Seems that some ISPs in the US should take a field trip to Canada to see how they provide reliable service. I just hope they remember to take notes.

I am from Florida so that is the first one that popped in my head. Of course broadband will be more popular up in the COLD NORTH.

| Re: Maybe it is all the Snow... akristov you do have the right idea. We up here in the cold north...well it is warm sometimes, some of us hate winter, other don't. But with most of our communites really spread out, I mean have you looked at a map? We have maybe 30,000,000 people in the entire country, the last cenus showed almost 7 million of them living in southern ontario. It's much easier to stay in contact online, then it is to call on the phone or drive.
From where I live it's 40mins to a city with more then 250,000 people, it's more then 1hr to a city with more then 1 million people. While you might think that's good, try someone who lives in saskatchawan. On a side note, in a lot of places there really isn't "much" to do. In my home town(35,000) no places for kids to go and hang out, cops arrest kids who skateboard, no skate parks, we have two bars and were still riding out the heavy industry slump.
Kids have the following to do, hang out downtown and loiter. Young adults have goto another city, or try to get into the only "two" bars we have.

I thought regulation hurt business. What's the problem Mr. Froman.

Not anymore. Telcos are privatized and the cable companies have no competition. Cable and DSL go head to head. Prices are going up now also, but still not to US levels. Bit caps are being introduced in some areas, as well as more profitable pricing plans.
The reason so many people have broadband has been a heavy marketing push for the last few years by both the cable companies and Telcos. Current deals include 1st 2 months free and free installation from the cable companies, and from the Telcos for DSL is either $19.95CDN a month for the 1st 6 months or a 1st month free, as well as free installation.
Check out some of the discussion in the Canadian Broadband forum or the Sympatico HSE forum. You will find a few unhappy people.
Still though, at present, for $43.95CDN a month (go find a currency converter - I'm not making this easy on you), I have a relatively stable 5000/1900 connection. I will not complain. -- Join Team Starfire SETI@Home. Put your unused clock cycles to work!

I can vouch for that. Bell Sympatico has been buying a huge amount of time here. Regular commercials and infomercials. I've seen the infomercial stripped virtually 5 days per week at times, but almost always at least once or twice per week. And remember, this is just at this one particular time - it could be on others as well. I don't think I've ever seen once a Verizon DSL commercial. -- In this world of sin and sorrow, there is always something to be thankful for; as for me, I rejoice that I am not a Republican. -- H.L. You gotta come west for my speeds because Shaw cable rocks. Taking the short rout like that will get you 2500/360 at best, and likely slower. -- Join Team Starfire SETI@Home. Put your unused clock cycles to work!

| well, even if he has cable...those upload speeds are a hell of a lot better than here in the U.S. Especially for the price. In vancouver, Shaw Cable runs speeds of 8000/1000, for 40 bucks canadian. from what i've heard, they kinda suck now, but with speeds like that for such a cheap price, you just can't beat it!
(I seriously hope they do somethin about the such poor speeds in the San Francisco Bay area. We are so close to silicon valley, yet get the shi**iest speeds...) [text was edited by author 2002-05-02 00:51:19]

| Re: Field Trip You have never to Canada. If you have been you would know why all Canadians want to be American's, here are a few reasons.
It is almost impossible to get murdered in Canada, I live in a major city, I could walk thur the worst part of town flashing $1000's and not be bother. But if we moved to the USA the chance of being murdered go up 20X, change of being robbed goes up 50X. How can anyone stand to live in such a safe place, where is the fun in it.
Education. 99% of all Canadians are able to read and write at a grade 9 level. In the USA only 50%
Poverty. Do you know how hard it to find a poor person to make fun of in Canada, the panhandles make more money then most people. Homeless people in NYC 500,000 this would make it one of Canada's large cities
Population of Canada 30 million, population of American's who have been in prison 35 million.
I have never meet a Canadian over age 16 who wanted to be a american.
The U.N. makes a survey every years the the 49 Industrial countries. In the last 5 years Canada has been #1 four times. The USA has been #48 all five years.

Do you know where I can find the entire list of this report? I think I found a mention of the report you mentioned here at this link, but it shows the US as #6 and not #48 for the year 2001. Another link I found had the US as #3 for the year 2000.

| It might be easier to name...... ....a country that is not ahead of the US in this arena. The countries who are way ahead abound. 1. South Korea 2. Canada 3. Belgium 4. Japan etc. etc. etc. The list continues to grow. Soon, China will have outpaced us. And don't tell me that "denser" population centers have anything to do with it. They have billions more in population to wire up than we do. I have read that countries like CROATIA even are making greater strides than we are. Soon, other countries that we consider third world will have passed us up. Some legislation is actually founded on the idea of improving the quality of life for citizens. Not to downplay the quality of life or standard of living here in the US, but it makes one think, does it not? I still love this country, and have defended it in wartime. I just don't like what goes on a lot of times in our government. I have a right to say that. So does anyone else. -- We've got our eye on the firmaments, our hand on the armaments, our heads full of arguments, and words for our monuments..... | |

| Why?
2 words: CORPORATE GREED!. other countries want to forridge ahead technologically while the usa wants to milk all this old hardware for all its worth. C'mon corporate america, the buffalo on that nickel has squawked enough. if providers to the north can give 5000/1900 for $42.95/mo, you can at least OFFER IT here in the usa. [yes i know OOL offers decent speeds/service but these are available in 3 states only as to where in canada its decent all around]

| No catchy title A big reason why most americans dont connect via a digital low latency connection such as cable or DSL is because ITS NOT AVAILABLE TO US. Do you think Adelphia will upgrade my lines anytime soon? Don't hold your breathe, hell my C/O is equipped with DSl but I live beyond the 18,000ft limit, some say prices are to blame, I say limitation is to blame. | |

| Here's a contributing problem...
...the aging, archaic-minded dinosaurs in power right now. Keep in mind, the people that call the shots in this country currently are technological yard-apes with no grasp on modern technology advances nor the ability to keep up with them.
The real hope for American government policy rests on the shoulders of the up and coming 20 and 30 year-olds who actually create and work with the technology in question.
I could drone on forever about the corporate greed, political corruption, republican corporate butt kissing, etc, et al. However, since no matter what I say really has an impact, and no matter how much I vote I will never be heard, I have to have faith in my peers to resolve this issue.
So take heart, fellow Americans--we'll get our widespread broadband in another 20 years or so. heh
My $.02.
