off it's German roots and has become Americanized. Play the nickel-and-diming game just like everybody else. Problem is, TMobile is NOT VZW or AT&T. They are the small-fry company in US market, and are LOSING customers, not gaining them, They need to incentivize customers, not drive them away with "addons" and extra fees. I've always hated tethering surcharges as a matter of principle, as most phones can tether out of the box unless the carrier either gimps the phone's tethering function like Sprint or deauthenticates non-paying customers via NMAI gateways like Verizon does. If my WinMo tethering fails on November 3, I'm outta there at end of contract. If I know I'm gonna get reamed going in, then at least I should be on a better network.

No change, here...

When I got my TP2, they said there was one data plan - $35/month. So, it appears as though I'll be paying the same, but actually having it supported (which hasn't been an issue, as I've been using my TP2 to tether at will anyway).

Thats not bad news ....

$15 is still less for tethering than $20 with ATT (I don't know how much Verizon wants). And you get more buckets of data.

Any tethering plan beats out 100Mb prepaid one-day only plan (10 days with Virgin Mobile) for $10/$15. Yes you have $40 unlimited 3 g with Virgin (ok, with "you don't talk about fight club" approach its 5GB limit) but together with phone you would have to pay at least $55 for data.

Granted you have unlimited on 4G and faster speeds with Clear/Rover but not only coverage is more limited (which is not big deal for me because I am covered) but its more spotty than 3G and you get disconnected while moving!!

So uhm... Can I use this as an excuse to get out of my contract then? I have about a year left and I'm thinking about jumping ship to Sprint.

Dude you will most likely be grandfathered at least until your contract expires. I also personally don't see really any improvement in jumping from T-Mobile to Sprint (most people do other way and T-Mobile has better customer service) unless Sprint has better coverage in your area. In NYC, all carriers should have good coverage in your area.
