Comcast Targets FiOS Frontier Customers
Comcast Ads Accuse ISP of 'Pulling the Plug'
by Karl Bode 05:47PM Tuesday Jun 21 2011
Frontier Communications has been rather ungracefully trying to offload or otherwise scare away the 100,000 FiOS TV customers it acquired in its deal with Verizon, first with a huge 50% price hike and botched DirecTV offer, and then with a massive $500 installation fee to frighten off new customers. While insisting they aren't leaving the TV business, Frontier has been backing out of video franchise agreements with towns and cities, and migrating all of these customers to DirecTV as quickly as possible. Comcast's now taking aim at these Frontier FiOS customers, running ads arguing that Frontier's "pulling the plug" on FiOS. That has apparently annoyed Frontier:

Billboards sprinkled across Ft. Wayne, Ind., tell residents, "Frontier is pulling the plug on FiOS — Switch to Xfinity," has infuriated Frontier Communications, who says it will continue to provide FiOS service in the area, at least for broadband, indefinitely. Now the independent phone company has sent a "cease and desist" letter to Comcast officials demanding the billboards come down. Frontier spokesman Matt Kelley accused Comcast of spreading false rumors in an effort to drum up business.
Technically it's FiOS TV, not FiOS, that Frontier's planning to pull the plug on -- even if Frontier has absolutely no intention of ever offering FTTH to a single additional home anywhere in their footprint. Comcast is sticking to their guns:
quote:
"Comcast continues to invest in these markets, while Frontier has taken a number of steps to discourage new customers from signing up for its service and encourage current customers to seek alternative services from satellite. We are using these ads to make consumers aware of our Xfinity TV service as a better choice for consumers."
Oregon regulators went so far as to help Comcast sign up users, informing locals that since Frontier clearly didn't want the TV customers they had, users should sign up with Comcast to avoid egregious fees intended to drive them to satellite TV.

Cutting edge infrastructure held by a low rent company...

Results in low rent service. Who would have thunk it? It's not like TV agreements, maintenance, upgrades, and customer support aren't all free. Is it? Frontier sucks, yes. However this shows exactly why companies like Verizon need to be stopped in their chess game with consumers being the pawns. These selloffs should never have happened. As to Comcast's wording, I see nothing wrong. Frontier will never expand FIOS, is cutting all services outside internet, and is discouraging new adoption with pricing. Seems to me Frontier FIOS is on life support out of the gate and is already getting some amputations of some limbs of the service.

Frontier is pricing their TV service to kill it and everyone knows it. Comcast's lawyers are bigger than Frontier's lawyers, which is why they are ignoring Frontier's deadlines. And as we posted on Stop the Cap!, one ad expert says if Frontier doesn't counteroffer, Comcast will bleed them of customers fast.

Frontier, Windstream, FairPoint, and to a lesser extent CenturyLink shows rural America will be stuck in a low speed DSL ghetto as AT&T and Verizon throw their rural customers overboard. At least CenturyLink is spending some capital on a U-verse like solution for some of their territories. Good luck seeing that from Frontier.

They did counter. They offered to give you a free HD TV, a free laptop, or free DTV during 2011. They spent $9.8m in the first quarter alone on "aspirational gifts". And subscribers are still fleeing in droves. A friend that works for a utility locating company says that this spring they got batches of several thousand locate requests at a time from Comcast for cable buries.

WS is doing FTTH in greenfield builds, with 24/3 (or is it 24/1.5) where the FTTH service is available.

Then again, it isn't available everywhere.

But hey, 12M DSL with ~600k up all the way down to the 3M tier is better than Frontier's lame excuse for internet...

Frontier is the worst company ever.

You know you're a shit company when you can manage to make Comcap look good.

It is amazing how badly Frontier has managed to botch its acquisition of its FiOS areas. Such a backwards company doesn't deserve such advanced infrastructure.

Could not have posted a better comment.
As for Frontier deserving an advanced infrastructure, just wait, they will f--k that up in due time. Trust me. They are a true shit company.

Lower price then Comcast!

Comcast raised prices again. I still don't have Fox Soccer HD, GOL TV HD, CBC HD (Not really Comcast fault, but I blame them due to the price hike hehe.) Fox Soccer Plus in either SD or HD. Are they still encrypting channels like USA and TNT for QAM digital tuners?

Are there any major cable companies that still have channels like TNT or USA unencrypted?

I call BS

If a large company such as Verizon can make FTTP profitable, so can a little company such as Frontier. What we all know from history is if you pile on debt to a company in a spin-off it was doomed to fail from the get-go regardless if they were making tablets or selling gasoline at $20 a gallon in an oil crisis. A company with a FAIR amount of debt related to starting up a company from scratch would never have equaled or surpassed the debt that Verizon offloaded to Frontier and Fairpoint. For Comcast to exploit this for the couple of million potential customers is a weak strategy when they should be focusing upon competitive geograhies.

That said... let's see Frontier match or surpass 50/8 megabits for $65 as Cablevision now offers.

and they would match Cablevision because................

Cablevision is a little crappy cable company in the NY area. No reason for Frontier to match anything with them.

Comcast and Cablevision occupy the same breathing space... point of interest: New Jersey (think parts closest to Philidelpha, PA) So, the idea is you increase speeds in one place, you will be stuck prejudicing one region over another (historical MO of Comcast) thererore 50/8 can make it to Comcast, then Comcast overlaps frontier... competition (in an ideal world) gets contagious from losing enough customers.

Re: I call BS

Comcast already has 50/5 and 100/10 plans in frontier fios markets. Had them for over a year now.
