Time Warner Cable Acquiring New Wave Assets
Customers in Kentucky and Western Tennessee
User motorola870 writes in to let us know that Time Warner Cable today announced that the nation's second-largest cable company will be acquiring some systems from New Wave Communications (see our user reviews). Specifically, Time Warner Cable plans to acquire 70,000 basic video subscribers, 42,000 Internet subscribers and 26,000 phone subscribers from New Wave in Kentucky and western Tennessee for $260 million in cash. Time Warner Cable continues to be on the lookout for smaller acquisition targets. Time Warner Cable is reviewing a possible acquisition of Insight Communications, whose owners The Carlyle Group, have put the company on the auction block and are hoping to get somewhere between $3.5 and $4 billion. Another possible acquisition target is Charter's Los Angeles properties.

Hey

I have insight in Columbus, and it would actualy make sence since TWC encircles Insight's territory, so connecting/merging the network would be a lil easier. Plus Insight allready resells RR here so there is allready a connection at the office to TWC/RR.

I would be ok with that because in talking with Insight.. They don't have any current plans to bring DOCSIS 3.x to columbus... Even though their "KY/IN" Markets have faster speeds than 15MB down...

They don't see the need to offer anything better in Columbus.. I would love Insight to go away..

WOW!!!

Lucky Subscribers....

Live in New Waves IL footprint and still waiting on DOCSIS 3.0 roll out. I can see TW expediting those areas to 3.0 as New Wave was test marketing DOCSIS 3.0 in KY.

As for the Phone subscribers, I am sure Big River Telephone will get a hefty chunk from New Wave for this sell off, Big River Telephone was a third party that New Wave contracted for their VOIP service.

In the end, as a current subscriber, I doubt I could be so lucky as those in KY and W. TN.....

Get us the Docsis 3.0 wideband first

Instead of buying other corporations. TW needs to spend that money to upgrade their network to the new Docsis 3.0 wideband.
Most of Los Angeles TW customers, has no Docsis 3.0 wideband.

So why did they write and have passed an anti-municipal fiber build law in North Carolina? I didn't realize a simple business was allowed to control a state's legislature.

No "business" gets as many political benefits, tax benefits, rights of way, "broadband grants", and engages in as much anti-competitive behavior as TW, except maybe AT&T.

Why should government be allowed to get involved in providing a commercial service? Talk about unfair competition...

Most of Los Angeles TW customers, has no Docsis 3.0 wideband.

The amount of customers TWC is picking up in this deal is small... the amount served by one large hub in SoCal.

TWC has probably 50-75 hubs in SoCal.

TWC as an entire company does NOT dictate the upgrades. those are done by each division. They're basically on their own with little to no corp. oversight. They've always operated that way and will always do so. TWC always brings up about integrating the entire company into TWC East and TWC West which NEVER has happened yet and was suppose to be done after they split from Time Warner, Inc.

If you want DOC 3.0 take it up with the President of the LA market/division not with TWC Corp.

Great more consolidation :(

Great more consolidation Is just what Americans need. There is a reason why Al Jazeraa English and RT America are only carried by local cable companies because the giants like Comcast and TW are non-neutral with agendas.

Most of these systems run at an upgraded capacity of 750MHz

According to the FCC cable search database most of these systems owned by New Wave communications are at 750MHz which should allow for TWC to bring in more services via SDV. TWC already has SDV in most of its Kentucky systems that run on motorola cable boxes.

Re: Most of these systems run at an upgraded capacity of 750MHz

type in the community of your choice and when it comes up click on it then find an annual report and click on it and click on to proceed to section III and when on this page if the system is 750MHz it will say downsteam bandwidth available is 54MHz to 750MHz. Note some systems have been upgraded since the last update of annual reports in 2007 and not all systems have one. I know the TWC system that I am on is listed as 750MHz which was true until 2008 when it was rebuilt to 860MHz.

W Tenn is mostly Charter territory

Surprised TW decided to get back in here. TW was our cbale company for about 2 years until they sold out to Charter. This was about 12 years ago.

When we first moved here in '85 TWC was the cable company. TWC then sold it to another company cant remember name. That company ran it for couple years or so. Then they sold it to another company which ran it for a little while.

Which they sold it to adelphia cable which ran it till company ended. That's when TWC took our area back over.

Here in North Texas there were serveral previous cable providers in the TWC North Texas cluster such as TCI and Paragon Cable which became Time Warner Cable shortly before AT&T aqquired Time Warner Cable and merged their systems with the former TCI systems purchased by AT&T in '99 and then Comcast bought out AT&T in 2003 and then in 2006 the North Texas Systems were sold to Time Warner Cable in exchange for some of TWC's properties in areas where Comcast had already been established. The main thing TWC did when they took over was add a butt load of channels and rebuilt the aging 550MHz A/B line system that was in Dallas to 860MHz and brought the rest of the 750MHz single line areas up to 860MHz as well.

We got boomerang and CNN international and other goodies almost right after TWC took over in 2006.

So I think these systems when aqquired will get a channel boost but the only thing that I see that will be likely dropped is NFL Network and NFL Red Zone.

Frontier had cable services in Ohio. Before them it was Cox in many areas.

Marion, Ohio had: Cox, Frontier, Adelphia, and then TWC. and now is up on the block to be sold/spun off to Windjammer. -- another TWC arm in the cable business. TWC and Comcast spun a good amount of systems off to Windjammer that they picked up from the Adelphia/Comcast/TWC deal that they didn't want.

How about ..
