AT&T Hints At Mobile Data Family Plans
Like Verizon, Will Unveil 'Bucket 'O Bytes' Plans Soon
by Karl Bode Thursday 02-Jun-2011 tags: prices · business · wireless · bandwidth · consumers · wireless
Verizon has been repeatedly stating that they're be killing off their unlimited mobile data smartphone option sometime this summer, replacing it with pricing tiers based on data consumption, speed, or both. Verizon's also been suggesting that they may embrace the idea of family data plans, a "bucket o' bytes" approach that would give a family a set amount of data to consume each month -- much like pooled family voice minutes. Speaking at the D9 tech conference today, AT&T's Ralph de la Vega hinted that AT&T family data plans are also coming. "...once you have so many devices that you carry, you may want a shared plan," de la Vega stated, adding that "The more focus groups we do, the more we think that may be the way. We're working on it. It will be soon." Readers will find de la Vega's full interview with Wall Street Journal staff concerning mobile data pricing worth a read.

Re: Always a follower

I'm sure it will go something like:
$25 per month for a single device with a 2Gb cap, $15 overage per Gb

$35 per month 2 device "family bucket o' bytes", 2Gb cap, $20 overage per Gb, $10 per month each additional device, with each adding 250Mb to the cap.

I'm sure that it will also be:
All devices in a Family Plan 'must' have data analogy - all or none, and each extra line is $15 for data.

I think it is better to see what the plans ACTUALLY are before complaining about them. They might be a nice discount for families with multiple devices now and with each member paying separately for data.

Right, because if there is one thing AT&T is known for, it's finding new ways to save you money.

Normally I'd agree with you, but these things haven't historically been that great. There's always something that prevents them from being a great value to the customer.

You're pretty optimistic. The cynic in me says it will likely be more like
single device - $25 for 2GB/$15 overage
bucket of bytes - $60 for 4GB/$15 overage with a mandatory requirement that a family plan also must go with the bucket of bytes.

Like they listen to focus groups

Pure BS and this goes for most big corporations. Focus groups give the perception you are actually listening to your customers and then you can go ahead and do what you wanted to do all along.

Now you can use up your quota faster as a family!

Don't worry. Although Little Jimmy used up all the family's data, all daddy needs to do is pay $15 more for 200 MB!

Go go US wireless Broadband!

What's next? Roll Over Data bytes that expire within an year?

Re: Now you can use up your quota faster as a family!

Right now their tiered price point is $10/GB when you go over your initial allotment, assuming you are not on one of their "mini" plans. I would expect that to continue.

This is in line with other carriers in the USA.

Personally, I have 3 iPhones on my family account, and I would expect to save some money on this family data plan.

Re: Now you can use up your quota faster as a family!

Can't you just go to the Sprint and Verizon websites and check it out? Verizon is right there with AT&T at $10/GB tiered plans. Sprint is too, except their overage charges are awful -- 5 cents/MB which is $50/GB. Sprint is currently doing unlimited 4G but their rollout is relatively small, and you can bet they'll be limiting usage once they get going on 4G.

Yes there are grandfathered unlimited plans but they don't matter in the long run.

If the shared bucket of bits family plan doesn't save anyone money, then no one will sign up for it. But I am sure there is some savings to be had once the plan's details are available.

I've still got the $30 unlimited plan. Even watching live MLB games and other video, I've never exceeded 600Mb/month. I'm not prepared to add $25/month for my 14 y/o son to have a data plan with 2Gb cap, in addition to my $30/unlimited. If I could share an allotment with my son, he'd probably have a smartphone and a data plan... I'll wait to see the plans, but I wouldn't anticipate it costing more than individual plans - else everybody would stick with individual plans.

Ha!

It's going to be 2GB shared across multiple lines. I would love see roll over data with T-MO like throttling when over, but we know overages gets at&t more money. I don't trust anything they say as good news.

I disagree. I saved money when I switched from the unlimited plan to the $25/mo plan for 2GB. Sure, I lost my "unlimited" title, but I couldn't use 2GB even if I tried. I actually did try one month. I turned off WiFi, streamed music all the time, watched NetFlix movies and did whatever I could to use data... and at the end of the month I used 1.2 GB.

Jayson

@charter.com

there is no real competion

Both Big red and the death star copy each other... and it is usually not in the consumers favor. Big Red makes a unlimited talk plan for set price.... AT&T does the same thing.. with the same price. AT&T gets rid of unlimited plans... Big Red does the same thing. If they are really competing with each other then why do most of there plan mirror each other????
I currently have a grandfathered unlimited data plan on a LG env Touch. If i want a smart phone i have to change my plane to one the costs most for what i'm already getting? or get a "bucket o' bytes" plan and still pay more... how is benefiting the Consumer??

YAY!

Just what I've been waiting for. be able to pay more per GB.

What will it be $30/GB?

And of course AT&T wouldn't want to spoil our broadband experience. New devices are more data hungry than ever. So minimum 4GB purchase to ensure customer experience satisfaction.

Want to tether? That's double the price per GB, since the bits have to go to the phone and then to a PC, double the work double the price.

Re: YAY!

This is just factually wrong. AT&T's price point is pretty much $10/GB. Tethering is pretty cheap. Personally I have the iPhone hotspot plan which is $45/mo for 4GB, no matter whether it's the iPhone using the data or a tethered or wifi connected device. Above 4GB/mo the tiered pricing is $10/GB.

The cheapest plan right now is $60/GB. And you are saying they would apply the same price point for a SHARED bucket of GB?

Clearly the cheap plan is not designed for overages and the overage charge is punitive, in the sense that you would step up to the next plan which is the real tiered plan at $10/GB when you go above the initial amount.

So the price point is, in fact, $10/GB.

Why should you have to pay for tethering, you pay for data and why should they tell you how to use your data. It's kinda ridiculous to think paying more for tethering the same data you would normally use is a great value.

ATT asking stupid people for advice...

Focus groups with NON techies. That'll go well. It's like justifying your alcoholism by asking other alcoholics what's best for your well being. They should let the people that actually know what a gigabyte is into these focus groups.

Since they are a large % of the users, they should be heard. After all, they are paying customers too.

Gee, sort of like Alcoholics Anonymous. Seems to work for many alcoholics.

And I am sure they do. But the focus groups shouldn't be all techies. A mix of customer types is needed.

Could be Ok

As I've said I only have a data plan through Verizon because it's REQUIRED not because I need it. So "unlimited data" is of no benefit to me. I'm paying $30 extra per month for the right to have a smartphone basically. Now if for $50 I can split the data 4 ways under a family plan I'm only paying $12.50. So I'm saving $210 a year. The amount of data doesn't matter since I don't use much data to begin with.

Depends on the pricing

This could be great, depending on the price and amount of data, but also on what the baseline fees are on each device. I kind of don't like the concept of having to share my data though...

at&t Math..

So..

200MB Plan = $15/200MB.. Which is about $75/GB.
2GB Plan = $12.50/GB + $10/GB Afterwards
4GB Plan = $11.25/GB + $10/GB Afterwards

What idiot would get the 200MB plan with a smartphone?
