Really?Why is there a lot of money to be made here? Every passenger probably already has the internet on their phones. Plus internet at home. I wouldn't mind some integrated features that operate over wifi. However, don't expect me to pay yet another internet bill. | |

Don't want any monthly payments for a car I'm only in one hour per day during the week and 0-60 minutes on weekends.

I agree. I don't need to have to pay for all this crap they add into cars these days and that I never use. I don't need DVD players, GPS, cars that park themselves or any of these useless sensory gadgets that add $5G to the price of a car. | |

I do however expect these car manufacturers to strategically block such Bluetooth syncing so if you don't pay for the in-car service, you can't just run it from your phone (without an auxiliary cable of course) | |

I can literally hit the cap on my iPhone in about 15 seconds of downloading. That's over $1 per second.
I think the concept is the car can be off the cap. Else you're paying $90 a month for data just to listen to Pandora on the way to work. | |

The theoretical peak speed with LTE is 300mbits. 15 seconds * 300 mbits is still just over 500megabytes. And you are never going to get anywhere near 300mbits. If you get 5% of that you're doing really good. | |

Last speed test was 27mb down. 27 / 8 = 3.375.
300 / 3.375 = 88.88888888888889 seconds.

Sprint barely has LTE so it will also have to fall back on their miserable 3G network. Else this service will be pretty useless if you can use it in only a fraction of metro areas.
Eventually every carrier will jump on this and pick their brands to be friends with.

Re: Really?Their footprint is still small. However Network Vision is reported to be on or ahead on their deployment schedule. They are basically deploying an entirely new network. So yes as a Sprint customer I do agree that their 3G is pretty poor. The Network Vision upgrade is supposed to ease that problem as well. That still dosnt change the fact that they are unlimited which was the point I was commenting on. | |

I agree. Makes more sense to just allow in-dash systems to connect to and work thru Bluetooth or WiFi connections to smartphones to update traffic info, map updates, SMS to speech, etc. Who needs another system tied to 1 cell carrier in the car. Better to connect to many different cellphone models using multiple carriers. | |

Better off with a removable tablet...People would be better off with a removable tablet that's installed in the dash.... Perhaps an iPad/iPad Mini or Galaxy Tab....
The system software is easily upgradable. The apps are as well.
Charges in the car... Take it with you if you want to.
I don't know why carmakers haven't taken this "off the shelf" approach... | |

Unless this turkey (sprint), or as you would like, some sort of removable tablet can give them those kinds of numbers (and preferably more), dealers won't have much incentive to push those options via manufacturers. | |

Agreed. What happens if you want to change carriers and your in-dash unit isn't compatible with other carriers? What happens when you drive to Mexico or Canada and your chosen US carrier isn't GSM?
The idea of having Internet access in the car and sharing it with multiple passenger devices is neat but building it into the car seems like the wrong implementation.
The auto manufacturers must be taking this route because they smell a recurring revenue stream. Even though they might only get pennies per subscriber per month, if you multiply it by millions of future cars, I'll bet it smells pretty good. Top this off by the fact that the car owner now pays for a connection through which they can spy on your car's computer and "upgrade" it. BINGO! There's plenty of justification!
If we forget recurring revenue, access to the car's computer still seems better if inverted where the car is a WiFi client to whatever is in range. | |

sounds good to me...I'd love to not have to put my phone in the dash mount and use it for GPS/music as i do now. It is so much better than anything currently available in a car that i can't imagine NOT having an internet-connected device in my car 24/7, but i wish it didnt have to be my phone.
and some people commute 1.5-3hrs/day or work out of their car for a living, literally sitting in it for 8-10 hrs every single day. | |

Two WordsInternet Radio. I happen to know that the traditional radio stations have been seeing this coming for several years now. It was one of the reasons that Clear Channel set up iHeartRadio. Pandora doesn't work for news, live sports or traffic. | |

not a bad ideaas long as I have an option to connect it to the public network via my smartphone and use my existing smartphone plan.
Let not dismiss the built-in broadband system though. It will be useful for many people using the same car without having each one depend on his/her smartphone, access to phone/nav when phone dies or gets broken, and let alone used by companies like car rental agencies who will lease it to foreign tourist, etc. | |

Embedded OE electronics in cars...Embedded OE dashes/radios/electronics on cars get outdated in about 1 year and is not easily upgradable.
Look at the radio/nav systems from relative "new" cars (~2005 or so). They do not have the features and functions of a ~$200 iphone/android phone. That embedded nav are usually a ~$1000+ option when purchased with the car.
They need upgradable OS based car radio/nav/systems, which I guess is what a car PC's currently are. | |

So texting and driving are bad, but watching videos are ok?Funny how companies seem to be eager to push "broadband" to cars. But at the same time Drivers are murdering people while they drive and text, drive and put make up on, drive and change radio stations, drive and sleep, drive and drink, drive and etc, etc, etc.
I understand having a broadband connected car means up to date weather and road conditions. But it won't stop there. | |
