Shaw Bumps Extreme Tier to 25 Mbps
But Keeps 100 GB Monthly Usage Cap the Same
Users in our Shaw forum direct our attention to the fact that the Canadian cable operator has announced (pdf) that they're bumping the downstream speed of their Extreme tier from 15 Mbps to 25 Mbps, while giving the upstream speed a slight bump from 1 Mbps to 2.5 Mbps. "This upgrade is the first step as Shaw looks to unveil its new Internet packaging in early summer," says the company. Shaw's enthusiastic press release forgets to inform customers that despite the faster speeds, the company is keeping their 100GB monthly usage cap the same. Shaw's currently offering the tier at a six month introductory rate of $30 Canadian, after which it's $50 if bundled with other services -- or $60 standalone. Shaw recently indicated the company may implement usage-based billing in late May or early June.

Re: Whats the point in upgrading?

Anyone not exceeding the cap won't be for a lack of speed.

Speeds are useless if you can't use them

Great higher speed to rake up the UBB bills in the future....
I have a feeling shaw will have to match 250gig limit that Telus has on their comparable package.

I am kinda surprised they did not just make the tier 30megs download and 3 upload with a 300gig cap so that Telus could not even compete.

Pfff

Maybe they should work the other way. Give everyone 100 Mbit down 10 mbit up and you pay for how much you download.

Example
100/10 with 1 GB - $25
100/10 with 5 GB - $30
100/10 with 60 GB - $50
100/10 with 200 GB - $100

It's like a double hit, why give us speed if we can't use it anyways.

F them!

Raise your speeds all you want, you continue with this low cap and UBB bs then you don't deserve a dime out of me and hopefully many others feel the same

»Shaw Expands 100Mbps Availability [31] comments

According to an announcement this morning by Canadian cable operator Shaw, the company is expanding the availability of their 100Mbps downstream, 5Mbps upstream "High-Speed Nitro" tier into Saskatchewan. Though the Shaw press release brags about braving a bad economy to offer "more value" for consumers, the 100Mbps offering is for now largely marketing fodder -- given it's unlikely that anyone facing financial struggles will be able to afford the tier's $249.95 per month Canadian ($204 U.S.) price tag. The "value" of the offering is also suspect, given the tier comes with a 200GB cap the company's website insists is "perfect for those who have multiple home computers and perform a variety of media-intensive activities at the same time."
