The one nice thing is that, as primary for LexisNexis home-based support in Colo. Spgs. (~80 users), and a subscriber myself, they're updating their physical plant to make it more attractive for sale. Now if they could just use a nicer NAT system our Nortel VPN clients would work....
Personally I get 2100 down/121 up and it's quite nice. I just hope they don't sell us to d***heads like Cox or @home.
|
| | | The evil part of me loves the fact Adelphia is about to crash since I am extremely mad how bad their service has been. First they force us to switch to digital by making the old analog service unviewable then the charge us more to use the digital cable. To save money and to get a new provider since Sprint ION was shutting down we got the complete package of cable and internet access. then the fun "we over sold our networks and you just happen to be one of the many people who get booted when everyone gets on" started happening. Needless to say in here (will do a review of the service soon) I got tired of it and finally went to Verizon since they could get us up and running quickly.
Ok enough of that for now. I hope they go down but not until I get to cancel out the service through them when I get the satilite installed soon.

I can't surf on my Cable Internet and I'm pissed.
|
| | My Adelphia Powerlink connection - Is it me... ... or is my connection getting even more intermittent than before?
Technical support and customer service in general have always sucked a mountain of pink - astounding hold times, stupid support staff, ridiculous processes, e.g., reconfirming your address, operating system, and modem ID # each and every time you call that week.
("Why, yes - you caught me fair and square, I've moved, downgraded my OS to Win 3.1 and exchanged modems since my call earlier today. How astute of you to catch me.")
The one bright side of the service was the connection. When it worked, it was fairly reliable and, while the upstream side was an unimpressive 128K, the downstream wowed me at an average 2MB.
Now, the connection goes away for minutes at a time. The sync light blinking cheerily like a Christmas tree for ten minutes or so and then, for no apparent reason, comes back to solid.
Sigh. This decade seemed so good in theory back when I was in the fourth grade watching first runs of the Jetsons. What a letdown.
Hopefully the successor company will suck somewhat less than the current Adelphia.

| | The Golden Pain in the Ass
Let's really look at issues here. First of all, would anyone have noticed anything Adelphia had done if ENRON had not existed? Probably not.
Was this $2 Billion or so amount of money ever reported on their bank statements? Probably so, in some obscure way.
What's ticking people off so much? The Rigas family is not saying a word, basically no one at Adelphia is saying a word. They're just going about their business.
Seeing how everyone across America thinks they're on a need to know basis, and no one knows jack stool, everyone has their drawers, panties, boxers and g-strings in a bunch and are hot under the collar.
What exactly is one of the biggest financial drains? We'll give the Rigas family mad prompts for the exhaustive paper trail they've left; in addition to their abundant shopping sprees and financial contribution to their kids "I want this" fund.
However, add to that the existing cable and internet systems. What people don't realize is there is new technology and old technology out there. The cost of upkeeping and upgrading is huge.
It's kind of like kicking out that old $200 refridgerator you bought 10 years ago, now you have to go out and buy a new one; respulsed to see that your new fridge now costs nearly double your old one.
So....Why sell California, Florida and Virginia? Basically these cities are years behind in their technology. The cost to upgrade is monumental. Does it make any rational sense to keep old technology in states where technology is booming? Probably not. Keep in mind too that it can't happen overnight and it takes money.
Which brings us back to square 1.
Was this $2 Billion or so amount of money ever reported on their bank statements? Probably so, in some obscure way; then why wasn't it investigated sooner? The person to ask...the Rigas family, of course. Where are they? Hiding would be my guess.
|
|
| Re: The Golden Pain in the Ass >> First of all, would anyone have noticed anything Adelphia had done if ENRON had not existed?
Yes!!
Adelphia is making Enron quickly look like a blip on the radar.
The actions that the Rigas family made behind the scenes are nothing short of raping the shareholders who provided them the means to live as they did.
$3.1B in loans!?! That's more money than some countries allocate for their federal budgets.
What did they spend THAT MUCH money on? The Sabres? Some woodlands? That's a drop in the bucket.

| $15,000 installlation fee I should have seen something like this happening when Adelphia told me I would have to pay $14,000 to $15,000 to have cable installed at my house, even though the cable line would have run past 22 houses to get to mine! As you can guess I've stuck with my poor 41.2 connection.
I'm hoping that Adelphia does go out of business. Here is my take on the situation. Adelphia has no cash left. They cant even make payments on their loans. Who thinks that they will be able to come up with cash to maintain or upgrade systems in the future, much less provide any support on those systems. It would be better to have them go out of business sooner rather than let them struggle along for months or years while the customers get screwed. My guess would be that if they go bankrupt their assets will be auctioned and other companies will be able buy up the pieces at rock bottom prices.
Perhaps if an Adelphia buy out occurs the new owners will be more receptive to running a line out to me. I wonder what they would say if I asked them to run a line out to me now.

As an engineer that has worked on the inside, I have repeatedly seen the cause of these failures and it points to a few specific areas - sales and marketing and management. People want too much return on their money too soon these days, aka. greed.
If only the technical people were allowed to build a technology based company, most things would work fine. However, all too often sales and marketing pushes some vaporware product out there based on the vendor supplied glossies only to find that the vendor's were also pushing a soon to be released feature. Truly smoke and mirrors. This is often complicated by national size networks with disparate technologies inter-operating due to acquisitions; the transactions, of which, the technology people are usually omitted in the decision process. The VP gets the fat bonus for closing the deal and the engineers are left to clean up the sh*t.
