Fox Erects Internet Video Paywall
Non-Cable Customers to See 8 Day Delay
Fox has decided to delay the availability of shows online eight days after they air -- unless a customer can prove that they have a cable TV subscription. According to the company, starting August 15 users will have to log into an authentication system designed to prove they're a cable customer if they try to access programs like "House" using Hulu, Fox.com, or other Internet streaming services. Following the new ISP-specific service model (like HBO Go) only users whose ISP have struck a deal with Fox will be able to accomplish this. So far, the list of Fox partner ISPs sits at one: Dish Network. "We're concerned that cord-cutting is going to be a problem," Mike Hopkins, Fox's president of affiliate sales tells the Wall Street Journal. "The more you enable it by putting content out there for free without any tether to a pay-TV subscription, the bigger that danger becomes." Hopkins acknowledges the move may make consumers "unhappy," but tries to tell the Journal that "if this works," users will somehow see more content online.

So Let Me Get This Straight...

Even though I can hook up an antenna, and watch Fox without having a subscription to cable or satellite, if I want to view the same content over the internet, I have to have a subscription to cable or satellite. Excuse me? I'm missing how this even makes sense. I could understand if this were a channel that isn't available OTA. How exactly does this deal benefit Fox? Right now, I can only see how this benefits cable and satellite companies and is aimed at pissing off people who don't want to pay for DVR service from those companies because they know they can just go online later and watch it at their convenience.
