Aereo Heading to Boston in May
Pre-Registered Users Can Hop On Board May 15
Latest legal victory clutched tightly in hand, streaming OTA broadband video operator Aereo this week announced that they'll be expanding into the Boston market starting on May 15. According to a company press statement (pdf), the May 15 "Boston" launch date actually covers 4.5 million consumers in 16 counties across Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont. The May 15 launch date is also only for those who pre-registered with Aereo -- the service will be available in "Boston" to everyone else on May 30. Aereo is currently only available in the New York City area, though the company promised expansion into 22 additional markets after receiving $38 million in financing back in January.

Location

A closer read of the statement will show it's not just Boston, but parts of 3 states, and the most populated communities in Ma.
So maybe the title needs a little massage.

Re: Location

Boston DMA. Same as NYC, where they launched in the whole DMA, including Fairfield County, and parts of NY, NJ, and PA.

Springfield, Massachusetts viewing area

Here in Springfield (Western Mass), we get Springfield, Hartford, and Boston stations on Comcast. On DirecTV, they only have Springfield stations. I have DirecTV but I have broadcast basic on Comcast to get the cheaper rates on Internet. So I have the best of both worlds. I gave away the basement TV so the DTA is not hooked up right now but I plan on getting a TV for the Kitchen that I'll hook up to the DirecTV system using a Genie C31 Client and I'll hook the DTA up in the bedroom where I can split off the modem.

I wonder if Aereo will allow Springfield residents to sign up for Boston as we're technically part of the Boston viewing area even though we have our own market (not that I would subscribe since I already have two pay TV services that feed local OTA stations into my home).

Looks like Worcester Country (which they misspell on their website as "Worchester") is the furthest west that will be allowed to sign up.

Re: Springfield, Massachusetts viewing area

I wish Springfield would be consolidated into the Boston market as they have much better content on broadcast radio and TV. Springfield broadcast stations (other than local newscasts on TV) are crap. I don't even listen to broadcast radio anymore and the only tolerable radio station I can receive is 96.5 WTIC-FM out of Hartford. I just wish they'd shut down the Springfield radio stations and use the transmitters to simulcast Boston radio stations.

WWLP-TV is pretty good for newscasts and they broadcast Wheel and Jeopardy.

Doesn't help that they added Worcester county since at least in some parts of the city and areas south of the city can get Rhode Island stations thru Charter and OTA though where I live. So getting just Boston stations is not just worth it.

Can someone tell me where people get this Worchester stuff from? I haven't seen this mythical Worchester as all signs/maps/dictionaries lists Worcester as Worcester.

I wish this company would let you get the out of market stations, wouldn't mind paying $7 a month if I could get access to the NY FOX and CBS during football season.

Re: Springfield, Massachusetts viewing area

Apparently they are in the Boston DMA. Aereo isn't doing SV, only that DMA. Or at least not for now since they don't have the primary DMAs to do the SV channels.

There are laws against going out of DMA, except for cable operators, and then only with SV. The distant locals have gotten pretty locked down on DISH and DirecTV.

No. You are not in the Boston DMA. If you look at the map for NYC, it is extremely clear that it is by DMA, not by SV areas, which are a lot fuzzier than DMAs. NYC's SV area ends in Madison, CT, which is 93.1 miles out of GCT by rail miles. Most of CT is SV for Boston, Providence-New Bedford, or NYC.

Boston's actual DMA covers much of NH.

Aereo=Atlanta - Sign me up!

I am ready to ditch my "sluggish" OTA Tivo Premiere and stream Aereo to Apple TV.

Regional scope is huge

Much larger area than I would have guessed. Aereo's inclusion of Windham County, VT is a stretch. The addition of Aereo to existing Netflix impetus leads me to think we'll see a surge in cord cutters within this footprint. Yanks are tight with their money and not massive TV watchers to begin with. Comcast gonna be some pissed. Hey, maybe they'll lower their rates. ...nah.

Aereo's press release says service is available to residents in the following counties:
Massachusetts: Barnstable, Dukes, Essex, Middlesex, Nantucket, Norfolk, Plymouth, Suffolk, Worcester
New Hampshire: Belknap, Cheshire, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford
Vermont: Windham

Not really. It's part of the Boston/Worcester DMA. Cable TV providers have to provide the Boston locals.

Can't wait for it to come to Detroit

This seems like a cost-effective way to cut the cord in my situation.

Antenna reception in my house is a bit spotty (using an indoor antenna, I only get about half of the local stations), and an outdoor antenna is ugly and costs money. Then when you factor in the additional cost of buying a Tivo or other DVR and the monthly service fees that come along with it, it's just not practical.

Aereo, on the other hand, costs only $8/mo and includes DVR service. All the TVs in my house have a Roku, so there's no up front hardware cost, either.

I'm looking forward to this service coming to Detroit eventually. Hopefully, we have some NYCers on this site who use Aereo who can give us their two-cents on this service.

Please come to California!!

I live in area where I get no OTA coverage. Well I uses to pick up analog signals back in the day, I got about 6-7 local channels. Ever Since the switch to digital I lost them all. Yes I have a tv with a clear qam tuner but I am getting squat. In the mean time Comcast is shoving a hot spiked rod up my rear with their out of control TV rates. I would love to see Aereo come and save my rear.
