Cut Fiber Causes Sprint Network Problems
Alaska Airlines Taken Offline Entirely...
A dual fiber cut this morning took a significant chunk of the Sprint wireless network offline this morning, in the process taking Alaska Airlines with it. The cut lines caused network problems from Seattle to Minneapolis today, in addition taking Alaska Airlines systems offline for much of the morning. "Earlier this morning, an accidental dual fibercut occurred on Sprint’s network causing a disruption in data and voice services for some Sprint customers in parts of Portland, Oregon; Seattle and Tacoma Washington; Minneapolis, Minnesota; and San Francisco and Sacramento, California," said Sprint in a prepared statement to the media. "Sprint network technicians are working aggressively to resolve this issue and we hope to have service restored soon," added the company.

Alaska Airlines

That would be Alaska Airlines, not Alaskan Airlines.

Roger that. Tail definitely says "Alaska" but I still need a runway assignment. We are running on fumes up here.

Every site I've ever been to had a Sprint DS3 (s) but I don't know if they have them all since I've only been to 4 or 5 sites that send locals to Dish and Direct.

I'll bet a backhoe was involved. Or 2.

Re: Tsk Tsk

THen Sprint has no clue about redundant connections and how it is REALLY supposed to be done.

"Accidental" dual cut?

But seriously, how does a redundant fiber loop get "accidently" whacked on both ends?

More often than you would think. I bet someone in Alaska Airlines IT department got to say "I told you so" today.

If you are running something that's this important NEVER put all of your eggs in one basket. I can thing of many reasons besides fiber cuts why this is a bad network design for something that's so mission critical.

Depends on the technology.

One I'm familiar with has a ring structure, it's designed so that with one cut in the ring everyone can still talk to each other. But if you had a second cut, you'd get a partition, with the nodes on each segment being able to talk to each other but not to nodes on the other segment.

The dual fibers would be additional redundancy on top of this, so that if a repeater or whatever fails, the other fiber can carry all the load.

However all of the above is merely semi-informed speculation, without knowing the architecture I can't go any further, I can just say the above posited architecture would be a good one and would very seldom fail outright.

And of course as others have noted Alaska Airlines perhaps should have not been so dependent on a single vendor, but that's a $$$ vs. risk judgement and one they still might be ahead on.

Lots of GFs broke up with their BFs this morning.

I am pretty sure that is what happened this morning, esp if the GF is on a different service beside Sprint and their BFs has Sprint.

How about ..
