Express Network Launch
Some stuttering upon availability announcement
(old news - 05:04PM Tuesday Apr 02 2002)
tags: business · wireless
Verizon, somewhat teasing the technophiles, first announced their "next gen" wireless service for Pittsburgh. They then announced the service would be available in Chicago and St. Louis as well. They've now announced the full list of thirteen more cities, with plans to roll the service out to 75 percent of the nation by year's end. Perhaps when Verizon launches 4G they can come up with a more creative name and have a slightly less vague availability announcement plan.

Now You See It Now You Don't

This just in. In a rather lame attempt to generate publicity for its new Express Network, Verizon has announced that it will add a fourteenth city to its list of cities.....East Jibip has reportedly been added as the next city the next gen service will be available in.

Smaller cities=less dense urban areas. If your potential customer base for the new service is smaller, then you can get away with a quick and dirty deployment (at least in the beginning).

Not necessarily. Most of Rochester's population is concentrated in the city itself, and the immediate ring of suburbs around it. The usual suburbanization of American cities goes on there, of course; however, it's still concentrated in that ring of close-in suburbs (Greece, Brighton, Irondequoit, etc.), a few suburbs that a couple interstate-equivalent highways run through (Webster, Ogden, Victor, etc.), and a few rich suburbs (e.g., the "P-Towns" - Penfield, Pittsford, Perinton).

Verizon Wireless is probably deploying in Rochester because:

1) As I mentioned, the area of deployment needed is fairly small, so "beta testing" (which is really what they're doing) is fairly manageable.

2) Rochester is the hometown of Frontier Cellular. Frontier Cellular had coverage over most of upstate New York; it was actually NYNEX/Bell Atlantic/whatever's "preferred" cellular provider in the area. Then, Bell Atlantic and GTE merged into Verizon, created Verizon Wireless, and Verizon Wireless bought Frontier Cellular. So, most of Verizon Wireless' upstate New York operations are still located in Rochester. Troubleshooting problems locally is easier than doing so remotely.

Does it even work???

With how their cell service and even my current CDPD service works.. I am sure it will not fly.. There are more dead spots just on my way home from work that renders the service useless unless you are at a fixed location.

Sorry but nice try Verizon.

Yes it does...somewhat

I just tried ExpressNEt today in Central NJ.

Run it on Sierra Wireless Card for laptop.

Easy Install.
Connected and stayed connected.

DSLReports Speed Test (running IE) showed me at around 50K throughput. This is a data connection.

I heard 70K to 100K is more typical.

My goal is to run Citrix over 50K wireless link so I can get Windows Apps running at near LAN like appearance.

At 50K, I still need to tweak it.

If you like Verizon, don't read this

These are the same people that called 640kbps/90kbps ADSL?

Well, I guess their "3G" they're offering is about the same level of speed of their DSL service.

Aren't they the company with a commercial where a guy is walking around with a cell phone asking "do you care yet?"

That's what I hear when the commercial come on.

Verizon's next move

They sure didn't wait very long. Last week they released their plans for Steeltown and like myself and a few others said here Verizon is releasing this product in their secondary markets first so hey can tweak it until it runs properly and then the big unveiling in New York and points elsewhere. They should do us a favor and wait until a technology is working well enough before releasing it. They went nuts with dsl and that was a disaster. I will never buy any sort of internet product from Verizon. They are a terrible company. I was jerked around by them for a long time and here now this isn't ready and it's being brought to market. Last week in the NYTimes was a piece about this already being sold in New York and not by Verizon. I think they're freaked that they are going to be left behind so instead of being the master of something they will offer bad service of all types of broadband access.. The author stated how he walks around the city with his lap top and has free internet. No one has blocks on their service. Verizon will have a field day charging parents roaming charges when their kids start using this.

Eh? More info please

The subject of this message is pointed at Verizon WIRELESS, not Verizon the landline pushers. So any problems you may have had with your landline DSL(Like I did) don't apply to the Express Network. I myself would like to see more wireless ventures attempt to bring more mobility to internet users. Although the speeds being reached at this time are almost on the pathetic side, I'm glad someones trying. Imagine setting up the webcam to post to your webcam live from the ski resort.
