tags: dsl · business · telco · AT&T U-Verse
AT&T's third quarter results show that the company now has 126,000 U-Verse IPTV subscribers. The company also reports that they added 2 million wireless customers (a record) and 499,000 DSL customers in the third quarter, bringing their DSL total to 13.8 million subscribers. Wireless is truly the company's cash cow: the company reports that in addition to record subscriber adds (65.7 million total), wireless data revenue surged 64%.

Where's Comcast Rick?

Oh no, they are going under soon just like Rick said!

Only $3.1 billion in profits and $30 billion in revenues this quarter, sell sell!

Re: Where's Comcast Rick?

HMMMMM..if my rough calculation is accurate..their number of Uverse customers added is barely over HALF what they expected.

I seem to recall their stating they expected 10,000 net additions per week?

Do some simple math and you'll see it's just over half that.

126,000 uverse subscribers now
51,000 end of last quarter

Net new subscribers = 75,000
divided by 90 days = 833 new subs. per day
833 x 7 days per wk = 5831 new subs per week.

Watch out for this companies numbers folks.
They really know how to work em to their benefit.

But, they do say this now..
"And our AT&T U-verse TV install rate already approaches our year-end target of 10,000 per week"

WELL HECK FOLKS..even 10 customers a week would APPROACH the 10K per week mark..right?

Also, try as I might..I can't find their number for LOSS of landlines this quarter?
Why don't they highlight that number?

I mean..He**..it's not like they're not a PHONE company..right?

ICP1..crow all you want but the way this company hits their numbers isn't the way they should hit them.
They buy out other companies and pump em up.

Let's talk instead about LOSS of landlines..and how UVERSE is REALLY doing.

After all, isn't that their next generation service?

Folks..would you like the REAL facts?
AT&T right now has 128,000 uverse customers.
That barely equals 1/3rd of the amount of landlines they're losing (or have lost)...PER QUARTER..in the recent past.

After ALL this time..that's what their new next generation service has produced.

And that's with the requirement that people still keep those landlines in order to get DSL service.

I'm telling you..this is the demise of AOL reincarnated.
GROWTH..via ACQUISITION..has been their mantra.

Even their bright spots..namely the partnership with Apple for the iphone..has seen that service come to customers via the slower edge network.

Where is the next generation AT&T that people have come to expect from this company?

Comcast is right..they are turtles.

HOLYCRAP folks..imagine what's going to happen with docsis 3.0 and verizon 20/20 service?

That 128k customers is going to ZERO.That is what.

AT&T..you must..I repeat Must..I repeat MUST..go with FTTH TODAY.
NOW. Right now. make the announcement.

Before it's too late.

Re: Where's Comcast Rick?

WHOA!! WAIT a second folks..Exactly how many landlines is this company losing anyway? Seeing they don't want to break it out for you, let's do it here.

Here's what they say.

"Continued Growth in Consumer Connections. AT&T regional consumer revenue connections (retail access lines, high speed Internet plus video connections) totaled 49.6 million at the end of the third quarter, up 895,000 or 1.8 percent over the past year, and regional consumer revenues grew 0.1 percent. Growth in connections reflects gains in high speed Internet and video over the past year totaling 2.7 million, which more than offset net declines in traditional retail consumer access lines."

Soooo..their NET year over year is up 895,000.
GAINS in other connections have been 2.7 Million offsetting that number.

Does this mean that year over year..they have lost
ONE POINT EIGHT MILLION LANDLINES?

OH yea folks. I think that's EXACTLY what that creative passage means in plain talking folk kind of speak.

Jeesh..I wonder if Uverse and those whopping 833 people joining them everyday last quarter will save them from that?

God. It's worse than I thought.

thanks, wouldn't have been a thread w/o you.

PS 60-70% of their revenues are now wireless and enterprise data, so your whole "land lines" and "Uverse" descriptions even if accurate, don't mean a whole lot to total revenues anymore...

Awesome. That's just freaking awesome. Now the nations..or worlds largest phone company is no longer a phone company at all so no one has to worry anymore.

You just made my day!

And, of course you're acknowledging as well that my description is accurate..just like all the "rick" bashers above do with every post they make.

Of course their posts are never about the issues at hand..namely 1.8 million landlines fleeing the last year or the flop that is now totally apparent..called Uverse.

It's all about Rick instead.

Well..too bad that AT&T didn't heed my advice starting a year and half ago.

They'd be sitting right where verizon is instead...and would truly be a world class next generation provider.

And, to Cod and the others above..what you really should be doing instead of attempting to discredit me for simply being the voice of reason....is to bring whatever pressure you can to bear on your employer. And help to show them the way.

