Study: Consumers Rather Clueless About Digital Wallets
Just 1% Have Used Verizon/AT&T's Isis Platform
Sprint, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon all want users to start using their smartphone as a replacement for their debit card, but a new study suggests that consumers aren't quite ready for the shift. According to a new study from ComScore, 51% of consumers can even name a digital payment service other than Paypal, 12% have used applications like Google Wallet, and 1% have used the new Isis platform developed by T-Mobile. AT&T and Verizon. According to ComScore, there's a "muddied understanding" of the benefits these services can bring consumers, with many other consumers still worried about the security such services provide.

Consumer

Anyone surprised? We don't even have smartchip CC like Europe and Asia-Pac, as it would confuse the consumer too much.

These are the same consumers who now pay over $100 for a substandard North American cell service, so its not surprising.

Until Apple dumbs it down enough and calls it iWallet, they will not get it.

Re: Consumer

I prefer to use my credit card like a debit card. Don't want to be tied to a cell service this way.

Re: Consumer

That is the real reason why so many Americans don't want this. Must people don't want to be tied to a service on regards to monthly payments using your credit card. Even in Japan they prefer cash then to use credit cards. Except for public transportation where their use the Suika and Pasmo cards .

What's confusing? I'd suggest it's a chicken/egg thing. Until more vendors accept these payment services and consumers start seeing these forms of payment in action, there won't be an uptick in use. Apple can offer an "iWallet" all it wants, but the infrastructure needs to be in place to accept the payments. Right now, that's spotty at best in populated areas.

I have ZERO desire to act like other clueless idiots in the world who think that having a digital wallet is a good idea, or otherwise some sort of "revolution who's time has come"... I'm sorry, but I'll say it now, if anyone thinks a digital wallet is a good thing, then you're a bigger idiot that once thought.

Time has showed us that when you put things in the digital world, you're only giving access to those who want to steal your stuff. Have your identity stolen just one time to understand. But no.. the kids of today are going to be the ones that push this pig over the edge and encourage such stupidity. I just wish that we could establish a law that gives NO protection to those who use such devices to store their money and important credit/debit cards. Hell, the merchants and banks themselves can't even keep our information safe.. all we need are idiots wandering around with payment data in their phones driving up the cost of banking and fees for the rest of us to compensate.

I as a merchant won't even entertain accepting this as a form of payment.. ever!

cash

Cash is king.. I find it rather to easy to just swipe or not even swipe a card to pay for goods.. Way easy to go over your head in a hurry..

Re: cash

Cash is king currently, but it's utility in legal markets is declining. The archaic art of writing checks needs to disappear...please. Cash is tolerable, but the future is some sort of token (credit card, mobile device, or some other mechanism) for currency exchange.

Re: cash

I have no problem with cash, but the vast majority of people I know use their debit cards, often like a credit card for everything. Even with strangers, I very rarely see someone pay cash at the grocery store, department store, gas station etc.
It's all debits/credits.

I have checks, but no longer use them, everything is paid by ETF.

Same here and it is not a good idea, I try and talk people I know out of the habit. The protections of a credit card are just not there when you use your debit as a credit card... no insurance, disputing a charge is 10X harder since you money is already gone, just a hassle. Many people simply don't realize there is a difference.

Re: cash

I was burned by disputing a charge back in 2000 when I used a debit card to buy some deal online. The place charged me full price and took over 6 months to finally refund me. Never would use a debit card again for anything but gas. Anywhere can overcharge you and then the money can be gone if your account isn't holding a lot of money. I was in college and that set me back over $500 which hurt a lot then.

Google wallet seems pretty nice, except they want to charge a monthly fee to use it. So forget about that.

Re: cash

Yea.. a third party holding on to your debit/credit information so they can take a cut is just what the dr. ordered.

Debit cards are covered under Regulation E and have plenty of protection so long as YOU take steps to ensure that you are using them correctly. The only difference between the debit and credit card issue is one is backed by your money while the other is backed by the bank.

I've had issues with my debit cards in the past and the banks have always handled them correctly and within the time prescribed by law. (often sooner)

Make note though, charge backs are not there to protect you just because you dispute an issue with the merchant.. they're not going to stand behind you becuase you're not happy and want a refund either.. many people believe this. It's there to protect you against fraud AND from merchants who don't act in accordance with their own terms, and of course certain local, state, or federal laws. If you got over charged for an item, you had good documentation in your hand to prove your point, you should have had your provisional credit in 14 days, at least, while they disputed your claim.

Consumers like me arent clueless...

I don't use google wallet because I don't want my searches tied into my purchases just like I don't want my phone tied into my purchases.

I prefer cash over card anyway.

how about on prepaid ?

the one place i see this catching on it is not available. people on contracts with major carriers already have credit cards, etc. using a phone for payments makes no sense.

a lot of prepaid customers on the other hand do not have bank accounts, credit cards, etc. using prepaid balance on there cell accounts may actually make some sense instead of carrying cash.

Would love to use one, but neither is available!

I would love to use Google Wallet or Isis... but Google Wallet isn't available to Verizon Android phones with NFC, and Isis isn't available in my area. So here I sit, a willing consumer, that can't use either of the services that are out there because neither of them is available to me.

ComScore and cluelessness

ComScore and cluelessness are interesting words to appear in the same article. The clueless people are those who pay any attention to any "study" done by ComScore. For that matter, anyone who doesn't block ComScore's domain at their perimeter firewall might also be considered clueless IMO. There are good reasons why I have blocked ComScore for a very long time.

Re: ComScore and cluelessness

This is OT but what is wrong with ComScore? You are saying I can't provide proper feedback to Microsoft as a Microsoft Panelist for many years when the study administrator chosen by Microsoft is ComScore? So, Microsoft is "clueless" to use them to commission feedback from us Microsoft panelists? I don't consider myself "clueless" either!

You are of course free to do as you wish. Personally, I would not hire someone with a known history of child abuse as a babysitter/nanny, nor someone with a known history of armed robbery as a security guard, but that is just me. Just because Microsoft says "trust us" doesn't mean that I would ever trust them.

Here is a search link of this site's Security forum for "ComScore MarketScore" (MarketScore is a ComScore alias): »/nsear ··· ds=%2C18

I know for a fact that they have in the past installed stealth proxy servers with the capability to intercept even SSL sessions on some of my customers' systems (because I had to find the infection and remove it).

Re: nuff o the " new conn"

There are plenty of places that will not accept a bill that's over $20. Cash is not easily accepted everywhere. And last time I checked I am always getting hundreds out of an ATM machine.

I got stuck in a parking lot because of this and they said I had to leave something with them and an IOU to get out. Thankfully I was able to find enough spare change in my trunk to pay. They wouldn't accept my plea of you are supposed to accept any form of US currency.

There is no controlling authority that requires acceptance of cash. Not only that but in most cases the "cash" you're referring to is just a check issued by a non-government entity based on the credit of a government.

No thanks

Anything that makes it easier to spend, especially money you don't have, is not a good thing.

We don't need to be schooled in the "modern convenience" of digital wallets, which are oriented solely to relieve us of more of our money.

I'm all for targeted marketing and advertizing, but it doesn't need to be complemented by a "pay now" button.

I would love to use Google wallet...

but its not "supported" on my Samsung Galaxy S III (i9300 aka, International), even though it does work if you trick it to thinking its a Nexus 4.

But on the other hand I would never use a platform by the cell companies,

Uh, no...

Aside from the security issues (app permissions, malware, lost or stolen device etc.), I'm sure there will be a nice 'transaction fee' or similar to deal with as well.
