$16 Muni Broadband
St. Paul suburb offers city-wide Wi-Fi
(old news - 06:28PM Wednesday May 26 2004)
tags: alternatives · municipal
Citizens of Chaska (a St. Paul, Minnesota suburb) can enjoy wireless broadband for $16 a month, thanks to a new municipal operation in the city. According to Tom's Hardware, the project is fed by a Gigabit fiber backbone, allowing all seven project access points to deliver up to 3Mbps of bi-directional bandwidth to each user, anywhere in the suburb. Each account comes with 10MB of web-space, five e-mail accounts, and a "promise" of 99.999% reliability.

99.999% reliability?

That's less than six minutes of downtime a year: this looks like it's going to be quite a challenge to meet.

you get what you pay for. there's no way you can operate 3x3 with that kinda uptime for under $20

Even if the uptime falls to 90 % who cares look at the price to speed ratio. Plus it falls on fiber, the only equipment that may fail off the go is probably the access points. Either which way thats a good start for the community. We need more like this to start.

Wouldn't go there.... our fiber ring at work went down and it turned out to be a patch wasn't applied properly allowing dirt to get in the ring. Fiber is not seemless.

When properly checked issues like that don't happen. What i mean is that fiber is the strongest point on the chain.

I guess you can chalk that mess up you all had to pilot error. In any fiber application you are taught to clean every connection no matter what before plugging in.

It's a muni.
What if the uptime is only 99% and the price goes up to $22 bucks a month.
Would you pass on that good deal??

Heh, Chaska is a decent town. You'll have to drive to the cities for any excitement though.

EDIT: Chaska is southwest of Minneapolis, it's NOT a St. Paul suburb.

If it were Comcast I would say they mean 99.999% uptime of their billing computer and lawyers, but with a muni, who knows. Sounds like a claim from someone unfamiliar with providing this type of service. Even consumers don't expect 99.999% uptime.

It was clean, ring had been up for a year... just somehow that patch came undone. Then of course you have fiber seeking backhoes.

Re: I'd like to know...

Prolly almost nothing if its on the city's fiber network which most of them have. Then those are linked to the major networks such as MCI's UUNet or Qwest. In Ohio its linked to the MSN network:)

That will go over like a lead balloon.

Don't get me wrong, I would love a connection like that and pay more for it. However, 3mb up and down for that price? I wonder how many users on P2P will it take to saturate that upload? I can see certain ports being blocked in order to keep that 3mb upstream speeds. Either that or the service will not meet expectations.

I remember my college days when the T3 internet network was saturated by 12 college students running P2P 24/7 sharing gigs of files.

It won't take many to saturate that fat pipe. If only users were more educated to shut down the P2P programs when they were done.

no way you can....

.... compare bandwidth starved horny college students to normal folks at home.

So it will do just fine.. unless they all run a speedtest at the same time.

St Paul Suburb???

Something that probably only the locals care about but... Chaska is most definitely NOT a St. Paul suburb. It has been and always will be a Minneapolis suburb.

As an aside, Chaska is home to Hazeltine National Golf Club (1992 U.S. Open), Paisley Park (hangout of aging rock star Prince), and Chaska Laudramat.

This whole broadband plan sounds like a little slice of communism. Sure it sounds good but its doomed to fail IMO. Who will be in charge of upkeep on this network? One could imagine the standards of service to be much lower than your local cable or dsl provider. Kind of like government cheese.

Cheap broadband not being run by some money grubbing cable or phone company. It must be crushed!

Nah, it'll be great... they just raise taxes and/or raise rates on other municipal services to pay for it.

Oh, I don't know. It sounds more like the muni power company that my town operates. Lower rates than the big electric co. in this state. Outages extremely rare.

We don't call this 'communism', we call it sound business practice. In fact, if communism connotes centralized planning, this is the exact opposite.

Oh, and the power company contributes to the town finances.

Compare that to a T1...

quote:
According to Edward Rerisi, Vice President of Research at ABI Research, TowerStream in New York is offering five megabits per second for about $500 per month. "Compare that to a T1 service typically offering only 1.5 megabits for about $900 a month. Companies like these offer better pricing, better speed, and fast provisioning to get the service up and running quickly," he said.
Oddly, I'd already made that comparison before I read the entire article. As much as I luv my $$$ T1 $$$ (Air Net Link rocks!!), I'd kick 'em to the curb without a second thought for a deal like that!

EXTRA EXTRA!!

Citizens of Chaska, Minnesota all simultaneously complained of nagging headaches, a doctor reported yesterday.
"It's all this Wi-Fi," the doctor added. "clearly, we are looking at some brain tumors and cancerous growth. It's a shame; I loved downloading music. Got some Bayer?"

A representative of the municipality could not be reached for comment.

Schools closed down today, as teachers kept complaining that they were not able to concentrate on teaching because of a dull pain in the center of their heads that didn't seem to go away.

"I think it's great," said an anonymous McNeil Consumer & Specialty Pharmaceuticals representative. "Business has never been better. People are buying Motrin like candy, and they have no idea that it won't work. Our organization has decided to invest an undisclosed amount to this Wi-Fi effort, in the hopes that it will garner interest statewide."

You, sir, are an idiot.

What sort of tree-hugging, neo-hippie, conspiracy theory magazine did you read that said cell tower levels of EM radiation cause an increased rate of cancer? For the love of God, don't move to Chaska. I would hate to share the bandwidth **ahem** I mean see you kill yourself for precedent setting, low cost broadband.

(disregard if you are kidding, I couldn't tell)

was a joke. Sorry. Figured I'd give people a laugh. I thought the whole "doctor downloading music" was a giveaway.
