An Entire Year of AT&T U-Verse Junk Mail in One Photo
AT&T Would Really Like You to Sign Up For TV
by Karl Bode Wednesday 13-Feb-2013 tags: business · alternatives · bandwidth · AT&T U-Verse · AT&T
If you happen to live in an area that has what passes for United States broadband competition, you're probably all too aware of the massive load of junk mail you get from carriers. Here in New York, you could probably build an entire second home out of the junk mail received from Cablevision, Comcast and Verizon, as the three companies engage in bundle promotion battles.

One Consumerist reader decided to save and photograph an entire year of AT&T U-Verse junk mail, and the results are very impressive.

Where we live the variety of marketing pitches is always fun, ranging from shiny flyers to official-looking documents that proclaim to be time sensitive and require you carefully rip off each end -- only to deliver more triple play spam.

comcast just as bad

I get just as much mail from Comcast for xfinity. Which is odd b/c I am a business class customer. I can't get xfinity while I'm on contract. You'd think they might know this and not waste money marketing to me.

Re: comcast just as bad

Does it come to you in Spanish, like mine?

AT&T is also sending door-to-door salesmen through my neighborhood. One of them came by a couple of weeks ago and told me two big lies in less than a minute -- that AT&T no longer has a cap, and that I now have fiber to the home rather than just the node. Comcast at least hasn't done that.

I agreed to a 250gig cap on my business connection but if I go into the control panel and check usage it says I'm on unlimited.

Also as far as lying about FTTH vs FTTN. You are incorrect about NOT having FTTH. Some areas in fact DO have FTTH and several are over built with the copper stripped out.

But it is a lie if they claim it is available where it isn't available. In my last neighborhood some U-verse is FTTN, some is CO; but none is FTTH.

Depends on where you are. DSL can be quite reliable; it certainly has been for a number of my friends, and relatives, as well as myself.

I get the same amount from both Verizon and Comcast.

a Verizon salesperson even threw a pizza party in my apartment complex's laundry room to drum up new business, so I took his free pizza and then informed him I was already a Verizon customer

Saved mine too, just for entertainment. Guess I'm not the only one. I just counted 63 pieces of absolute junk mail from Comcast for 2012 wanting me to sign up for Internet service alone. Funny thing is that I already have Internet service from them.

Can I turn these in for credit on my bill?

AnonMan

@comcast.net

Junk...

It's sad, they don't let you unsubscribe neither and most of it is addressed to "Neighbor" or "Current Resident" etc. so you can't even refuse it as post office doesn't allow if addressed that way.

I was getting this crap when I had service, made me feel better about canceling it too! They waste so much money that could be used to reduce service cost. How about offer a way to opt-out if we don't want your junk!

I think I get that same crap from them every 5 to 10 days.

I love the headlines on their mailings. "Dear educated consumer"....

Of course I'm an educated consumer. That's why I didn't sign up for your service.

LOL. So true. I love the DSL ones, I just laugh. It's showing me 3mbps DSL for $30 or something. The heck as I would want that garbage. I pay double the price to Comcast, but I get 8x the bandwidth.

As I've told peeps in my circle, if they stop wasting the cash you pay them on this crap they will find yet another similar way to waste it.....and hey, they're keeping the USPS off life support.

And that's a good thing? The USPS should have died a long time ago. Any organization whose cornerstones are poor service and lazy employees doesn't deserve to be around, especially when there are private sector competitors who do a far superior job.

Then let them stay alive, with one employee per state whose job is to sit at a desk and try to stay awake all day. Pay them a salary of $1 per year. (I'll bet the Constitution doesn't mandate how big they have to be. )

The simple point is that the USPS is a huge waste of money, especially when FedEx can get stuff there faster and more reliably. I don't trust the USPS, and neither should others. (By extension, this also means I no longer trust UPS, as they contract some of their deliveries out to the USPS. Since they can't guarantee me that USPS won't handle/deliver my package, I don't use their services anymore.)

Re: Spam

I use USPS all of the time, I'm no powerseller, but I sell quite a bit of old electronics on ebay (for money to buy new electronics) and I've never had a problem.

Fedex and even UPS is a lot more expensive than USPS, what about customers who still want paper bills sending all of those bills out by Fedex would be ridiculously expensive. Also the USPS wouldn't be doing anywhere near as bad as they are currently doing if their weren't laws in place that force them to send money back to the government every year.

Send it back!

I used to save the junk mail like that from a couple places and after I had a nice stack and they sent me something with a reply envelope I would stuff all their stuff in it and mail it back to them. They get charged more than regualr postage rate for that service so getting a extra heavy package will get their attention pretty quick.

