Verizon Wireless: Say Bye Bye to Unlimited Data
Tiered Pricing, Family Data Buckets Coming This Summer

Over the last few years, Verizon's been repeatedly tinkering and experimenting with their wireless data pricing -- trying to figure out what customers are willing to pay. They've also hinted dozens of times that when LTE finally launched for smartphones, they'd be tinkering with new, more usage-based pricing options. When Verizon recently finally got the iPhone, they kept unlimited data pricing, but stated the move was only temporary, the company clearly trying to lure AT&T customers away and get them under long-term contract.

This week finds Verizon once again stating that unlimited data will die off this summer, replaced by more tiered pricing potentially based on both speed and usage. On the positive side, Verizon's also planning to embrace "bucket 'o bytes" family plans, where like voice minutes -- a family can pull from a set pool of data usage. Details however remain a bit sketchy:
quote:
After this change the company will look to soften the blow by offering more options such as family plans for data services, Chief Financial Officer Fran Shammo told the Reuters Global Technology Summit. While families can share a bucket of minutes for phone calls today, each family member with a smartphone has to pay $30 per month each for data services. If they own a tablet computer they pay another separate data fee.
Verizon's LTE pricing so far hasn't been particularly innovative, and with overages up to $10 per gigabyte it hasn't been particularly economical, either. The shift toward family plans suggests some creative thinking, but the quality of the new pricing will depend, as usual, on how low the caps are and how steep the per-byte overages will be.

Sprint

Here I come. The unlimited data with VZW was the only thing keeping me around. Its amazing how cellphone habits have changed. I have some family plan, 700 minutes. You know how many I used last month? 31.

Agree'd, if they force me out of my unlimited data on my new Thunderbolt I'll be gone from VZW and most likely going with Sprint, I think Sprint roams on VZW's network right?

I just got an Inspire phone through ATT, got the 2 gig data plan, which isn't much, but between the wifi, and pass through internet option ( kind of like tethering ) don't use much of the wireless other than calls. this country sucks when it comes to wireless.

Agreed. Everyone that has unlimited now will be grandfathered. Though, at some point, they'll figure out a way to get you un-grandfathered.

Should that point come, I'll just get a plain ole no-data-at-all-phone.

It's like my 3G data card. Grandfathered in to the unlimited plan. They'll have to pry that account from my cold, dead hands. And if they do, I'll just turn it off.

I refer to that as a dumb phone, wink wink, was thinking of doing that my self. When the $hit hits the fan with these unrealistic caps, maybe just maybe they will get the point. not holding breath

This assumes the availability of a no-data phone and an no-data plan. The last time I swapped phones on my ~$8/mo. 50 minute legacy employee plan, they informed me that I had just performed my last swap. You had better believe I take good care of that phone.

I wouldn't be so sure about the grandfathering. I just received an email from verizon about my account that says that they made a mistake with the original contract and it appears that they are trying to change the contract terms mid-stream. It will be interesting to see where this shim sham ploy will go!!!!!!!!!!!

I dunno. I would venture a guess that when my Thunderbolt craps out and I get, say, a Thunderbolt 2 that unlimited plan would transfer. Unless they do something like "get a hotspot, lose your unlimited plan" like AT&T does.

If I were to switch my 3G data card to a 4G card, then I get capped. The lady at the VZW store agreed with me that it'd be nuts to give up that plan I've got.

Re: Sprint

You'd probably get a refurb Thunderbolt. But what I am saying is, if you want to upgrade to a phone like uh Thunderbolt 2, it's likely you'd have to change to new data plan. If you keep your Thunderbolt for 5 years, you'll keep that unlimited plan.

That's how Sprint is doing with their $10 increase on data plan. My Samsung Moment is $30/mo until I upgrade to a new phone then I'll get $40/mo unlimited plan.

It will transfer because you are just changing phones. Once again, you are extending your existing contract. Now, if you change anything to do with your data plan, then that changes your contract.

Not always true. If you take the promo price for the phone- you lose your current contract and MUST sign a new one that is offered. if you pay full price for that phone then YES your current plan will be there. you can NOT transfer your current plan to a new phone that you get under promo. ALL carriers do not allow that and actually say "NEW contracts ONLY".

Now I have Verizon service for My Phone, I recently had to replace said phone at My own cost, As It had no insurance, the old phone had gotten washed by accident as I was in a hurry cause of some reasons that were compelling Me to hurry, In any case I replaced the phone with one I bought off of ebay($11.13 I think & that includes shipping), which works just fine, Now I don't have a data or internet plan as I just use the Samsung sch-u540 as a phone as that's all I need, I have a PC for internet after all. The used sch-u540 was put on My contract as if It was the original, Which still partly works, It just can't detect the Verizon network and It eats the battery like crazy, Even when the cover is closed as the phone stays on... So now I have a spare battery and battery cover. Of course service where I live could be better, But then I live under a metal roof which probably doesn't help much.

