that lowering caps is a method to increase profits? I would hope most people see it as what it really is, a money grab.

They did tell the truth... "to better manage internet investment" is basically saying that they want to see a higher return on their investment = increase profits.

Problem is that the companies own the infrastructure, as well as the media distribution channels, right, etc... As a result, they want to maximize your internet costs so that you are forced to purchase TV services, VOD, etc off them at an inflated rate.

It's my belief that the only way this will ever get resolved is when the government/CRTC steps in and has it so that you can't own the infrastructure and be a content provider as well. Just too much conflict of interest.

Both the Canadian and American markets are the least competitive and most overpriced in the OECD.

Instead of the costs of the services coming down, they're actually increasing and providing less for it too.

Canadians are more vicious and the pioneers of this stuff.

Our probably most evil telco, ATT, is a mere amateur to some of the stuff that occurs up north.

Both markets suffer from a severe lack of competition, due to this hands off governmental approach in the markets. When you compare the market to Europe or even the Aussies, our services look like an absolute joke.

The Aussies are probably closest to the Canadians and their market and the options (services) available are blowing them out of the water; particularly as their nation wholesale NBN FTTH roll-out ramps up.

I wouldn't say it's a hands off approach.

It's the who is paying for the hands of change.

Canada is in some respects worse that the US because it has a WAY lower population density than we do, so rural means rural. Once you are outside of the metros, Canada is sparsely populated.

Now telus and bell are the traditional telcos (generally west/east), they are also big wireless companies too. Competition (if it exists) for Telus is generally Shaw cable and sometimes Rogers. In metro areas (bro lives in Vancouver) they have the latest and greatest D3 shaw CM. Since media is clamped down bigtime in Canada, big GB months are difficult to do (like no Pandora, etc. Netflix has a vastly inferior library)...

You can see the notes on them raising rates/lowering caps all the time.

On the upside, they do have third party regulations (like CLECs used to be) for now, and they have better packages but the lines are still SERVICED by the incumbents and obviously that has some tension in the field.

When the inlaws converted from Rogers to Teksavvy (the exact same line mind you), they cut the old line, added a new one by splitting a neighbors one, and then left the cable on the ground (w/ a red tag meaning the evil third party line :_).

Well I gave TS an earful (not their fault), and they came back and fixed it. It seems ethics is not high on the list. I know a lot of Verizon installers and OMG the stories they tell, which I won't repeat.....

If TELUS does something like this, Shaw follows suite -- and vica versa.

Yes. Move. The ultimate solution. Instead of companies doing the right thing and not being greedy jerks, customers should have to move to another freaking region in order to have access to services that aren't gimped or crippled or capped or throttled.

Fortunately Telus isn't actually monitoring your usage and doesn't bill you based upon it (but that all could change with these lower caps)

I'd doubt highly they're willing to suffer the inevitable customer service backlash simply to lower a cap they have no intention of enforcing. My guess is the next step is a monitoring tool and then a big stick for those exceeding the cap.

They should ask Shaw how their monitoring efforts are going. A year later and Shaw still hasn't rolled out its hard caps.

I will tell you, as a former Telus customer, they most definitely do enforce their limits. They threatened to shut down my account when I went over so I switched to a different company.

Guys many are sure seeing the truth. The Telcos are grabbing as much they can. Funny the employee's don't benefit. Solely the CEO's with their grabs and outsourcing jobs. Saving money and killing the eco systems on both sides of the borders. Bell has a 25 gig quota Rogers 60 gig 70 if speak nice things. Telus has them all beat if its dropping to 100gig. Start by cutting back yourself. Go out on the street and play kick the can. Read books - hey how about hanging out with your friends like the old days face to face. Cut back to gaming a little online viewing and email crap. Tell them you won't take it and you'll simply lower the services yourself. Try it you might like it. !

Teksavy, Acanac there are others. I have unlimited useage and pretty fast 16 service for a reasonable price. And it's stable
