Most people don't know this, but all of Skype's voip traffic passes through a single 266 Mhz Celeron running Windows ME in a leased janitor's closet located somewhere within the Microsoft Campus in Redmond.
So obviously Microsoft is at fault in this case!

1 edit | Skype claims system returning; some users now working
»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070817/ap_···e_outage
Users of Skype in Asia and parts of Europe were able to log on and use the free phone service Friday, nearly 24 hours after a software bug hit the popular program.
The company, a division of online auction company eBay Inc., said that while some of its estimated 220 million users had reported successfully connecting, others still were unable to do so.
"We're on the road to recovery," the company said on its Heartbeat blog Friday morning. "Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day. An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know were not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday." A worldwide outage shows that Skype does not have the support staff it needs for such a large # of customers. And it also shows that their "Change Management" systems are inadequate. Under no circumstances should a change to software result in a worldwide outage. -- -- Internet News My BLOG My Web Page

| Nasty I am still down myself. It may be back but certainly not for me.
I had considered for a period of dropping my land line in favor of a combination of Skype and my cell phone. Glad I did not come to rely to heavily on Skype. I hope they offer some credit to those of us who have paid for Skypeout/Skypein service. They really should do a top to bottom review to make sure this never happens again and for such a long period of time. -- I support the right to keep and arm bears.

1 edit | Re: Nasty Last time my land line went out was an internal wiring issue and fixed in a day by myself - before that - don't remember the last time I had a POTS line go out on me in at least 10 years.
It will certainly depend on the area ands how lines are laid down - underground or on the pole. My experience is on the pole tends to be better as water has less of a chance to work thru the insulation when suspended on a pole.

| what happens wen skype connects Since I was under the impression that skype was p2p based, except for services such as skype out/in, I'm wondering what happens when skype connects to the network? I thought users themselves helped to relay calls and the like in such a way where this kind of outage couldn't happen? Has anybody even done a packet capture of them connecting to the skype network with their skype client to see what or where it connects to? I thought skype worked a bit like KazAA in that users on high speed uplinks would have supernode abilities, relaying file transfers, phone calls, and skype chats, where direct connections couldn't be made? Is this not how skype works? | |

| said by Richard B :Perhaps the problem is VOIP is a lousy technology. I've been to at least ten different places where that was shown to be untrue... VoIP isn't the problem as much as it is the network that it has to travel through that is.
For example, I did work with a company a couple of times that has offices/commercial rentals all over the Central Gulf Coast (LA and MS) with fractional T1s between the various locations and the main office with VoIP running over it and it is rock solid.
And with proper QoS settings on your edge router, you can get reliable VoIP performance as well, without the access providers mucking up the packets in transit. -- Prove it... Save the Internet Time (NTP) service, use the pool.

POTS is a thing of the past for a growing number of people. So you (and THEY) better get used to VOIP. I've yet to see a POTS line that could match the call quality of a VOIP provider, price not withstanding. And just FYI, POTS has outages too.
