Cox Latest to Offer Wi-Fi
750 Free Hotspots in Virginia and Connecticut
Following on the heels of Cablevision, Comcast and Time Warner Cable, Cox Communications is the latest cable operator to offer their broadband and television subscribers free Wi-Fi connectivity. The company is holding a press event later today to announce that they'll be offering the free Wi-Fi service at more than 750 Wi-Fi hotspots located in popular, high traffic locations such as shopping districts, cafes, malls, arenas, restaurants and parks. As the company's coverage map indicates, the deployment is focused primarily on the company's more profitable markets in Northern Virginia and Connecticut. The Cox Wi-Fi FAQ has some more detail.

No Roaming Yet

According to their FAQ, they are not supporting roaming yet. I guess they have figure out how to integrate with the CableWiFi consortium. For Connecticut at least, it would allow movement between Cox territory and Cablevision territory. Cablevision though has a heck of a lot more hotspots installed than just about any other carrier, and with a smaller service area.

Re: No Roaming Yet

CableWifi uses a company called NNU.com You can see on their page that they proudly promote those brands as customers and TWC has been with them for years.

I'm wondering.....

Are they going to have to serve themselves with 6 strike notices and possibly shut down their free service when people take advantage of them by downloading stuff they don't want to at home??

hhmmmm............

More than likely you will be required to login the same as the other companies, hence why it isn't free to everyone.

Caps?

Wonder if this counts against your caps on your account? I'm going to guess that answer to be yes.

Also I can see it now...the rogue access points setup as CoxWifi SSIDs with the fake signup pages just go snag peoples ID and password.
