220 Million Skype Users Cry Out
Global out(r)age
by Karl Bode 09:22AM Friday Aug 17 2007 Tipped by mblaszczyk See Profile
If you hadn't heard, Skype has been having problems since around 6am EST Thursday. The company posted to the Skype Blog yesterday, noting that the issue was a software problem that would be resolved "within 12 to 24 hours." The company then posted again last night to dispel rumors that the service was down due to a cyber attack:
quote:
"The Skype system has not crashed or been victim of a cyber attack. We love our customers too much to let that happen. This problem occurred because of a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user’s own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network. Rest assured that everyone at Skype is working around the clock"
Some users in our VoIP tech forum say it's working now; others say they still can't connect. The rare global outage gave bloggers a chance to blame closed source, Microsoft, the limitations of p2p, Russian hackers, networking, Homeland Security, lack of resources, VoIP itself, global warming, hangnails, subprime lending rates, France...

Take notice digital infidels. I have used my significant computer prowess to bring the Skype network to it's KNEES. You will never know who I am! I have used the power of my KrakZ and my WareZ to bring your beloved chat-net to a halt. I am the GOD of all that is computer.

You will never know my true identity, none of you have the computer Fung-shoiee to track me. I am like thief in the night. I bring your beloved network to it's knees in the name of George W Bush.

Wait, am I logged in? Shit......

Still a good deal

The only phone I have is a cell phone, but I have been shopping for a VOIP provider. Skype is still the #1 pick so far.

You must be new here. Microsoft is to blame for everything, regardless of the fact that they don't have anything to do with the problem.

Re: Microsoft?!??

Nawww I'm not new here, but I was *trying* to defend Microsoft in a case where it's definitely not their fault.

Oh and btw, I use Tiger as my primary OS at home (in a dual boot with XP) so I'm not an MS fanboy by any means.

Re: Microsoft?!??

Its always microsofts fault but in the end they dominate the market because every thing works on it but keeping it working is the chalanging part I have XP/Vista/Linux on this machine and use them for my needs and they go as followed XP then Linux then Microwaveing my HD finally Vista

I think it's obvious why Microsoft!

Most people don't know this, but all of Skype's voip traffic passes through a single 266 Mhz Celeron running Windows ME in a leased janitor's closet located somewhere within the Microsoft Campus in Redmond.

So obviously Microsoft is at fault in this case!

The sky is falling...

Skype is as reliable as they come. This was the first outage I can recall in the past 3 years. What track record do the other VOIP providers have?

There isn't a better value out there than Skype. Period.

If it's a complete outage I can't remember a time when my VoIP provider had a complete system failure. There have been instances where a server has gone down an users within a region may not have had service, but not a complete outage. I can't really tell from the write up if all customers were affected at some point or another, or if just a subset where.

Packet Shaping

Just wait till ALL the ISP's start packet shaping your VOIP packets. Then there will be a huge outcry by many folks. Then many people will cry out that there leaving there ISP's & that there ISP's can "go to hell"....Then they will realize they live in America and they have no other choice of ISP's.......

I know this is off topic sort of....but it's been bugging me.

Re: Packet Shaping

Were not at the point "yet" where they are shaping VOIP packets but trust me they will. And when you call them to complain about the static on your Vonage, Viatalk, etc phone service there response will be. "For as low as 39.99 a month you can use our service & you wont have those issues".

Skype claims system returning; some users now working

»news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070817/ap_···e_outage
Users of Skype in Asia and parts of Europe were able to log on and use the free phone service Friday, nearly 24 hours after a software bug hit the popular program.

The company, a division of online auction company eBay Inc., said that while some of its estimated 220 million users had reported successfully connecting, others still were unable to do so.

"We're on the road to recovery," the company said on its Heartbeat blog Friday morning. "Skype is stabilizing, but this process may continue throughout the day. An encouraging number of users can now use Skype once again. We know were not out of the woods yet, but we are in better shape now than we were yesterday."
A worldwide outage shows that Skype does not have the support staff it needs for such a large # of customers. And it also shows that their "Change Management" systems are inadequate. Under no circumstances should a change to software result in a worldwide outage.

Believe what you want, I'll believe what I want! This is a rock solid service that costs little or nothing. If people are crying that its ruining their business because they can't call then they are too stupid to be in business. You've got to have some kind of fallback because nothing, nothing, nothing is 100%.

Nasty

I am still down myself. It may be back but certainly not for me.

I had considered for a period of dropping my land line in favor of a combination of Skype and my cell phone. Glad I did not come to rely to heavily on Skype. I hope they offer some credit to those of us who have paid for Skypeout/Skypein service. They really should do a top to bottom review to make sure this never happens again and for such a long period of time.

Well, it's still down for me. I use it quite a bit but this outage is not the end of the world for me. For what I pay, it's no big deal. I'm sure it will be resolved soon. I still have my land line and cell. Wish my cell was $14.95/year!

Wait....people are claiming how "superior" Skype is compared to VoIP and POTS, that this is the *first* downtime that anyone has ever experienced with Skype.....and you're ready to bail out? So is it superior or not?

Got news for you....landlines have "downtime" too, hence the reason my daughter dumped Verizon POTS for Vonage (and cell as backup). She had two, three, four days of outages with Verizon every few months, and they weren't in much a a hurry to fix it without numerous complaint calls each time. She hasn't had one issue since she's had Vonage (over a year).

Re: Nasty

Last time my land line went out was an internal wiring issue and fixed in a day by myself - before that - don't remember the last time I had a POTS line go out on me in at least 10 years.

It will certainly depend on the area ands how lines are laid down - underground or on the pole. My experience is on the pole tends to be better as water has less of a chance to work thru the insulation when suspended on a pole.

skype yo yo

its been on and off all morring for me

the good news is when you DO connect if you make a call your call will stay connected even if you drop off the skype login server

atlest with Skype to Skype i was just talking to a friend of mine for the last 2 hours and i think skype loged in and out 10 times atlest

lirrie

@cox.net

what happens wen skype connects

Since I was under the impression that skype was p2p based, except for services such as skype out/in, I'm wondering what happens when skype connects to the network?
I thought users themselves helped to relay calls and the like in such a way where this kind of outage couldn't happen?
Has anybody even done a packet capture of them connecting to the skype network with their skype client to see what or where it connects to? I thought skype worked a bit like KazAA in that users on high speed uplinks would have supernode abilities, relaying file transfers, phone calls, and skype chats, where direct connections couldn't be made? Is this not how skype works?

VOIP is a lousy technolog

Perhaps the problem is VOIP is a lousy technology. Packet switching was never design to reliable connections. There is an allowance in TCIP for errors due to dropped packets. if one want reliable phone service one need to stick to POTS.
