FiOST TV 1.9 IMG Deployment to Continue Next Week?
Availability 'In the Coming Months' May Finally be True
by Karl Bode 02:19PM Wednesday Jun 22 2011
With the pressure initially on Verizon to erode cable market share, the company has been packing their TV service with features that Comcast's only just now playing catch up with. Just yesterday we noted how Verizon FiOS TV users were very impressed by an early sneak peak and Verizon's latest set top software update. However, after Verizon heavily hyped the update, bugs resulted in a deployment freeze, with Verizon for a year saying updates would resume "in the coming months." Users in our forums had noted that deployment of the IMG 1.9 update was slated to continue next week, something that Mari Silbey over at Zatz Not Funny has confirmed:

I noted a comment in the DSLReports forums yesterday suggesting the rollout would resume and decided to do a little of my own digging. Sure enough, a very reliable source tells me Verizon will start the guide updates again next week, and the new software should be deployed nationally within a few months.
The update not only makes the FiOS TV GUI look better, but it also offers a number of functionality improvements to customer DVRs -- including eSATA support and multiroom DVR browsing -- many that were proposed by customers via the Verizon Verizon Idea Exchange.

You can find a full list of 1.9 improvements here.

Expand service please

It's nice that they are taking care of their current customers, how ever so slowly.

But I would like to see them expand their coverage area into other markets. Western MA would love to see FiOS

I'm in Springfield, MA (Indian Orchard). We're the 3rd largest city in the state. How can we not be profitable?!

AGREED.

Everyone I know in the Reading, PA suburbs wants Fios. It's advertised HEAVILY on TV and no one can get it.

Verizon please wire up zip code 19606! I know many (including myself) who would sign up!

Why does it seem like FiOS is the only broadband/TV service I consistently see people lusting over? You don't see these kind of comments drooling over the prospect of getting "Comcast Xfinity!" rolled out in their town.

This is what happens when a corporation stops trying to milk copper and embraces the future. The consumer embraces them back.

It's also the prices that matter.

Comcast economy 1mb down / 350kb up = 30.00

Verizon Fios 20mb down / 5mb up = 30.00

Love my FiOS!!

Granted I don't really watch TV, and just love the 35/35 speeds, but I can't wait to see the DVR/STB's overhaul and see how it all works out, go Verizon, can't wait to play around with this!!!

Re: Love my FiOS!!

I envy you :P

Seriously, my U-Verse is continually degrading and they're now saying I never should have had service in the first place and that I need an iNID.

If AT&T did things properly from the start, I doubt we'd have this issue.

*sobs* Why is AT&T such a big company in this state!? I wants FiOS.

Re: Love my FiOS!!

/Sigh it always bugs me a lot to hear these things from my previous customers that I tried my hardest to help, have you been emailing U-versecare? Or just calling in? Who is telling you this? Is it the field technicians/I&M technicians or is it the Tier 2?

Re: Love my FiOS!!

Yeah, Andy has been helping me out. The line tech that came out that day was saying that I never should have had service installed back then (no iNIDs) and that I should have been upgraded months ago. The order for the iNID seems to be going through, but I don't know at this point. I can't believe how difficult it is to get existing customers upgraded vs getting new people installed... gotta love it.

All this has made me ponder the previously unthinkable, switching to Comcast. Their new STBs are very promising and I'm kinda liking it (and it's better HD quality which, according to the rumors, AT&T is pondering reducing again for people to get more streams).

Maybe I'll move a few miles north to MA and find FiOS there :P

Re: Love my FiOS!!

If you're an avid TV watcher, I would suggest FiOS so if you decide to move up there just to get it, I fully support that, I was actually amazed at how good the quality was, and how I couldn't tell much difference between it and 1080p Bluray looks, however I AM disappointed in quality of high motion screens and bright flashes, the TV goes nuts and loses all quality, but I can't tell if that's the TV (using HDMI) or the service, so I honestly can't blame Verizon for it, I don't watch much TV so it really doesn't affect me.

Honestly I'd almost suggest Comcast over AT&T just because of how much I dislike AT&T... I can't believe all these companies are going the way of killing unlimited data... They are just trying to turn anything over XGB of data a month into like a long distance charge for the phone, or minutes on a cell phone, and they just can't seem to realize that the internet is NOT a phone like service... It's really sad in my honest opinion.

Re: Love my FiOS!!

Caps just push us backwards. We're already overpaying for usually undelivered services (unless you have FiOS it seems) that have no guarantees of making it work as advertised. So, if we're already pretty much screwed, why should we accept caps and get screwed even more?

What happens when companies move up towards 1Gbps? What happens to the caps then? Comcast still caps their 100Mbps services with the same 250GB limit as the rest of the plans. What happens past that point?

Re: Love my FiOS!!

Yeah I agree with you there, I'm all for caps if the end result of going over the cap is throttling back to half of the available bandwidth to ease congestion, but if you do it and then put overages on top of that (which actually, I think there should be an option system, so you can either choose that your plan comes with overages and no throttling, or you can choose that your plan has NO overages, is completely unlimited, and has throttling when you reach the cap, same for wireless, let the people decide what they want)

Well supposedly these companies said than they will raise the caps according to the usage demands of the time, which doesn't make sense to me, if you're going to adjust it, why cap it in the first place? Unless you're adjusting to lower caps so you can get even more money back just because you can...

Re: Love my FiOS!!

Yeah, the only thing I'm worried about is that Verizon is about to start spouting the same crap as the other carriers, even though they have already said they have had no need to kick anyone off, they will eventually kick that just like they did unlimited data on their cell phones...

In my dreams

I just wish they would do more MDU's. Where I live in NJ here. We had FIOS installed early on. the whole town was done except for MDU's. The fiber comes down down down the street. Then hangs a right down the cross street. Comes up the next and ends just at the development. If they at least run the fiber through there would be hope of getting it eventually. Oh well. Would luv to kick CV and their poor excuse for an img and get FIOS.

Re: In my dreams

I have heard they have had problems with MDU's. My friend in Chattanooga said he could not get EPB into a multi-story building he runs.

Just curious but what about fiber makes it difficult to get in these buildings??

I'd like to see something like this in MythTV.

I'm talking about the electronic program guide that shows you the information next to the channel number and below the selected program.

I also like the theme of the guide.

Well, at least I could create my own theme for MythTV (not a distro, but a backend/frontend program for watching/recording TV shows), but then it's quite tricky to create my own custom theme.

But then Verizon will respond with "Oh no I don't want to see MythTV look like the program guide in FiOS."

Going the MCE route here. Have to get a ceton card and cable card. Then I can dump the img from CV and have a semblance of a modern DVR.

Re: I'd like to see something like this in MythTV.

If you go with SageTV (for Windows; OEM Edition for Linux) or MythTV (officially supported in Linux), you can have just one backend and multiple frontends, you could watch Live TV in one room and someone can watch Live TV (same or different channel) in another room, provided that your tuner card supports a minimum of two tuners or more).

still tethered..

how about use of youtube, facebook & other widgets without **REQUIRED** tethering to a PC, or even a smart phone/android media manager app (especially if you already buy internet access) ?
