Most likely, the every day person will save money renewing with them, as their rates are generally lower than the big 3's.
You say they are annoying and that the mailouts are being misinterpreted, well, I've got news for you, NSI and Register.com have done worse to me in charging me rediculous rates in the past. Not to mention their sub-par customer service.
Why don't you people visit the ICANN forum and see who is really getting the most complaints? Its not DRoA, its NSI.

DRoA's marketing tactics are deceptive in my opinion. That comes across to me as a company that is desperate and willing to do anything to get into your pocket. Show's me their focus is on the bottom line and not the customer. That's why I won't switch. Why doesn't DRoA use that same ink and paper to tells us why their services are better, more affordable and how their support is better than all others?? If they used that approach instead of sending me something that makes it appear I owe them money, I would consider using their services. First impressions are everything. DRoA did not do a good job with me. | |

I'm convinced though that their bottom line is the customer.
I did renew several domains with their canadian counterpart, and believe me, if DRoA are anything like the canadian office, customers should give them a chance.
If they hadn't sent me the notice in the mail, I'd still be paying NSI $35 USD a year. NSI never would have taken the time to mail me (first class) to give me such a low price offer. | |

My commercial NSI registered account info brings in floods of postal spam. The registrars haven't really dealt with any of this by updating an old system that broadcasts your information to anyone who wants it for whatever reason. | |

| I get these in the mail all the time too AND the e-mails. It's very confusing for some people, because they do look like bills. I sent them an e-mail asking them to stop sending the unsolicited e-mails and telling them nobody requested the transfers. They were actually very nice in their response and apologized. Go figure. For that domain at least... As for the snail mail versions, they keep coming.

| I live here I'm almost ashamed to be living in the same city as these folks (at least their mailing address). I too have received offers to transfer my domains' registrations to these people (and I use that term loosely). I just love how they put their domain name in their "bill;" they immediately went into my /etc/mail/deny file...so in other words, I refuse all email from these folks.
I'm quite happy with inexpensivedomains.com, thank you very much.

Make them pay for every since mail. I usually put junk mail from other companies in those envelops. Same thing with those telemarketers. Just put them on hold for as long as you can. That's the only way to hurt them. Waste their time like how they waste yours. | |

I usually pull the recyclable stuff out and write something to the effect of "stop sending non-recyclable junk mail" on the glossy crap, seal up the postage paid envelope and chuckle while I drop it in the mail box!

P.S. I was duly impressed by the American Flag motif of this mailing. Interesting to note they sent me 3 separate mailings for each of 3 domains I registered at the same time. That's gotta cost some money...

ICANN serves only in a technical coordination capacity, but their charter is to: quote:
"preserve the operational stability of the Internet; to promote competition; to achieve broad representation of global Internet communities; and develop policy through private-sector, bottom-up, consensus-based means."
I think controlling this sort of behavior on the part of registrars fits into the scope of their charter. As many of the registrars operate outside of the US it is hard for the "consumer law enforcement authorities" to do much about this in many cases. I believe that ICANN / InterNIC should be encouraged to adopt a policy prohibiting misleading behavior and deceptive practices of this nature.

After thinking about it, I said to myself: "Why would Register.com (the registrar with which I originally registered my domain name) give away my domain name to someone else?" Then I read this, and felt good I didn't fill out that paperwork.

A simple whois lookup will reveal all contact name and address information, as well as domain expiry information. So, really, they're doing a massive check for soon-to-be-expired domain names, then mailing to them.

| I just got one of those letters too and just thought my registrar had upped the prices. So I tore it up and threw it away. I would've realized it was a different company if I hadn't been talking to someone as I was quickly glancing over the letter. ;o)
As far as $25/yr being cheap, I find that pretty steep actually. One of the two registrars I'm currently using is only $8.95/yr and is even less if you pay for multiple years. »www.godaddy.com
I hope no one gets suckered in by these clowns. =o(
