Want to be able to skip preview then be prepared to pay $4 for the movie. No such thing as a free lunch. Here's an idea go take a shit, fix some popcorn and drinks and the previews will be over by then.

They tried offering DRM-locked music and it didn't fly with consumers because they could pirate convenient, universally usable music.
They were forced to offer consumers what they really wanted. MP3s and DRM-free iTunes downloads. Huge difference between DRM and previews on DVDs, this discussion is about previews. Personally I don't give 2 shits if you want to make copies of your DVDs for personal use. Doesn't matter to me.

| | | Yeah it sucks. Same thing in the movie theaters. Last time I went it was about 30 minutes of promotions and ads before the movie started. Usually when you pay for something, you don't don't have to put up with ads. C'ept for the movie industry, who milks your soul for every last dollar they can squeeze out of you. | |

| Re: Rental Delays Breed Pirating Those are OK as long as they aren't glaringly obvious. Every vehicle in the movie is a new Ford? OK, I can deal with it, it doesn't distract from the movie that much. The lead characters carrying on a dialog for 90 seconds about how good a fucking Pepsi tastes? Ruins the movie. | |

| Re: Rental Delays Breed Pirating It was a generalization used to make a point. I don't have a specific example handy but I wouldn't be surprised if more than one exists.
I do have an example of blatant placement advertising, but it was in a TV show though. This season on the Showtime series "Episodes" (my wife likes it and forces me to watch it with her) two of the lead characters received new cars as gifts. I think they were Mercedes, but not entirely sure. Anyway, they were prominently displayed in most of the episodes. And in the episode when they first appeared one of the lead characters went on and on about the features of the car.

| Re: Rental Delays Breed Pirating My wife loves Project Runway. That show has become a 1 hour commercial basically. There was the Infiniti challenge, they always show random makeup stuff and then the people talking how they love the company's product. It's even built into the scripts. | |

They sold that DVD at retail which means they made a profit and a hefty profit at that. Going to figure in their sheer volume, it likely costs a studio maybe two bucks to get a DVD or Blu-Ray from fab to Walmart. blank media is exceptionally cheap per unit at the millions of disks volume, And when you ship out that much stuff UPS also offers a huge discount

You might want to check that assumption! I am not going to tell you to stop, but I searched on, "ripping dvd fair use", and came up with some interesting links, dating to 2006, where MPAA/RIAA not only believe it is wrong (both for CDs, and for DVDs), but plan to push it into law.