After doing this 2-3 times I no longer get their stuff.

Re: Send it back!

My dad had a VP that would do something similar. They used to get product catalogs from people wanting to see them equipment and often they didn't pay enough postage so they would charge us the postage. It would irritate him that we had to send someone over to the post office to pickup a package and then pay to pick it up only to find it was something we had not ordered. So he would go out to the warehouse and find a bunch of random nuts and bolts and send a package back to the sender, short of the postage, with a nice little note.

Insight

Insight Broadband (Now owned by Time Warner) is also really bad with this.

They send me 2-3 letters per week disquised as other companies. Then when I open the letter it's the same "LIMITED TIME ONLY" message about buying a TV package.

They take it a step farther though. About once per month I get a phone call from some "quality control" person to make sure my "service is working well"... "Oh it is?...Well can I interest you in upgrading your service to include TV with this limited time offer?"

YES! Insight is the king of that... looks like an official letter from something important then you open and it's "Insight" ... I finally memorized their mailing address and just looking knew it was Insight without opening it.. I would sometimes get 3-4 pieces of mail from them a week.

Take a look at the postmark. If it says "presorted standard" it's guaranteed to be junk mail.

Charter is horrid about that around here. They usually disguise it as something important, but the dead give away is that it is usually addressed to "Neighbor" Or "Current Resident." Since no one by those names live here, I write "return to sender, does not live here" on it and stick it back in the outgoing box. No way I am switching from FIOS to Charter lol.

Comcast sends out a lot of crap too

In my neighborhood Comcast sends out a lot of junkmail, I get something every week. My small town is surrounded by three cities that have municipal fiber ISPs and even though there is no active initiative to bring fiber to my town I wonder if Comcast is working proactively to fend it off, even though their deals suck. Centurylink has a crap product (1.5 Mbps) and they know it, they don't send out nearly as much garbage. There are 3 WISPs in my town that I know of, Digis is the only one that kind of advertises. Rapidwave and Miles Wiresless don't. I went with Miles, they have a solid product with no caps or ticky tack fees. Plus I know the owner-operator. He's a stand up guy.

endless messaging

UVerse pushes extremely hard to get you to sign up even if you are signed up. When was in an att area a few years ago they would stop at my door at least once a week, go to the local bar and setup a booth, mail me every week. I dint have a home phone luckily as they would have probably called me non stop. I moved and the price jumped 25% and that was 4 years ago.

Same Here

My parents (retired) have been absolutely inundated with uVerse marketing material once uVerse was rolled out in their area. Fortunately the door knockers seem to have gone away, but the mail bombs continue.

They are perfectly happy with the 3.0mpbs DSL line they get over AT&T DSL, and aren't interested in TV. They also don't see the point to switching to an unregulated phone service where prices can be raised at will. uVerse internet/phone prices aren't any better than what they pay right now.

I fully expect ATT will dump their wireline DSL subscribers at some point or force conversion to uVerse, but until that they things will stay just the way they are.

This is nothing.

Remember all those lovely Floppies/CDs from the numerous dial up companies that used to exist.

AOL sure as hell sent enough of them, but then you had compuserve, prodigy, sierra online, and a few others. Not counting the bulletin boards that you could dial into with your modem.

I never get Comcast junk mail

I never get junk mail from Comcast because I'm a paying customer. As a matter of fact I subscribe to one of their higher end triple play packages (XF Triple Play Premiere) so they have no need to market to me. But if I were to be an HSI only subscriber, I'd probably be bombarded with telemarketing, junk mail, and door knockers. But if I did not have cable, TV would totally suck. If I did not have a home phone, the alarm could not dial out and I'd have a call drop after waiting on hold for an hour. The reason I subscribe to HSI is totally self-explanatory.

I prefer to use a landline for lengthy phone calls. Nothing pisses me off more than having a call drop after waiting on hold for an hour. I spent over an hour on the phone with Comcast yesterday provisioning my phone modem and I had to do so on my cell phone. The call dropped and I was so angry that I was tempted to smash my iPhone on the basement floor but fortunately I gave the CSR my cell phone number at the beginning of the call so they called me back. The rep I dealt with deserves employee of the month as he was good. I was in the basement at the time as that is where my phone modem is located but I had 2-3 bars of reception.

I got the modem provisioned and I returned the rented modems.

whats ironic is I don't see much suddenlink spam.. they rather put it on the tv then send it to you lol!
