Adelphia Under Fire in Maryland
MD County takes action against cable provider
(old news - 02:54PM Monday Feb 11 2002)
tags: cable · trouble
Carroll County, MD has decided to take part of a performance bond from Adelphia Cable for infractions connected with its PowerLink Internet service, and will probably take further action in April. Complaints include inaccessible e-mail, failure to log onto more than a third of the time, lousy customer service, and nothing but general answers to specific problems. The Carroll County Times and Sunspot are doing the local reporting.

I've heard and seen so many bad things about them. Unfortunately, when cable comes where I'm at, it'll be the only thing we'll have.

Customer Service As Defined By George Carlin

"Complaints include inaccessible e-mail, failure to log onto more than a third of the time, lousy customer service, and nothing but general answers to specific problems."

And this is headline news? Got more for you - their track record isn't unique to Maryland, not by a longshot. Everyone blessed to live within their franchise know that Adelphia's idea of "servicing the customer" comes straight from a George Carlin monologue.

True, but SOMETIMES you get a good one...

This seems to be few and far between, but I actually got to talk to a tier 2 tech that knew something. I was fixing a friend's computer at my house and could not get the machine to get a DHCP address. I called to find out why my machine does not have a problem and his does (BTW the NIC card was functional), and the tech said that the cable modem marrys itself to the NIC card....
I never thought of that....

so SOMETIMES you get a good tech....

Issue Here is Respect for the Customer

Irrespective of inexcusable delays in rebuilding cable plant, and intermittent outages that would lead anyone to conclude that such service is really no service, Adelphia has enraged it subscribers and local franchise authorities with its refusal to provide any information with respect to anticipated dates of launching new services or remedying serious problems with its existing service.

Adelphia appears to be unique in this respect, and clearly earns, IMHO, the title as the worst cable operator among the major MSOs. Any local franchising authority would be remiss not to nail this company to the wall when negotiating a new franchise agreement for this operator has demonstrated a propensity to abuse its de facto monopoly to a level unprecedented in recent history.

It's nice to know...

I find comfort in the fact that with the right "channels", complaints will be taken seriously. The problem is when people are having a bad experience with their internet provider they just complain to their friends and family. Therefore nothing is done to improve the situation.

It would be most helpful if someone would be willing to provide local and national addresses and phone numbers for organizations that will help out. Consumer advocates. Or maybe that information is already posted somewhere and a link to that site would be helpful.

Words from an Adelphia employee...

Here is a quote from a "cough* "concerned Adelphia employee... (quote can be found in the Adelphia forum here on DSLR).
quote:
this isn't an information forum it is who can slam adelphia the hardest
This is the fundamental issue, "they" are not listening to their customers. According to them, we are the ones with the problem. It is sad...

Adelphia does get better

In Blacksburg, VA the one-way powerlink service that was here for so long was horrible. I think they had 3 or 4 nodes for the entire town. After the long awaited digital cable / fiber optic upgrade, each apartment complex alone has 4-6 nodes and powerlink service has been (at the risk of sounding fanatic) outstanding.

I waited for years to finally get broadband so I know the wait can be frustrating, probably more so if you already have broadband that's slow and crappy. Adelphia gets bashed a lot, but when they finally do get around to doing their own upgrades, they do know what they are doing and can provide good service. If only they would improve their customer relations to let people know WHEN they plan on upgrading. It might help them in this Maryland situation.

Re: Adelphia does get better

It may be good now;I know I have it too but I look for it to get like everyone else's before it's over.I've had it since they first turned it on as a "beta tester" if you will and haven't had too many outages yet but as it grows I don't expect to have the same attitude about it.I do hope I'm wrong though.

....

Adelphia is not bad everywhere. It isn't bad from a place that they took over. Comcast used to be the provider here about 1/2 a year ago here. I get excellent speeds like before, but they need the money to upgrade their current situation. If they get a major loan, I am pretty sure that they could make the payment back, if after they upgrade their status, mainly because they won't have to be giving refunds daily for downtime.

A family owned and operated business!

A family owned and operated business, Adelphia is the brainchild of the Don Vito Rigas family. The first clue of what you are dealing with comes when the Adelphia installer arrives at your home wearing a mask. After you point out to the installer the difference between your computer and the water heater they attempt to connect your computer to their "service". Adelphia starts at the bottom and works it way down from there. When you have problems, and 90 percent of you will, just wait until you call customer service, better known as the spin room. If Adelphia had owned the Titanic when it struck the iceberg they would have made an announcement that the ship was going to be delayed because it had stopped to take on ice. Most every one you talk to has a voice and mannerism eerily like Homer Simpson’s.