Because ...really..they're as lost as lost can be.

The phone company..losing almost 2 million landlines the last year. Good God..that's more than AOL lost dialup customers man.

And Uverse? OMFG.

What a disaster.

Rick, did someone at AT&T steal your girlfriend? Burn down your house? Throw rocks at your mama?

It seems like your only reason for having an account here is to make long winded posts blasting AT&T. Over and over and over, etc.

We get it. You don't like 'em.

Someone should start a website, for example: www.ricksrants.com and post all of his anti at&t rhetoric. Users could vote & rank his drivel according to F.U.D., lies, and comical predictions.

Verizon has almost half a million customers for their TV service. AT&T is keeping pace with them on a launch date perspective with far less being spent.

It seems like from a business perspective, Rick is Rong.

I wonder what his spin will be when AT&T catches and surpasses Verizon's TV numbers? I wonderif it'll be before the reach 1 million or if it will take them to 2 million to pass them?

People who text and use data on wireless are getting gouged. It costs very, very little to the providers but they charge mucho dinero for it.

No wonder revenues have soared there.

Until AT&T brings the Fiber to the home tho they will experience issues in their other markets.

Not true. I was able to watch all my local channels, ESPN, CNN, HBO, Showtime and some others. I still had my internet connection too.

When I had cable, an outage took down everything.

There are thousands more waiting in the wings...

And nobody outside of affluent properties or regions can touch the service. They could easily add a few more thousand if they just came to my neck of the woods - my checkbook's waaaaaiiiiiting. Never mind the fact that the SBC/AT&T building and wire plant for the region is *literally* a stone's throw away - 2 blocks over.

Fiber please!

Fact: Closest Uverse installation to me? A gated community in Texas. Bet you dollars to donuts that Bentonville to the North is serviced before it even touches Springdale or Fayetteville Arkansas. And the only things to do up in Bentonville besides polishing your BMW or mowing the 5 acre lawn your 2+ million dollar house rests on is to go to your job at Walmart corporate. People only go there to retire, golf or pass through on their way to the Missouri border to get alcohol on a Sunday. But because that is where the money is in NWA, that's where Uverse will be before anywhere else. I would LOVE to be proven wrong.

Fact: Trailer parks in So-Cal (Santa Clarita) had Uverse before my house did.
Fact: Saugus had Uverse installed before most of Valencia proper (higher valued property).
Fact: Vista Ridge and many of the expensive homes in Newhall (hills) do not have Uverse at all, while many MDU's do.

Well then I stand semi-corrected. I guess it just depends on which way the network is prone to growth. I am not really interested in Uverse so much as getting FTT(x) and faster Internet. I haven't watched my TV/Monitor in over 8 years. *laugh*

the new AT&T

with the system failure weekend past, subscriber hookups down, VRAD size, franchise issues in Ct, BellSouth line conditioning status not clear, I wonder how committed the folks in Bedminister are with UVerse. It almost seems as though their doing IPTV because competitors are and would prefer the whole idea disappear in the night

Correct... they are head quartered in San Antonio.
I just switch my cell back to ATT, I have ATT DSL at home and I currently have dish network (partnered with ATT) and maybe planning on going to U-Verse in the future. I overall happy with them. Now Verizon & Sprint can kiss my @$$.
Plus I used to work for them in San Ramon, Ca for their Tier 2 DSL support... that sucked but I learned alot there.

Wireless data

64% surge in wireless data revenue is the most interesting to me. It is related to one of my favorite articles of the year "How Much Are You Paying for SMS Bandwith?" »How Much Are You Paying For SMS Bandwidth?

Not sure if SMS bandwith is included in the category of "wireless data revenue," but I'm sure $1000 a MB made them a few bucks this quarter.

Re: Wireless data

I am sure iPhone users have used a lot of wireless data, but $50 a month for unlimited data cannot compare to $1000 a MB in text messages.

Also, they had 2 million additional customers this quarter and this was the first quarter AT&T was providing service for iPhone users. Not sure how many of those 2 million are iPhone, probably a lot, but their total now comes to 65 million.

I'm really not trying to be annoying, but there are less than 2 million iPhone subscribers at AT&T and 63+ million non-iPhone text-messaging-ready subscribers.

Yup - increased cost of SMS is why I put a block on all SMS (that and I was being spammed by glomobi.com).
AT&T Wireless = free unlimited inbound sms/mms
AT&T = $0.10/message inbound/outbound
Nextel BB7100i = unlimited email/text/sms/mms and no bill.
