'Tis The Season for Another Comcast Rate Hike
Comcast Rings in New Year With Significant Increases

Right on the heels of a suite of new price hikes by Time Warner Cable, Comcast is also ringing in the holiday season with price increases that will impact both the company's broadband and television subscribers. This pricing change sheet being sent to customers in New Jersey notes that users can expect across the board hikes on other services and packages as well.

The notice informs Performance customers who bundle TV service that their monthly rate will increase from $45.95 to $48.95. Performance customers who don't bundle TV service will see their monthly cost raised from $59.95 to $62.95. Comcast's Digital Preferred TV package (which has no premium channels) is seeing a hike from $81.95 to $85.95, their HD Preferred XF Triple Play package is going from $154.99 to $159.99, and monthly DVR rental is going from $15.95 to $16.95.

The exact price hikes will vary depending on the market, and how much local competition Comcast sees. In some markets, like Oregon, this is the second rate hike Comcast users are seeing in less than twelve months. In several Oregon markets Comcast has the luxury of "competing" with Frontier Communications, a company that's literally trying to drive customers away with rate hikes after acquiring FiOS TV customers from Verizon they say they can't afford to properly serve.

Comcast and Time Warner Cable will soon be joined in the bi-annual rate hike festivities by most of the other cable giants, whose executives recently have been paying empty lip service toward low-income subscribers struggling under a flagging economy and dysfunctional housing market. Investors have warned cable executives that they can't keep imposing constant rate hikes on subscribers in the face of Internet video and increased telcoTV competition, but it's fairly clear they're not listening.

Despite now consistently losing a significant number of basic cable customers to satellite, telcoTV competitors and Internet video each quarter, cable executives are intent on their stubborn refusal to seriously compete on price -- in part because they're winning the battle for broadband subscribers courtesy of lagging telco network upgrades. The cable exec plan so far appears to be to milk TV subscribers for all they're worth, offer TV Everywhere product and impose caps on broadband service to prevent serious migration to Internet video, then start imposing steep overages only once they begin to sersiously see TV revenues decline.

Re: Pfft

Hell no but you know what? I didn't get a rate hike and I am paying $28 a month for my service. If I was getting 12mbps instead of 6mbps the cost will still be cheaper than what Comcast is providing.

I was very close to getting a business class line from comcast but backed out. Glad I did, and this just makes me feel better that I did.

Am I being childish about it? Yes. Do I get to rub it in your face though? Yes...

give it time Jim. I'm in Clinton Township and my CC phone/internet went up almost 10 bucks (no promotion). Had'em for 2 years. So, I'm already porting my number over to my 2nd magic jack (had one for 3 years now for fax/2nd line). Going with a plus so I don't need to plug it into a computer. After that's ported, then I'm switching to WOW's 50mbps service. It's 30 bucks less then I'm paying now but 3x the speed without speed boost. I use Dish for my tv. I'm dumping internet because once I drop the phone service, my bill will go up another 10 bucks. What I paid 70 for 2 years ago is now over 110.00 when all the promo's died out. Other then price going up and them sending a tech who didn't know basic landline phone troubleshooting, who then later cut my dogs electric fence when they set another cable, who wouldn't know a punchdown block (the problem) if it bit him on the azz, I have no issues with CC.

Fortunately for you there is WOW for you here in the thumb we can't get nothing but comcrap or AT&T and in my opinion AT&T is no different than Comcrap except they will at least use lube when you screwing you over. Comcrap just drives it hard and dry screaming take that you pitiful fool! Our Corporate Government needs to take hold of things and force businesses to offer us greater choices or if big business is going to keep raises their rates then they need to invest into creating a better infrastructure. When you look at the European countries and the Far East their internet performance blows us away especially Japan and China but their topography is so much different than ours. But we the people need to quit bending over and taking and fight back against this corporate greed. BTW thanks Bank of America you can take my house, my left nut, my first born, but I refuse to give you my heart!

I use over 1, sometimes 1.5TB of data a month on my current provider (Fios) so for me no it wouldn't be better, nor would it be a "small fee", I think when I calculated my usage last with AT&T's billing per byte plan I was averaging paying $210 a month for U-verse internet alone. No thanks, I'd rather go through the same process Logan/Wolverine went through to get adamantium installed in his bones...

However in AT&T's defense I will say I endorse their metered billing over anyone else's since it comes out to 20 cents per GB.

I don't think my Fios will remain unlimited, and in fact I'm dreading the day that I do have to cancel them because of the fact that they put limits on my account, but I already know what's in the works, and I'm not stupid, I'm just going to have to wait and see what they'll offer me for a business unlimited plan once they start capping residential, if it's outside of my budget, and no competitor will offer me unlimited service, then I'll just cancel all internet subscriptions.

I'm not going to be forced into being told how to use the internet when I know that the propaganda that they are using is an absolute lie, and I'm not going to sit back and be told that "250GB is all you need" I could get away with 500GB, but 250 is absolutely ridiculous, in fact AT&T is lying saying they need to provide caps for U-verse because the FTTN cabinets can hold 48 ports per card, 4 cards per cabinet, which = 192 customers per cabinet, If every customer on the VRAD can get 32Mbps download that's 6Gbps of bandwidth being used, if you include the upload you're using 7Gbps out of the total 10Gbps they run to the cabinet...

