Cisco tests EuroDocsis 3.0 and M-CMTS
(old news - 08:10AM Thursday Sep 13 2007)
tags: bandwidth · cable · world · networking
Cisco continues to push pre-DOCSIS 3.0 gear that can deliver 100Mbps service to customers while the world waits for the full DOCSIS 3.0 standard to arrive. In Europe, Cisco is testing EuroDocsis 3.0 and Modular cable modem termination systems (M-CMTS). The company says they've broken the real world residential cable speed record by delivering 120Mbps service in Amsterdam, and there's more speed coming:

"Proving we can achieve speeds well in excess of 120 Mbps in the field is only the start of our ED 3.0 trials," said Eric Lennon, Chief Technology Officer of UPC Broadband. "The field trial is the initial phase of a plan to deploy full EuroDocsis 3.0 technology which will enable speeds of up to 200 Mbps and above."
Again, if you're holding your breath waiting for 120Mbps in your suburban neighborhood, we'd urge you to stop. Despite promises, such speeds won't even begin to show up for at least two years and probably many more for those not in competitive markets. The city of Amsterdam is also in the midst of deploying a massive FTTH project to 40,000 homes.

Reality

What % of the "suburban neighborhood" is "holding their breath for 120Mbps". It would take multiple systems WFO to come close to consuming this bandwidth. Most businesses don't have this. I also don't believe the majority of content source feeds will deliver it.

Point is moot because of chicken and egg. Of course no one is providing a service that no one is capable of using because of infrastructure constraints. When speeds increase to 120Mbps no one will be offering source feeds of 120Gbps either.

The reality is that if 99% of Americans had access to 2Mps/1Mps at affordable prices and half of us had access to 30Mps/10Mps nearly all of us would be jumping for joy!

Even if the cable company will offer it...

... they will cap it so much it wouldn't be worth it.

I predict....

It will be 5 or 10 years before U.S. customers see anywhere near 100Mbps speed. It might be that long before even 50Mbps service is widely available.

even when it does happen I wouldn't be surprised if the "100Mbps tier" was over $100/mo.

I'd love to be wrong, but I doubt I am.

Re: I predict....

No because once the infastructure is in place all you have to do is let the market progress in the direction of falling bandwidth prices. At this point Verizon, TWC, Cablevision, AT&T, and whoever else is out there providing service just needs to flip a switch. Getting from 10Mbps to 15Mbps is a major hurdles because Docsis 1.1 can't quite handle it and 2.0 is pointless to implement since it won't do much for downloads and will soon be replaced by Docsis 3.0. once Docsis 3.0 is in place it is kind of like being in the days of when Docsis 1.1 was all the rage and 1Mbps was a gargantuan speed. You saw how cable raised speeds rather regularly from 1 to 2 to 3 to 5 to 7 and now some have 10. The same will happen once that jump to Docsis 3.0 occurs.

Cablevision will be first MSO to deliver Docsis 3.0 to its customers.

Picket for faster speeds...

The problem is demand for faster speeds just DOESN'T materialize in much of the country.. there are parts of the country where DSL below 768kb and cablemodem service below 1mbit symmetric is tolerated and paid a PREMIUM FOR!!!

You apathetic losers need to start picketing outside your provider's corporate offices to tell them to get off their ASS and raise the broadband speeds you cheap, stingy bastards!!

hmm

Why is it that people always leave out cablevision. Cablevision deployed docsis 2.0 already and boost users have uncapped downloads. meaning the downlaod is whatever the node and docsis 2 tech can handle.

I belive with the rate cablevision has been going, as insider stated they will be the first to docsis 3.

heck cablevision was testing narad equipment to provide 50/50 service. So I wouldnt count them out.

120Mbps down and 2Mbps up?

Anyone know what the upstream rate is? At this point I have 5Mbit/second service. I have plenty of download but my 512Kbps upload stinks. I can download digital photos like crazy but pushing them to the photo site is slow as hell.

Re: 120Mbps down and 2Mbps up?

Verizon has already been testing 100mbs down on their FIOS network. I have the 30mbs down and 5mbs up tier from them. Soon they are supposed to offer 50mbs down and 10mbs up in my area.
