Thanks Caps: Canadians Pay Steep Premium For Broadband
3.9% More on Average Than U.S. Consumer
by Karl Bode Friday 15-Jun-2012 tags: prices · competition · business · bandwidth · consumers · caps
Users in our Canadian broadband forum direct our attention to a new study by PricewaterhouseCoopers that found that thanks to a ramp up in caps, overages, and all manner of fees -- Canadian broadband consumers pay considerably more than their relatively less capped (for now) U.S. counterparts. "Canada’s broadband fees were lower than those in the United States in 2007–09, but as a result of large increases during the past two years, the average Canadian broadband subscriber paid 3.9% more in 2011 than the average U.S. subscriber did," the report said. The Canadian market has been among the most aggressive anywhere in steep overages, thanks largely to the lack of serious competition. Given the similar competitive problems and the relentless drum beat for the same price hikes in the U.S., American consumers won't be far behind in enjoying even higher rates.

Depends where you live in the US. For example in NJ we have a mean average of around 18mb/s which would rank the state in the top 1% (higher then asia and EU) of all the countries in the world.

Why would anyone be mad? Some of us love living in the USA. There is more to quality of life than a fast internet connection.

I do. Apparently you don't. The average internet speeds for those countries is significantly lower that what the poster indicated was the "slowest speed package" available in those countries.

Yes, I find that fact interesting and contradictory to his comments.

I concur. In France and the UK for example, most providers simply offer ADSL2+, generally "up to 24Mbps", with an average speed below this. The claim that a 100Mbps connection from SFR is the "slowest" on offer in France incorrect.

Usually people who have never lived overseas say this. I have and the grass for me was a lot greener.

I have reasons (family obligations) to stay in the US, but if I didn't I would live in South Korea, Japan, or Vietnam over the US any day of the week.

Other countries have Internet overseen and backed by the governments.

That's why they are superior to where they are today.

Capping and overages came from deregulation, a party that Romney stands on.

That is because one of the REAL purposes of the government is supposed to be the protection of the Country. So yes, everyone would be expecting their government to help them.

Go back to school and learn something.

Absolutely false for at least 3 countries in Asia.

These countries have effectively removed the greed from what they consider community items like Health Care and Broadband.

If you had even a month or two first hand experience there it would become overly obvious why this would not happen. Its a cultural approach and its not likely to change.

Sure they have other downsides there but its beyond the scope of this post.

What a bunch of whiners. Move to WV, your only choice in most areas is Frontier. You'll reap the benefits of no competition - very low speeds, constant outages, congestion and the bonus is the customer service reps will give you a hard time when you try to submit a service ticket. Why the race - the rest of you need to stop worrying we have already won.

To put it simply, trickle down economics don't work.

Somehow this twisted rationale is considered a legitimate platform for the Republican party this year.

Keystone Pipeline anyone? Oh the pipeline is already built? What? The oil industry lied?

Re: Available more places

Actually, we don't have a whole lot of choices. In most cases we have one provider and that's it. It was Rogers and Rogers only in my nicely populated urban area for well over 12 years. It's only recently that we had any choice. Rural areas don't have much choice, either.

It depends where you live in Canada....

The ISPs in Western Canada are way more competitive than the ones in central/east Canada.

They are? My sister in Alberta has 3/512 DSL, she pays the same price I pay for 25/1(actually 50/1) service. $49/mo. She has no option of any other ISP in her area. There is no cable, only DSL and they all offer the same price. There is a 2 year waiting list for 5/1 service. This is in Grande Cache, my friend in Grande Prarie is in exactly the same circumstances.

ChuckcZar

@teksavvy.com
But the majority of people in Canada live in Ontario. It's so bad here soon Bell's grandfathered 6/1 dsl will be over one hundred dollars a month and people actually pay it here. Ontario also sees obscene price hikes outside of massive overuse fees.

Well yes but..

We pay a higher premium for just about everything, so that should come as a surprise to no one.

Canadian "internet" is the worst of "first world" internet.

The way Bell Canada and Shaw treat their customers is nothing short of extortion.

Want to get on the internet with out issues? Tekksavy isn't an option, not as reliable thanks to Bell themselves.

So it's either "get ripped off, or get off the internet"

This is no different than installing toll booths on every street just because they know people have to pass.

No longer about speed

In Canada, it's no longer about the speed of the connection. The incumbents have made sure that the increased speeds just guarantees overages.

For years, incumbents never budged on upgrading the infrastructure, residents in Ontario were subjected to (and still are) 6/1 profile DSL, 16/1 profile cable. Only until the incumbents devised a way to monetize usage we see investment in infrastructure.

Caps will go up, but in iterative numbers with much fanfare from the incumbents marketing departments - however it will solely be based on overall usage and with a certain percentage guaranteed to pay overages.

The only way caps go away is if ISPs insist on measuring usage they be held accountable to government regulated measuring systems.
