AT&T Plans VoLTE In 2013
Has Seven Year Road Map To 'Evolved Voice Services'
by Karl Bode Wednesday 16-Feb-2011 tags: business · wireless
AT&T's been a step or two behind Verizon when it comes to LTE, something AT&T feels is justified given the faster speeds their HSPA+ service provides over Verizon EVDO. Regardless, AT&T still sits about a year or two behind Verizon on the LTE front. Verizon's already covered about a quarter of the country's population with LTE, plans to have the entire network built by 2013, and this week received a lot of attention for their plans to implement voice over LTE in 2012. Not to be left out, AT&T says that VoLTE will show up in 2013 as part of a seven year roadmap to "evolve voice services on its network" which, like Verizon, ends in the death of older unused platforms:

VoLTE is part of AT&T’s seven-year roadmap to evolve voice services on its network. Much of the work involves deploying more efficient and versatile technologies and transitioning customers to them. The goal is to consolidate disparate voice platforms to a common or converged core that will provide more flexibility on different types of user interfaces. At the end of the seven years, AT&T intends to shut down old platforms like Time-Division Multiplexing or TDM, which operators used to migrate from analog to digital technology transmissions.

AT&T insists they will allow LTE VoIP apps from outside companies and suggests they'll offer some of their own ahead of official VoLTE standard support in 2013.

Re: Funny...

Or maybe the VoLTE topic was exhausted in the VZW thread?

Re: Funny...

Personally I could care less. In the end, it's VoIP service anyway.. VoLTE, to me anyway, is yet again just some other acronym that doesn't need to be... much less talked about to death.

Also starting to notice that many of the "news" articles that are being posted lately really are not along the lines of consumer quality.. such as the Verizon iPhone units sold.. who here is an analyst and who really cares?

In the end, a cell phone is a cell phone.. voice is voice and how it's carried I could care less. I just want to hit the numbers, press send, and make my call. If they could get a carrier pigeon to carry a voice conversation fast enough, I'd not care.

Eventually, there will be another technology a step above LTE.. and I'm sure voice will be carried over it, as well. What's the point of endless "news" threads about that as well? They get a little redundant.

Re: Funny...

If the carrier pigeon drops out of the sky, dead, does that make it an AT&T dropped call?

.. or Sprint, Verizon, Tmo.. and the rest..

I'm still trying to figure out what all these AT&T dropped calls are.. In my area I've yet to have one.

Re: Funny...

What does that have to do with VoLTE discussions? Everyone already knows VZW's network is handling the iPhone just fine and that theoretically AT&T's network is capable of providing more bandwidth than VZW's.

Re: Funny...

And the FCC is theoretically capable of making correct decisions based on consumers fairness, but that hasn't stopped them has it?

Re: Funny...

The FCC has already made more decisions than it should have, but that's not related to VoLTE either

That or the fact that it has been posted in other news outlets for hours now.

It's because there's no hope for AT&T.

Empty promises is what they deliver.

att

Its at&t. I don't really hold up much hope for them when it comes to pushing out new services.. They took forever and three days to build out 3g service, and they dare claimed its faster? Hell, probably because noone could use it outside the tight cluster area.. My wife has sense migrated away from att on her cell, so i'm not sure what they have here now. I don't really care.. They can keep their 3g 5 gig cap over priced bull hockey..

If verizon's execs would wake up and smell the coffee on their lte network and price it at a usable price (where you can enjoy life, not only load one site a day with fears of overages), they could destroy ATT even in areas where dsl is established.. Alotta people have slow speeds on dsl,and would swapp in a second. Only if they could use the friggin service...

Sure...

"the entire network built..."

Just like I'm still part of that entire network of EDGE coverage.

Re: Sure...

AT&T claims the fastest network in the country ....
My results here in Sacramento (California's fourth largest metropolitan area) using an iPhone on 3G are:
Latency - 1384 ms
Download - 37K
Upload - 11K
If this is the FASTEST, what are Sprint, TMO and VZW speeds like?

Re: Sure...

May be that bad in california but here in central pa the only thing we got is ATT edge or verizons so called 3g. Sprint has terrible coverage here and tmo is just as bad.

On a side note one cant compare speeds if there isnt even a network in existence. There is quite a large population here.

it depends on part of the country and your area. I get similar slow speed in Chicago downtown Loop, but in suburbs I get near 5 MB/s (1mb upload) with latency 150ms.

So?

As long as ATT has low data caps, I don't give a damn how fast their connections are.
