Pew: 24% Of Internet Users Have Made Internet Phone Calls Sharp Increase From Early 2007 Tuesday May 31 2011 09:23 EDT Tipped by FFH5 According to the latest data from the Pew Internet and American Life Project, just 24% of all Internet users -- or 19% of all U.S. adults -- have actually used the Internet to complete a voice call. On any given day 5% of internet users are going online to place phone calls, says Pew. That's some significant growth since the last time Pew asked these questions in early 2007, and found that 8% of internet users (6% of all adults) had placed calls online and 2% of internet users were making calls on any given day. The group also found a notable spike in video calling, finding that 7% of cell phone owners had participated in video calls or online chats with their handheld device. Pew notes that most VoIP users unsurprisingly tend to be younger, and most live in urban and suburban areas. |

underwhelminga sample size of 846 people gets you this stunning statistic and a pretty graph...
since they only mention Skype and Vonage by name I wonder how many "adults" who use a Skype alternative like MSN or Yahoo messenger, or another VoIP provider (perhaps their office) didn't think to answer "yes" to this survey.

Re: underwhelmingBut even if some other VOIP users weren't in the server, it still strengthens the fact that VOIP is growing rapidly.

Medical office I service uses VoIP in the entire office. With only alarm, two elevators & three fax machines having dedicated lines of their own using good old fashion POTS. There's easily over 80 employees their using the VoIP on a daily basis.
So I think those numbers aren't probably too accurate.

"Just" 24%?Seems high to me. And does this include seamless, hidden VOIP solutions like MagicJack? There's a lot of grey area.

Re: "Just" 24%?Seams very low. AT&T has petitioned the FCC to turn off POTS sometime in the future. That process may be like there were 3 places in the US that still had Operators complete all calls in their exchanges in the late 1970's. or the conversion or the analog to digital TV conversion.
