Ok, it's technically not a landline, but it basically is. If you really want another stupid phone to pick up, just get Ooma for like $3/mo. Personally, I'll go without. Anyone who needs to reach me knows my AT&T Mobility number.

Better yet magicjack PLUS witch is better.

Or Google Voice with an OBi100

MagicJack? Those are terrible. Ooma is supposed to have class-leading voice quality. It's a few hundred bucks to get started, but only a couple bucks a month after that.

IS there a smartphone plan with limited texting?

has done that (and voicemail transcription) forever now.

... anyone with out a smart phone and texting already doesn't really need texting.

Also, read the fine print, it's limited to 250 texts per day.. you can't send pictures or MMS. It's basically a chat program limited to 250 messages per day. I know people who can burn through that in a few hours. For a texting service, they sure have a lot of rules on it's use.

Unless you have a phone in your house, and it's YOUR phone, why would you want texting on it to use on the app on your smart phone. It's a poor concept, but I"m sure this will be the next mention for as to why they need to raise rates.. "as we continue to add new products and services"... bla.

Maybe they are trying for the AOL affect that when you start texting with it, you'll think twice before disconnecting your phone #.

I can say this.. it's not for me.

250 a day, and some people can burn through it in a few hours? So that's like texting for a few hours a day, every day? If they used it to the allowable capacity, that's over 7500 messages a month. I know lots of teens can probably do that in their sleep, but it's still not a horrible restriction.

I decided to break my triple play bundle and go back to Verizon since I am getting my security system activated and alarm systems work better with POTS instead of VoIP. My power went out last October for three days (many were without power for a week or more) and the EMTA battery died a couple hours later but the battery in my security panel lasted the whole time the power was out. Plus, our telephone/cable lines are underground. I installed a wireless alarm system myself and its going to be monitored by a local alarm company. The system is a DSC Alexor system.

Comcast VoIP was a good deal 5 or 6 years ago and if you needed nationwide calling, but these days, with mobile to mobile being free for the most part or if you have a friends & family option $39+ for VoIP isnt a deal anymore.

Of course, Cable TV isn't much of a deal anymore either ... and stand alone internet is quickly becoming less of a deal every year with price hikes on either the service, modems or both.

Same can be said of Charter services, and I'm pretty sure with all cable company's.

Don't see a use for it, for myself any way.