AT&T users are currently grandfathered in if they have unlimited data. Any change to a contract in the past is always considered to be a breech and you can opt out at that time for no penalty. Read up on the contract you signed through Verizon. Any change to the data portion is a change to your contract. Which is why Verizon will grandfather users in. All new contracts signed will be hit with the new structure. This is fine because not many people will hang around on the same contract. Some people will jump providers or drop data use.

Re: Sprint

Again; not true. Just because you change your DATA it is NOT required for the phone and is an Add-on service to the phone. It states that. You can change your data plan at anytime without changing your contract. All carriers and customers know that. The only thing is once you change to unlimited you can never get it back if its not offered.

Don't be in too much of a rush the Galaxy S II currently is a GSM only model phone and on evil ATT band none the less... ( dosen't mean they wont make a cdma version down the line).

Also im sure if Verizon wants to ( be dirty like ATT) they will change your TOS and wiggle in some BS if you upgrade, you can keep your unlimited talk and text, but you can NOT keep your unlimited DATA.

Typically they do grandfather old plan's. Sprint and Verizon have for me, and if you switch phone's you shouldn't lose your Unlimited 4G data on VZW to anyone who's worried. Once you have it they will likely follow in AT&T's footsteps and grandfather it in. It's not like older CDMA phones, to switch devices all you do is stick you SIM card into the new device.

Heck, I have put my Droid Charge SIM into my Pantech UML290 and had working 4G LTE data without any problems, though they will likely block that from working, but not device switching.

This is what I have been saying.

As long as you keep your contract, they can't change it. Therefore, even if you switch phones, you aren't changing your current contract. You are just extending it. If they decide to change your data plan for you to this new one, then you have grounds to terminate without paying an ETF.

With Sprint thinking about following the lead of data caps too, I really don't see a reason to jump ship to another carrier. I use less than 2gb per month even with tethering. Tmobile is offering 5gb for the same price. If Verizon steps up to the plate and offers the same, I wouldn't break a sweat if I was signing up as a new customer. As it is now, I am grandfathered in, so I don't have to worry about these caps.

Helps if you read the contract you signed. Phone upgrades extend your contract, not replace it. The only way data gets changed from unlimited to the new plan is if you change your data plan or eliminate it and then add it back later.

probably back to cable and other phone providers for the unlimited plans they would otherwise miss for data.. Though personally, I dont have cell phones and think that for data needs, they dont cut it. I use data on my computer, thus I never saw the need for data services on my cell - esp since they dont do a good cross-over to my PC, So even when I had a cell phone, I ususally did not bother with data services for them.

But then , thats me and others with computers tht re not integrated with the cell phone...

they cant change your billing structure in the middle of a contract...

one of the biggest reasons for many people going with the TB despite it being the LTE guinea pig was to grandfather yourself into the current data plans. as this article stated, there've been rumors of caps/tiers/etc for a long time. Sprint charges more for 4G phones even if you 1- dont want 4G speeds and 2- dont have WiMax in your area. We didnt want anything to do with that for 1-2 years

probably not, it will become the same price per phone, or more. They will probably just charge the same, and call it a bucket.
Its just like AT$T. They just want your money, and will find a way to make your bill go up.
I am still on the $30 per month Iphone unlimited data plan, and i use an average of 8GB per month(I stream a lot of pandora, and tether at work). I have never gotten an email from them about tethering because there is no way for AT&T to differentiate between data from the phone and data from a tethered idevice if it is jailbroken. AT$T is know for taking shots in the dark, and they often go by average data usage in a month. If they see a spike, they claim tether. I will keep my unlimited untill the they wont let me anymore, and then I will be moving to sprint, because by then, sprint will have an idevice.

Time to Give Up the Smartphones

It's funny how they're adding all these bells and whistles, and they're all trying to gouge you when you use them.

Considering how ridiculously overpriced data is on phones, I'm strongly considering just cutting mine off and getting out of this circus when my contract runs out.

They think we're dependent on these things. Maybe some people are. But others are really going to rethink this whole charade.

I have a Blackberry Curve now, which isn't good for much more than basic webpage surfing (and can even be poor at that). What's the point in me getting some new fancy Android phone if all it will do is get me overages upon overages? Anyone thinking logically can see what's going on here.

It's no wonder they want to bring the wireless model to the wirelines. And considering the way prices for everything are rising, soon every greedy corporation is in for a rude awakening.