So you're telling me that we use too much bandwidth when your cabinets are already over provisioned?! No I'm sorry, I don't buy that, and I refuse to believe or accept it, that's just BS, and I know it when I see it...

Been going to school for 18 months full time trying to get "retrained" with a degree toboot. I'll keep my Sprint phones, my dish network and WOW internet and Magicjack phone service. They don't offer UVerse in my area, L/L is way too overpriced and cell phones? I still have my 6 sprint employee phone accounts. I'll just spread the wealth.

The only positions available where full-time which I could not do as a student starting in Jan of this coming year. I tried every possible way to make the deal work but in the end just some exceptions could not be made and because they are signing up people to U-Verse faster than they can handle plus overtime this will cause chaos with my school schedule even after the option of shifting classes around.

I also did not want to bite more than I can chew so I told AT&T thanks but I just couldn't do it.

No, there will not be caps imo because we have the capacity because we're building the pipes right. With the advent of advanced caching, we're only limited by the end point hardware. 100 gig long haul legs near ready to go and even testing MUCH higher speeds.

AT&T...wow that's funny! Comcast hiked my high speed internet from $30 a month to $58, than refused to lower it. I looked at AT&T U Verse (6mbps for $19.95 for 1 year), but those fricken theives required me to purchase thier router at $199. I already have a good one....but no budge on their part. I decided to go with a company called Sonic.net, which gives me ADSL @ 7mbps plus a landline with unlimited local & long distance for $39.95 a month forever! They also have promise to move me to 1 gbps fiber once they roll it in my area for the same price! F U Comcast and AT&T

Don't Have A Subscription TV Service

We don't have subscription TV, either cable or satellite, at home, and have no plans ever to do so. My wife and I simply don't see what they charge for it as being a sensible expense.

We somehow manage to "survive" on OTA TV, Netflix and Hulu Plus streaming, and local video store DVD/BD rentals. (Which reminds me: Gotta cancel HP. It's largely useless, in our opinion.)

We do have Comcast Business High-Speed Internet. So far that's not been affected by the price hikes. But were it to go up, I'd have to seriously consider switching to off-site hosting and the least expensive Comcast residential broadband available.

Might be time to move on!

With CenturyLink aggressively offering prism Comcast would be stupid to raise prices. The only disadvantage with prism is that I cannot receive more than two HD Streams and two SD Streams. It might be time to take a trip into space via DBS. I might downgrade to limited basic and use Comcast broadband just to piss them off. By by about $150.00 in revenue for Comcast per month. Or use CenturyLink leaving Comcast standing around with their hands in their pockets. If enough customers go somewhere else Comcast might get the message.

Blame the telecoms who provide zero competition

Telecoms promised from deregulation to provide competitive services that would keep service prices in check.

Do you see AT&T's Uverse in every household where AT&T is served?
Do you see Verizon's FiOS in every househeld in its territory?

No.

Cable companies have free reign in price control.

So much for competition.

Verizon cherry Picking

In 12 blocks around my building there is only two residential buildings wired with FIOS here in Manhattan NY. This is according the Verizon property developers website . This has been the same case since almost 2 years ago. Of course the folks that own my building gave Verizon permission to wire it one year ago. I am paying 150 dollars for the regular triple play without any premium channel and I received the later that another price hike is coming in January. These people were giving a franchise agreement 3 years ago and from looking at the map they haven't made a lot of progress.

Inflation is substantially higher than the government pretends.

Companies like Comcast face higher health insurance, workman's comp, energy and content costs, all of which outpace even inflated inflation. In addition, as Karl seems to celebrate daily, there is the issue of cord-cutting and "neutrality", both of which will only drive remaining subscriber's basic rates higher.

Just say NO to Comcast price hikes!

Most of us can live with fewer crappy TV channels or even slower internet. Once Comcast announces a price hike here either Comcast gives me a less expensive promotional deal for a year or I am definitely cutting back service. Considering the state of the economy I expect a lot more Comcast subscribers than they think will do the same.

Considering the state of the economy I expect a lot more Comcast subscribers than they think will do the same.

Can Comcast really justify higher Video/Cable-tv prices this year? I don't think so.. consumers have just too many alternatives than Cable-tv's last century business model. IMO, internet access is getting to fast to ignore the possiblity of consumers using that pipe(line) too access video beyond OTA free broadcast tv-- for those who can get it.. or stream channels online on an as needed basis.

Merry Christmas!

Have a rate hike! And we know you'll stay, because we're the only game in town!

Not really.. prepaid cell phone, satellite tv.. and someone else's wifi (chuckles...) You can always go cheap/ghetto, you just have to work up the nerve.. and for some people that's the only way to afford it..

Merry Scrooge for canceling Comcast's services!

Re: Merry Christmas!

Where I live, Comcast is the only practical option for HSI. AT&T can only provision us at 1500k, as we are at 11kft, so for all practical purposes, Comcast is the only option.