The bottom line is unless you happen to live in Santa Monica, Buffalo, or a few other isolated pockets in places such as Ohio and Florida you are going to have nothing but problems with Adelphia. They are absolutely, positively, without a doubt the worse cable broadband company in America.

The most annoying thing about them is that the ownership really doesn’t care about anything other than getting your money. Their philosophy is pretty straightforward. Sign up as many people as possible and get as much money as possible. Sign them up even if you know that you can’t possibly deliver anything close to what you are advertising. After they get their customers they will then deal with providing an infrastructure capable of providing what they advertised. Adelphia has to do it that way because they don’t currently have an adequate network or infrastructure.

They are plain and simple a dishonest company at the upper levels. They are consistently rated dead last by virtually every reputable rating service in the nation. And, they are getting worse. When the customer calls in the closest thing to satisfaction they can get is by verbally taking out their frustrations on some poor customer service representative who has no control over the problem the customer is experiencing and is untrained, underpaid, and used by ownership as a shield between them and the customers.

I am confident if you went into the office of the highest ranking member of the company, on the wall behind their desk would be the motto: "Greed is Good!" and above that a picture of the Gordon Gekko character from the movie "Wall Street".

Re: A family owned and operated business!

Ditto. Rigas's philosophy which he has conveyed: Put out the product so that it's one step ahead of the competition, even if it doesn't work right and we'll fix the problems later. Yea we'll see about that.

Fact: Adelphia just got rid of it's ABIZ business which sucked 2 Billion + from it over the past 4 years, money which could have gone to sorely needed cable and network improvements. Instead it went to new markets where ABIZ didn't have any on-net fiber and obviously couldn't even be supported, all for the sake of "national brand name" familiarity.

Now look at where ABIZ is at, nearly bankrupt. It's stock is what, 11 or 12 cents? What a joke! Trying to take in every last penny before going down for the count.

Good luck Adelphia.

I live in Suburban Buffalo and unless they got a lot better this past year then I challenge your statement. I said it before, I actually went back to dial-up for a period rather than go back to Adelphia.

How can we do something like this in our county?

I've been running at 47k now for about 2 weeks, techs have no idea wth they are doing, i take 30-40 hops to go anywhere, ping times average around 400ms.it jumps fro 7ms to 290ms just in house. trace route reports back ip addy of a server thats having problems, i did a simple whois on the ip and walaa .. umm sir its owned by YOU PEOPLE. They had no idea, and asked if their techs could call me since I have "awesome equipment" lol. No, just LINUX AND A BRAIN.
47 k , i download at 3-2k/sec. I can dial up on aol and get 5k!!!!!! U GUYS SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm going to see about filing suit , class action , theres got to be SLA's and such involved. Most cable co's guarantee minimum ISDN speeds, well this is 56k speed and Im not the only one. I got emails from people 20 miles away with tthe same problems. Any lawyers out there? mfollweiler@mac.com

Not surprised

I'm not surprised.

I don't think that Adelphia's cable TV service is that good (for a number of reason) so why would I want their Internet service?
Thank God I have DSL.....

Hey, at least you guys can even get PowerLink. They're still "upgrading" my area, and have been for the past two years. Thank god for Qwest, or I'd still be on IDSL.

Number one you are lucky that Powerlink is not available in your area. In their case they are worse than nothing. Number two, they've been "upgrading" everywhere for the past two years. At least that is what they say. Of course, nine times out of ten it works worse after the upgrade.

Powerlink OK here

Although I had some problems in the beginning, all works very well now. Nearly 100% up time and download speeds near T1 speed (100-150 kbps). I agree their customer service is the worst. When I was having problems, nobody was concerned or competent. However, they did find the problem on their own eventually and things work great! I have to say I like my PowerLink. Now if I can just figure out a way to make the CM accept two CPE's...

Re: If you dont have the service dont talk about it !!

So the 6th Largest cable company in the country is small? OK, I believe you're from coudersport. I thought it was a rumor about Potter County hicks, but you prove it correct. Sure they're upgrading "everything". But where does it leave the people paying $50 a month for their service? If they can't do the trick, then don't take the cash. I'm from Smethport, a small town 25 miles from Coudy, and we still don't have Adelphia. The local cable company went from TCI to AT&T and now it says Adelphia, but it's the same channels and service. I think my town is the "hey look, we're not a monopoly" example. How much further ahead does this leave us all? Not Much.