About the only type of cell I would be tempted to buy would be a basic cellphone for emergencies, assuming I had the money for it.. Otherwise, if I break down and need help, i would sooner flag down someone or go visit a farm house and ask permission to use theirs. baring that, if it is close enough i will go walk home if i can find something of use to get my car running again, or walk to nearest gas station. but then, I am also running the car less and a few other precautions to aviod unwarrented and unwanted suprises. I use my internet connection thats on the computer, because it makes more sense. And not only that, but my cell phones and my computers rarely interconnect. Which is especially stupid considering that at least one of them supports USB... So, why bother? Even other tech savy individuals in my family prefer the emergency cell phone plan to most cell phone plans except for my bother. His only phone is one that he feels he needs and gets a little bit of help with.

Switched Already

I already had an issue with paying Verizon over $100 for some of the same perks. Switched to Virgin Mobile last year. Yes they have a cap like everyone else but after the cap they just slow down your speed. Why is it so hard for companies to see that speed isnt everything. I would rather have a 3g unlimited (virgin mobile) over a 4g connection with a 2gb cap because I dont want to keep track of my data and worry about overage fees.

Depends

4 people on a family plan might be better off especially if 2 of them don't sue data and only have it because it's required. Also depends on what the tiers are. Right now on a smartphone you have to get the unlimited plan for $30. If I use data I mostly use wi-fi. So if I can get a cheaper data plan this is better for me.

Re: Depends

Yea but for ppl like me that can't get dsl or cable internet this sucks because this is the only way to get access... Just this month I have Used 4.4 gigs on my Verizon Air Card and 2.4 gigs on my Moto Droid...It freaken takes 2 devices so i don't go over.... the reason i go over is because my Farm uses the internet to monitor Irrigation and Tractor Location and Service Information on the Certain piece of equipment..IMO I wouldn't mind still paying 30 dollars for the unlimited plan and then have Cheaper ones for people that don't rely on data as much..

This doesn't effect you at all since we're talking about PHONE data not internet.

Like we couldn't see this one coming....

Lure in new customers with a Verizon CDMA iPhone, wait 6 months, and introduce pay-by-the-byte billing. It's a great cash cow.

9 year VZW customer will leave VZW over this...

First of all I'm in contract and if they change the terms of my contract I will hold them in breach of contract and sever the relationship. At the end of said contract I will cancel our nationwide family plan with 4 phones plus data and go to one of the several carriers offering unlimited voice and data.

VZW are you listening? Despite my hate of all things involving your parent company I have come to your defenses several times over the past years....no more if this is the kind of crap you plan for our future kiss this business goodbye.

time for regulators to step in?

Bye competition... hello Duopoly...
You PAY $$ REAL MONEY in taxes and fees... might be time for the state & federal regulators to step in and force price changes and terms of service changes, in addition quality of service goals such as in the days of land-line copper regulation too!

I've had VZW for about 10 years.

This sounds like their greed is showing. They grow their network bandwidth into 4G, but now charge more and give less?

That's evil and sinful. In the least, they ought to continue the same level of service for the same price, rather than up the prices on people and give less.

I sense many people will be dropping VZW in the near future.

What!?!?!!

We just got 2 D2G's in December (w/2yr Contract) and they're going to toast our data plans?

Like I need to pay more. I already pay around $165/mo. If they switch me to a different data plan I'm going with a dumb-phone (or heavily modify my D2G) and switching to a Straight Talk plan.

They don't give a date for the change...

Before they do change their plans, if you get an unlimited plan now or currently have one, wouldn't you be grandfathered in?

(yes I know they were discussing this earlier, but I think they were referring to AT&T)...

Am eligible for phone upgrade and had my eye on a 'Droid phone...

unfortunately

Sadly, i'm sure sprint will at the advice of probably the same that advise att and verizon, jump on the super low cap band wagon as well in the future. Granted, imo, they'd do much better if they didn't, but the grass is always greener on the other side ya know!....

Good

They are being smart and proactive in network management like AT&T is now. Hopefully both carriers will finally kill off unlimited data in the coming years.

What?? Are trying to be funny? Why sell smart phones at all? Why sell these phones that they advertise that can watch movies on or watch tv or browse internet or whatever, and I can see how a person can easily reach the phony "cap" every month. Why advertise "unlimited" with selling an ever increasing smart phones that get smarter every few months then they penalize you for utilizing the freakin thing.

Re: Good

There is a limited amount of spectrum, and normal users who don't sit there and do YouTube all month or run bittorrent on their phones won't have an issue with the cap, and, under AT&T's current system, save $60 per year.

What if...

...when my contract is about to expire, I upgrade my 3G Android Incredible to a 4G phone. Anyone know if going from 3G to 4G means a new contract and bye-bye to unlimited data?

Thanks in advance.
