| It's a Mad Mad World
"EverQuest" is one of the biggest financial success stories in the nascent world of online gaming, with more than 400,000 subscribers paying subscription fees...."
Now nobody go getting crazy, quitting their job and blowing off the fam in favor of a surreal, virtual reality only to whack himself like that 21 yr old epilepsy/emotionally distrubed patient did in Ohio(?) was it. Don't remember. Somebody help me out. That story was posted here last week.

Because that's how the article described the person in question. Ease up, man. If you become easily offended at terminology such as epilepsy or emotionally disturbed then don't read this forum. Well in that case, feel free to pass on the troll mascot to a really needy troll in need of a buddy on DSLR. You might start with LordComcast, for instance. -- If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. -T.J.

Epilepsy really has nothing to do with the situation for the story. I have it. I play games. Am I an addict and suicidal? Nope. The guy was basically a social outcast. He lived on his own, was overweight and worked for a pizza place. He spent hours upon hours playing Everquest. His mom tried to help him but couldn't. His mom is trying to sue the company that makes Everquest because he was addicted. If she wins then I'm sure we'll see a lot more lawsuits pop up once this game goes on PS2. Heck I'm sure more will pop up when people get divorced because of this game. Good thing. You wouldn't wanna go offending anyone's ultrasensitive feelings by mentioning reality now, would you. -- If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be. -T.J.

| Re: It's a Mad Mad World Good posts on both the subject of the poor kid and for responding to the insecure PC crowd. Thank goodness, the story didn't also mention the kid was Islamic, (he wasn't) as well as being epileptic and emotionally disturbed. Not only would you have been been probably banned from DSLR for just being the mailman but protesters would have shown up at your house to yell at you for being a bigot and someone who preaches hate just for quoting the Islamic part. All of this because you just quoted a story. You've got to love it.

If you think about this, the kid was probably being kept alive by Everquest. I don't think he killed himself just because of the game. -- That which does not kill us, makes us stranger.

| The person who killed himself was a 21 year old adult who was diagnosed by a licensed psychologist as suffering "depression and schizoid personality disorder, symptoms of which include a lack of desire for social relationships, little or no sex drive and limited range of emotions in a social settings." He also had epilepsy and suffered from seizures. (I assume he must have been taking several mind altering drugs for these conditions.)
The reason he committed suicide is obvious. It was because of his addiction and involvement in playing his computer game. What else could it be? Right?

| Re: Get a grip people! Good point. The BBC web site "Talking Point" forum recently asked for readers opinions on whether watching violence on TV caused increased violent behavior in children and in people in general. | We lost a employee at my work to EverQuest. Nice guy, but one day he stopped coming to work. He called in sick for a week straight then stopped calling. His roommate whom also worked here, said hegot so addicted to EverQuest that he got really depressed and gave up on life. He'd only play that game and do nothing else at that point. Not sure what happened to him after that. He gave up a really good paying job for that game though.
I've played it, its entertaining but nothing I could stomach for more then 2 hours at a time. Did meet lots of people in the game that claimed they played for 10-12 hours a day minimium, hard to believe people have nothing better to do with life. I'm lucky if i get 2 hours of free time to play a computer game.

| No PS2 n00bs in Everquest, please I hope the new PS2-bound network will be separate from the regular servers. The amount of arrogant 15 years old loot and stat w****s in the game is staggering as-is and is doing a lot to ruin the game for others, and I certainly hope this new game won't bring an influx of more of the same material into the regular game. It's supposed to be an RPG, but really is nothing more than a Diablo 2 style playground for these people. | |

| just say no I love to play computer games, and I've had dozens of people trying to "convince" me to play that one. I've never tried it. They always seem to come off to me like crack head zombies though. (not to say that Everquest players are drug abusers) It just seems that they try waaaaaay to hard to get me to start playing. Like maybe they all work for Sony or something, or maybe get a kickback for new people.
"Just try it man, its free at first, its greeeeeeat...."
Now that I think about it, it seems more like a crack dealer than a crackhead. Or maybe an occultist.

| i remember when i started playing EQ, it was insanely addictive, and very very fun for quite a while. I mentioned it to a few of my cousins, and before long a good portion of em were all playing the game...
a few years later i have long since stopped playing the game, it was fun and great entertainment value for the price but thats all it was to me. One of my relatives however is a full fledged "undead living zombie" now, wish i had never mentioned the game to him, he has almost no life outside of the game, he must play 12 hours a day.
it really is a fun game, but i dont see how they can make it work for a PS2 without listing a keyboard as being required to play it... the chat functions in the game are at its very core, you have to talk several NPCs to get quests, and you certainly have to be able to communicate with other players you go out in hunting parties with etc...

Finally I found some people who know what they are talking about!....I lost the love of my life to this stupid EverQuest game!...He stopped paying any attention to me. He played it after 5 months we were together. Then when he started to play it, he was never calling me,not even for my birthday, not even for our year anniversary, not even for valentine's day! we never went out on dates or anything. He totally ignored me. I love him with all my heart......and now hes addicted to this game! We were so happy..we were together for 1 year and 4 months....and this game got him......ugh i hate this game! i wish it never existed.....there's no one like him and i lost him. I wish everything was back the way it was and now all he does is stay on the damn computer and play that stupid EverQuest game! THAT GAME IS SO STUPID! THEY HAVE MARRIAGE CEREMONIES!!!!!!!! WTF? PEOPLE NEED TO GET A LIFE!!! There's one girl who is like 42 and has 3 kids, and all she does is stay on the computer allllll day, she's even married to some guy over the internet on this GAME! it's so sad. ugh it just makes me so mad that people can get so addicted to that game, and even play it so much they throw up! (like someone mentioned in one post) It's not just a game if it makes people that bad.....and destroys them from reality and what's more important in life. I hope people actually get to think twice about how much they need to get on with their life and stop playing this game...because if i had a mom, or a dad, who had an online "wife" or an online "husband" and played a damn game online all day long, and didn't pay any attention to me, then id go into some serious depression stages...like im sure most of these kids will who have mothers and fathers who stay online and play all day long. I'm not saying every one who plays this game is like that, but c'mon, if you've got a life...dont replace it with a game that's not even real and where people hide behind "toon" characters....

They said no patches required from what I read on eq.castersrealm.com
By the way.. the pics look awful.
The mother of that guy that killed himself is probably just angry at the world and is lashing out. She could probably use therapy instead of a law suit.. but who knows if a lawyer or someone got to her first and played on her emotions to do this.
The game is the eternal carrot on the stick reward. You will never feel like you achieved anything because there's always something better to get and to camp for 24 hours to hope that the creature spawns with the item when you kill it. --

| This makes me pissed off to the 3rd degree quote: Elizabeth Woolley, who says her son, Shawn, was addicted to EverQuest, wants to sue the makers.
Instead of blaming the makers of a video game for this, perhaps she needs to investigate where she failed as a mother.
So beware to anyone who wants to create a harmless video game. A mother of an emotionally disturbed teen may try to sue you.

| Foamy mother? i'm thinking she knows she failed as a mother because her son turned out epileptic, at least that is the first thing I blame her for and second What kind of person with no social skills wants to play a game like everquest where everything pretty much revolves around chatting and barely clad woodelves.
