Boucher Outlines 'Fair Use' Fight
Will intrioduce new legislation within week

Rep. Rich Boucher (D-Va.) has announced that he plans to introduce a bill that makes it illegal for record companies to include copy protection on CD's, in an attempt to protect consumer's "fair use rights". Boucher also announced plans to introduce a bill that would update the "outdated" laws governing the U.S. Copyright Office's Copyright Arbitration Royalty Panel (CARP). Sometimes I wonder

I would like to conduct a little poll of my own to find out what is going on with these law makers.

How many of you think that lawmakers accually know what an MP3 is?

Do you think that even if a lawmaker didnt know what an MP3 was let alone a computer but if Sony and the rest of the MPAA are paying them to get rid of it they would deem it bad?

I just wanna see what yall think

Well, at least Hatch and Boucher know what they are. That's a start.

I can all but guarantee you that my representative, The Idiotic, Needs to be Thrown Out of Office, Cynthia McKinney probably doesn't even know what a computer is, let alone MP3. I sure as hell hope the voters here can get it through their thick skulls that she is stupid and needs to be fired.

Boucher seems to be sincere in this. That's rather surprising for a democrat, going against the entertainment industry, that is.

Checks and balances?

Considering the gustapo-like tactics of late being used by companies in the name of "enforcement", I think some check and balances here are necessary.
I should not have my computer RUINED by some CD that I try to play on my CD-ROM drive.
I also don't agree with unaccountable snooping of my internet accounts, but that's another rant.
Also, current laws pertaining to copyright protections as well as consumer protections need to be re-examined in light of recent advances in technology and distribution.

A purpose

Well, it serves a purpose: it shows consumers that the RIAA no longer has carte blanche in the Senate. And it's good for cheap pop.

The one with real power is Sen. Leahy of Vermont. He is on record as saying he will not cripple the tech industry on behalf the record companies.

I hope an Enron-like scandal hits one of the major record companies.
