Rogers Will Offer $10 Broadband to Low-Income Canadians
Following on the Heels of Similar Plans Here in the U.S.
Roger Communications this month announced the company will be offering $10 broadband to low-income Canadians who qualify. According to the company's press release, the discounted $10 service will offer speeds up to 3 Mbps, but will be capped at 30 GB of monthly usage. Comcast pioneered the not-entirely-altruistic idea in 2011 as a way to get approval for their acquisition of NBC Universal, and while purportedly helping the poor earned huge PR dividends, the offer was intentionally designed so that most people who needed it wouldn't qualify. Protests in Philadelphia ultimately drove the company to expand the offering so more could qualify, though the offer will still sunset in a few years.

What does that have to do with offering low-cost access for low income households?

Absolutely nothing, just "good" press for Robbers, pretending they are "giving back'

And for the Canadians who read this, Goldberg is still shilling for Robbers.

"Today's announcement is a huge step forward, demonstrating leadership in providing affordable internet access to families," said Mark Goldberg, Mark H. Goldberg & Associates Inc. and co-founder of The Canadian Telecom Summit. "This initiative benefits our communities and helps strengthen Canada's performance in a digital economy."

What a mouthful of verbal diarrhea

Useless speeds and pointless caps, well, it will just be a stupid way to throw away 10 bucks.

Considering society calls me poor based on my income, I can assure Rogers that offering me shit for 10 bucks, is precisely what I called it, shit.

I ate steak last night, t-bone steak. It's because I know how to spend 10 bucks well.

I am getting service from Electronic Box right now, because I know the value of REAL service. Hey it's not like E-Box is the only good option, there are a few out there.

I turfed cable entirely, based on a better way to spend 10 bucks. It's called Netflix. I would still be on cable, if they were to offer cable service for 10 bucks. Not just a basic package either. All their channels, ALL for 10 bucks. Do I care if they can't afford to do that? Nope, not my problem Rogers.

They can cram their pretense at generosity up their out port.

Re: Hi grandma

It's actually better if they focus it into better packages, but them being rogers means tying up everyone into a single package.

$10/month is cheap but it's not really good when you can probably go Teksavvy DSL for something of that price and higher caps.

Re: Hi grandma

Better packages? You mean more bandwidth and a higher cap? We are talking $10 here. Do you have options of other connections for $10/mth?

low income includes

Retired old people living on a fixed income. This will help them out. I am not a fan of rogers but this is good for people who have little money.

Provided they are qualified, which it even says most people won't. As stated above, just a bunch of verbal diarrhea!!

Who is the greedy one?

I find it interesting that a company can make an effort to provide broadband speeds at a cost that is low enough that a low income person can afford broadband Internet in their home and all the posts sound like Verruca Salt screaming at daddy to give her more because the offering isn't FTTH/fast enough/uncapped for $10

I don't see Rogers as the greedy one here.

Agreed. 3mbps isn't even that slow considering the only similarly priced alternative is dial-up.

Re: Who is the greedy one?

Rogers has an ulterior motive here, mark my words they do. Be it they lock you into a contract, expensive modem rental or a high installation cost.

This is one of the most hated companies in the country we're talking about here. They don't do something like this without wanting something in the end.

Looks like a good option for low-usage internet users.

If this is the case, I'll get this for my grandma. I currently have her using a rocket stick on my 6GB datashare plan.

It costs me $12, but she doesn't go over 1GB of data. If I can get 30GB for $10, that will be great.

Re: Looks like a good option for low-usage internet users.

Its only available in Toronto RGI housing, no where else. Just like how Comcast and Philadelphia made their agreement.
quote:
The Connected for Successâ„¢ initiative, part of the Rogers Youth Fundâ„¢, will start later this year in Toronto with Canada's largest social housing provider, Toronto Community Housing.

"Rogers has stepped up to create a tremendous opportunity for youth living in Toronto Community Housing," said Eugene Jones Jr., TCH President and Chief Executive Officer. "I thank Rogers, Microsoft Canada and Compugen for their leadership in opening the door to new possibilities in our communities, and look forward to working with them to implement this initiative."
Its also a partnership with M$ to provide bare minimum clone systems (loaded with spy-ware and filters).

You can bet Robbers and Microsoft are getting a MASSIVE subsidies for this.

Plus since it is a non standard account code you can bet TCH is the one administering the account as a part of the Housing Contract. Rogers will probably have nothing to do with it or staff 6 agents for 100,000 or more poeple (with hour long wait times)

How about ..
