Charter Bumps Modem Rental Fee
$2 Hike From $5 to $7
Users in our Charter Communications forum note that the cable company is sending out letters to subscribers, informing them that they're bumping the cost of renting a cable modem from $5 to $7. It's a good reminder to buy your own modem, unless you're interested in spending hundreds of dollars or more over the years on a device worth about $50. Of course it's a good idea to save your receipt, since we've seen more than one subscriber over the years charged modem rental fees even after buying their own modem.

Optimum Online

Thankfully Optimum Online never went that route. Before loaning modems for free, you had to buy your modem at The Wiz. For some crazy reason I continue to own my modem. Cablevision did replace my original SB4100 with an SB5120 a few years ago so that I could get their then new 15/2 tier speed, but I still own it. For any modem trade, I have to keep all the paperwork to show the serial number trail starting from the original purchase.

You still pay sales tax though. NJ is making the cable companies collect tax, even on "free" equipment. It just goes to show that nothing is free and they are building in the cost of the rental anyway.

Re: Optimum Online

most states do collect sales tax on that. Ohio collects an equipment charge on post paid cell phones. It was a line item charge but now its combined in with all the other BS taxes Ohio charges for phones.

Cripes... Glad I bought my own modem 6-7 years ago (atleast).... Still runs fine on my 20mb service, although if I wanted to go to the 30 or 50 my isp offers I'd have to upgrade.

Re: Optimum Online

LOLz. I went to my local Goodwill yesterday, they had three SB5120's on the shelf for $5 apiece. Gee, rent a modem for $7 a month or BUY for $5....hmmm. Tough choice.

They do accept returns as well, so there's no risk in purchasing one and getting a DOA.

What about cable VoIp customers.

How much will it cost customers to obtain a Charter VoIp certified modem. DOCSIS 3.0 is no problem. In my case I have Comcast service and they only allow their modems to be used by Digital Voice customers.

Make certain that you keep your receipt for both the return of the ISP's modem and for the purchase of the new modem in a safe place. When I subscribed to Adelphia Broadband and replaced their modem they waited a year to begin again charging me for a rental modem even though I owned the modem. Adelphia required a copy of both receipts to prove I owned the modem.

receipt

Definitely keep the receipt for modem purchase. Comcast has attempted three times over the past 7 years to claim my modem as theirs, even going so far as putting negative remarks on my credit report for "non-payment" of their rental fee (I refused to pay it since it is MY modem, not theirs).

Going to Microcenter today

Sounds like I'm off to microcenter today to pick up my own modem. I never liked those fees, and in the end, this is just the BUMP I needed to pay them less each month!

Charter and modems

I once had Charter cable, Before I had to move in 2004, I owned My own modem and yet when I went to tell them that I was moving, they asked for the modem and said that their info said that I was renting It, Good thing I kept My receipts as I had proof that I owned My cable modem as I never paid a rental fee.

TWC & Adelphia...

I am glad that TWC and Adelphia dropped their $3.00 fees. I used to pay $59.95 per month.

ripoff

this should only apply to newer docsis 3 modems, if at all. the docsis 2 modems have been paid off by the cable companies years ago, and in another few years they'll be nearly worthless once the transistion to docsis 3. finishes and all the docsis 2 bandwidth is redistributed for docsis 3.

I just got the letter... I am furious

It is really sticking the knife in and turning it. I can't believe how blatantly greedy they can be. I've been paying the rental fee for years and years and years. The device is so paid for already by a factor 10x to 20x. What aholes! The rental fee should be applied to purchase price after x amount of years. That would be the FAIR thing to do. I'm sure they could care less about FAIR.

And the service here is abysmal. I get dropped lines constantly. I just got one which is what sent me to dslreports just now in the first place.

It is clearly a push to buy one of their new package deals. The letter had a definite marketing flair to it. They want us all on timed contracts.

I hope to be moving within the next year. I should jump ship to Fios now just to send a message. Although I wouldn't want to risk any termination fees there either. At least my new target home will not be charter.

I badly want to stick it back!!!!!!!!!

How about ..