@prestige.net

I can't take it

Well, my Powerlink has sucked now for two months. I it worked pretty good in October and November, some of December... Email was gone for a few weeks, and then came the sync problems....

Now I intermittent service. It works sometimes, sometimes not. Sucks when you need to get stuff done, with deadlines, and can't count on the service.

Completely unacceptable. BUT WHAT CAN YOU DO, Adelphia has a monopoly over my county. I'd quickly switch to COMCAST if I could.

I hope my county (CARROLL) fines the hell out of them. I wouldn't mind if they PROACTIVELY gave me a discount, and were HONEST about a time line for fixing the problems. Hell, if things aren't fixed soon, I think I'm going to have to get dialup. At least it will be more reliable.

Re: I can't do anything about it!

Adelphia is the only thing available in our area - no choice other than 56K.

I've had problems for almost as long as I've had service. Speed was tested tonight on www.toast.com while on the phone with a customer rep (after a 30 minute wait) 384k!!
Then transferred to an "engineer" another 20 minute wait - testing on www.cable-modem.net -- 45K
OK, this is on the low end of cable 290-1090 but it is within the "acceptable range" No credit, no change, no concerns - just advised to come to this site & tweak my system so it downloads faster.

Don't know how that will fix lost e-mail, no e-mail connections, sometimes unbearably slow net connections. How's 2hrs+ to download IE 6.0??? That was with so many drop-off connections I lost count.

It will take a ruling that requires cable companies to maintain a minimum connection speed to resolve this. As long as they can tell you "it's better than a phone dial-up" you stand no chance as a consumer to win!!

Stafford VA - Similiar issue brewing.

tracerts.zip 1,359 bytes
(tracerts.rtf)
Hi, im in Stafford, VA

Adelphias for 7 months straight has given me nothing but

'I don't know'
'Maybe
'If then'
'We can't help'
'he'll tell you the same thing'

And this was comming from tier 2 'Senior Techs'
I talked to a few of their managers, and got the same thing, They simply will not listen.

For 7 months straight, at peak times, worse then 56k speeds...... as of late they actually sent us an email and letter saying they were 'upgrading' lol, they fixed our gateway, which seems to of been the problem, and im downloading at 700k u/l at 50k,(for 3 days) like it use to be (prestige.net, was the best isp, adelphia bought them) Then they switch us over to the adelphia routers, and take us off the ones in WASHINGTON, DC,(alter.net, hey bad rep, but i never pinged my main router over 30) in stafford, va washington is about 30 miles away...
HERE IS THE BEST PART

THEY ROUTE US THROUGH DALLAS TEXAS, HALF WAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY. Pinging 10> to my gateway, then 250 to dallas fort worth, texas ADELPHIA.NET router.

For 7 straight months, no answers at all, they run you around in circles, most likley the worst technical support in the business..... Whoever is organizing something, so they will finally listen to us, instead of give us the run around...

Adelphia will listen, but we have to make them, I am composing my traceroutes, and bandwith tests, download speeds as well, to show how bad the service is, I have traceroutes, and ping results, and compared them with AOL, and AOL has been winning, a sad sad day, in Broadband history. I plan on sending it to all the local news papers, and writing emails and letters to the local news stations, hoping one will take the story.

I have attached a small rtf file, of what it is like.

Please anyone with any input, drop me a line

Re: Stafford VA - Similiar issue brewing.

Another nice record to keep is their own ping test! I just spent 1.5hrs on the phone with tier 1&2 techs (again) and they finally got the ping to work - 79.22 So guess what - I qualify for another service call! They do keep all these records which when the time comes can be subpoena'd!

So I asked him why bother with another service call for the same problem I had back in November?? They didn't fix it then, what makes me believe they will fix it now???

I'm going to call them at least once a week until my speeds come up on a regular basis.

Uhhhmmmm? Just Cancel Service?

Is it that hard? If something didn't work why would you stay with it? People please it isn't that hard. I love how all these people just complain and complain like posting something on a website is going to solve your problems. Porn is being downloaded as fast as you would like it so life sucks. I know, I will keep using the service and go post stuff on a website. Wow, Hollys #$%^$ that is genious. If I went out and got a hooker and it took my money and slapped me in the face and left everytime, I think I would find something else. I don't feel sorry for any of you. Can you say....Stupid.
