When police powers are expanded to water down the Bill of Rights and citizens are presumed guilty, and the arbitrary harvesting of electronic data is collected without anyone blinking an eye, then you have basically handed over to the government absolute power. It's not really a shocker that they're abusing this power. Absolute power corrupts absolutely. (oh yeah, that's right, this is America, no one paid attention in history class therefore, due to the sheeple factor, we are all doomed to repeat it.) -- Fast forwarding through, not watching, or muting commercials is stealing because CNN says so.

| YIKES From CNN
"The FBI software not only picked up the e-mails under the electronic surveillance of the FBI's target ... but also picked up e-mails on non-covered targets.
The FBI technical person was apparently so upset that he destroyed all the e-mail take," said an unidentified supervisor in an April 5, 2000, memo to M.E. "Spike" Bowman, the FBI's associate general counsel for national security issues. -- I bleed green. Go Celts!

| | | Re: YIKES So one day over two year ago Carnivore in a single incident intercepted what it was supposed to and something it wasn't. The FBI tech picked up on it right away and notified the boss. The problem was addressed. The improperly obtained email was destroyed.
Boy what a fiasco of a technological and civil rights breakdown. Big Brother and technology run amok! Frankly, I just can't see such a disaster prone scenario justifying a system that might effectively fight crime, terrorism and save lives.
Next thing you know we will find out that people have at times been wrongly arrested by the police and charged with a crime they didn't commit, that there are innocent people in jail and innocent people have been executed--or worse than just executed, had their civil rights violated by being wrongly executed. The wrongly executed part would, of course be the lesser of the two evils.
Two wrongs sure don't make a right but it doesn't make the two wrongs equal either. Perspective. It is all about perspectives--cost versus benefits. -- "Only the dead have seen the end of war." Plato

| | dbarc join:2000-01-22 Fort Wayne, IN | Re: YIKES I think the problem that will arise is that the event, which was described in a memo in March 2000, happened prior to July, 2000 testimony before Congress that 'We do not deploy (Carnivore) in a way that exceeds the court order'. It gets further complicated by an unnamed person from DOJ stating that the emails weren't destroyed. (What'd they do, simply 'undelete', meaning all the uncovered email was also recovered?)
I feel for the agent involved. He panicked, for whatever reason, and probably ends up being a scapegoat in this one. I think the above is where the eyes need to be focused. A procedure in place for 'when' events like that occur with a way to insure uncovered data isn't viewed/retained and fessing up to what happened vs. testimony that things like that would 'never happen' (the old 'never say never' argument) would help the credibility vs. hurting it which this will likely do; and at this time they need all the credibility they can get, unfortunately.

Of course I do, but that shouldn't concern you one way or the other, since this is a technology forum, not a personality test. [text was edited by author 2002-06-02 19:08:25]

rgoulet join:2000-10-27 Pittsburgh, PA | But they promised! But they promised that they would only peer into the lives of the bad guys. No law enforcement agency would ever over step the bounds it has publicly laid out for itself. I'm sure they feel terrible for having collected improper information and will rigorously enforce proper procedures to make sure this never happens again. I think we can all rest assured that the FBI is only just looking out for our best interests. Happy emailing!

They most likely got pissed off because Carnivore couldn't even filter out the spam passing through its system.

Carnivore doesn't work due to the X10 camera ads!! Both technologies are intrusive and faulty!! -- I bleed green. Go Celts!

| | | | Re: Crazy Just go to the Carnivore web site. It has the same cookie blocking feature that the X10 site does. You know where you click on the customer service link which takes you to a link which places a special X10 cookie on your computer that blocks all X10 pop up ads for 30 days. Except in this case, no carnivore for 30 days! | |

| Chicken Little syndrome My God--unbelievable. A mistake was made by a huge technological system, in this case Carnivore. We now know of at least one incident in the millions of "cycles" or incidents where Carnivore was doing what it is lawfully supposed to do, and that in at least one incident Carnivore inadvertently captured e-mail from people who were not under investigation....! It goofed! See it is completely unreliable!
The sky is falling, the sky is falling! Next there will be death squads and people disappearing! Remember what Benjamin Franklin said about freedom and security, (I think he said something!), or how it was in Nazi Germany? That is next! All of our political leaders are lying crooked people who care nothing about our security--this Patriot and Carnivore stuff is all solely about evil politicians and government types with their selfish interests and their pact with the devil to strip us of all of our civil rights! (All except Ashcroft--his pact has to be with the Anti-Christ because he is a fundamentalist Christian!) What other possible explanation could there be? There just isn't any other conclusion one can come to in these type of matters! No, wait maybe its really about oil! Yeah, thats it! Oil and the New World Order working with the Tri-Lateral Commission to use Eschelon and Eschelon 2 to bring us under the control of the UN and the European Union. "Essential" and "temporary"! Hmm, those two words sort of have an impact on the complete quote, don't they? -- "Only the dead have seen the end of war." Plato

| Re: Chicken Little syndrome i think that is the complete point of the quote. what gives it even more "oomph" is the word "little." it does not say complete safety, it says a "little temporary safety" which speaks volumes. i can only hope that what actually NEEDS to be done, IS being done. we will never really know for sure. trust the government? not in my lifetime and damn sure not ANY government.
