Cricket Launches $45 Unlimited 'Half is More' Pricing
Though Service is Throttled to Dial-Up Speeds After 1 GB
by Karl Bode 09:01AM Friday May 24 2013
Leap Wireless' Cricket brand this week launched what they're calling "Half is More" pricing, which the company claims offers users "unlimited plans for half the price of the competition." According to a Leap/Cricket press release, the company's new $45 Offering provides unlimited text, voice and data services. However, the company rather buries the fact that by "unlimited" they mean around 1 GB, after which you're throttled back to dial-up era speeds for the remainder of the month. "Cricket is challenging consumers and asking the question that if you can pay only half and get the same thing, why wouldn't you?" the company asks. Perhaps because you historically abuse the hell out of the word "unlimited"?

Cricket is a joke, period

I had them for like 3 months while searching for a wisp. They had some weird thing going where they would compress all the images to a shitty resolution. Like the DSLReports logo would look pixelated and what made me laugh is that they say they dont do any image compressing. Also customer service was a joke, a monkey could do their job. I called in a few times with one time getting disconnected with a guy in india after telling him my problem.

Re: Cricket is a joke, period

I had cricket for a few years ago before smart phones were popular and their customer service was horrible and was the reason that I left.

I had subscribed to a plan that included conditional call forwarding, a feature I wanted for google voice and was never able to get it working even after numerous trips to the store and phone calls to customer service. It was pulling teeth to get them to create a ticket for their network team and after two weeks that team closed the ticket without fixing the problem. I was so angry at the time I filed an FCC complaint but it didn't go anywhere since I was no longer a customer by the time the FCC sent it to cricket.

Truth in advertising

There needs to be a law preventing advertising of unlimited if your speed changes after 1GB or there's some other cap.

A joke is RIGHT. i had their usb stick modem that never got above dialup speeds and would rarely stay connected for longer than a half hour. and their website is closed at night.

Unlimited =! Unlimited speed

It just means you won't be shut off or charged an overage. Network management is OK. I wish the big carriers would do Unlimited they way they are, as you can go right up to the limit and a bit past without being charged an overage fee.

Unfortunately the FCC has barred Verizon from throttling it's 700 MHz spectrum it uses for LTE so they can't even consider such a plan.

Re: Unlimited =! Unlimited speed

Debatebly, the rules would apply that way, which would make absolutely no sense, and throttling has nothing to do with open access.
