Netflix to Launch New Original Series
As Company Focuses On Combating Licensing Hikes

As Netflix becomes more and more powerful, they're facing greater and greater challenges from the companies whose legacy business models they threaten. The cable and ISP industry is busy protecting TV revenues by imposing new caps and overages, even as the cost of delivering landline bandwidth continues to decline. The broadcast industry has been busy jacking up licensing fees in new negotiations with Netflix. As such, Netflix is focusing on new original content, snapping up the rights to a new show by David Fincher and Kevin Spacey, as well as the rights to the cancelled-but-popular Fox show Arrested Development.

The company today also announced they're launching a new series about a mobster (played by Sopranos actor and Bruce Springsteen pal Steven Van Zandt) under witness protection in Norway.
quote:
The one-hour show -- which is set in Lillehammer, Norway, where New York transplant Frank "The Fixer" Tagliano tries to make a new life for himself -- was developed by and is a production of Norway's Rubicon TV AS. "Lilyhammer" will also air on Norwegian TV, Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos recently told TheWrap.
While Netflix made no shortage of stupid moves in 2011, they continue to be in the best position to disrupt traditional television in 2012.

disrupt?

I'm not sure why Karl always wants to disrupt traditional TV.
I like many shows that are on TV, but want some different/additional legitimate distribution outlets of which NetFlix maybe one. Hulu, google, amazon, etc. all have a chance to be others, hopefully at a netflix price point.

Exactly, by disrupt he means for them to do what you just said you want to happen.

Re: disrupt?

But it's not disruptive if it is a legitimate outlet for the content producers and owners.
Far too often here I see disrupt=destroy!!!!
some people believe that that will make content much cheaper... it won't. However you may end up with a choice of who you pay, and how when where you get to watch it.

So will they go to a tier price system?

Will Netflix charge extra to see the shows they produce?

The same "tier" format they tried to dodge with Starz?

And if the content is any good, will Netflix license it at a reasonable price point?

Re: So will they go to a tier price system?

That too.

I had a discussion with someone, who feels netflix should offer a tier system.
The 8 buck tier you get ads before the content streams [not during the show]. You also get the limit of 2 streams per home.

Then maybe at 15 bucks a month, you get ad free streams, up to 4 streams a month, and access to "new releases" [Hollywood would have to remove the 90 day delay that netflix has before this could go into effect.
Then maybe at 20-25 bucks a month you have up to 6 streams per home and access to "adult" content [porn].
Granted there are may sites that already stream free porn, so this might be a reach.

I can't see Netflix streaming porn as an issue, as they stream UR/NC-17/NR content already. Stuff that borders on porn.
I dunno if a tier system would work, though it would depend on what they were offering.

Probably so, but my point is that costs are rising and companies will use consumers to pay the bills, one way or another.

Yeah, and consumers are the customer, and have to pay other bills too... you know, like housing, schooling, food, clothing etc.

These companies need to remember they are providing a luxury service.... a want, not a need.... also, if people feel miserable because they are being squeezed heavily on every side, well, there's always the other choices.... not to pay at all.

They should remember that.

Businesses remember that just fine, however most consumers to date haven't flinched when it comes to absorbing rate increases. Until that trend shifts, don't expect anything else to change either

How does that affect my point that most consumers are still absorbing rate increases?

Re: So will they go to a tier price system?

It's relevant to my post. If they continue to increase rates, people will make choices... like you said, doing without is about the last option, so paying necessities, then pirating entertainment will grow.

The higher they price, I believe more piracy grows. Of course, we're trying to have piracy placed in the same category as terrorism or genocide, but still... can't stop the signal.

I agree, we would get both! The day Netflix forces ads is the day I go back to p2p. I don't mind paying for content, I mind the ads. Netflix with ads is no match for eztv.it

I get unlimited streaming no ads now for $8 a month.

Why would I pay more for less?

It's about gaining leverage over the big boys on the playground. It is not about disrupting the model or Netflix selling adds on their original shows.

If people really like the shows, other networks would wanna be able to license the show, this way Netflix gains leverage on saying something along the lines of: "You scratch my back, i ll scratch yours..." - Or: "I license my show to News Corp, if News Corp offers me good deals on licensing their content".

While that's a possibility, not all content owners are the distributors fighting over distribution rights and desires.

Hmmm but have you ever checked to see if you have consistent speeds?? With cable that can be a problem, with fios most likely not. BTW I have zero problems with NetFlix and I have a 10 down 2 up cable connection. I know neighbors down the street that don't get the steady speeds I get, why I have no idea except maybe there is a cut in the cables somewhere down the street.

Streams HD fine on my Xbox 360 on 2*10 cable from TW. Try running a wire instead of using Wifi.

Bring back those that died before their time

Try bringing back some sci-fi shows from the grave. Odyssey 5 had great potential before Showtime canned it. There are lots of devoted Firefly fans out there of course. Journeyman was great while it lasted.

Re: Bring back those that died before their time

They though of bringing back Firefly, there reason for not is because the set has already been destroyed and would cost them a lot of money to remake, and that the actors have aged a lot. To me the actors aging wouldn't be a problem, but I could understand them not wanting to spend money on building the set.

disrupting traditional television...

It's already disrupted traditional television at my house. I've got an assortment of devices (bluray players, rokus, PCs, handhelds) that all stream Netflix. The kids rarely watch TV anymore... and I'm glad. They have none of that angst about watching stuff religiously at certain times that I remember as a kid.

In terms of quality, I never expected full 1080p or anything approaching bluray quality. However, I usually get stuff at better than DVD quality. I figure things can only get better with time. Meanwhile, I will continue to get new releases on bluray by mail. (Ironic that netflix almost killed themselves last year when they tried to separate their services. LOL!)
