DirecTV's 'Final Communication'
Certain areas get a deadline extension
by Karl Bode Thursday 30-Jan-2003 tags: dsl · business
As if a final notification from an alien life form to the humans below, the DirecTV website informs customers that "this will be our final communication." The "dark date" for customers in Verizon and SBC's service region is 2/28; BellSouth area subscribers have until 2/14. According to a DirecTV representative we spoke to, the company had 160,000 users when they announced closure, and still have 71,000 remaining on their network. 66% of customers who have disconnected have utilized the company's transition agreements. The customer notification is reprinted below.

-------------
FINAL NOTICE

Dear DIRECTV DSL Customer,
We previously notified you that the DIRECTV Broadband network, including your email services, would be operational until at least January 31, 2003.
We are now writing to inform you that we are beginning the process of turning off our network, which may have an immediate impact to your DIRECTV DSL service. The last day any portion of the DIRECTV Broadband network will be operational in your area is Friday, February 28, 2003. This is the last notice you will receive from DIRECTV Broadband.
If you have not transitioned your service at the point our network goes down, you will lose connectivity. If you wish to maintain a high-speed Internet connection, you should take action as quickly as possible before Feb. 28, 2003 to minimize disruption in, or loss of, your Internet service.
DIRECTV Broadband has announced a transition alliance with Verizon Online to allow you to change your high-speed Internet services to Verizon Online DSL or another ISP that uses Verizon as the underlying DSL provider. We recommend:

· Residential DIRECTV DSL subscribers who are interested in transitioning their DSL Internet service to Verizon Online DSL should call Verizon Online toll-free at 877-389-3278. Subscribers wishing to transition to Verizon Online DSL who need a static IP (Internet Protocol) address or business-grade DSL should call Verizon Online toll-free at 877-738-3278. For more information on Verizon Online DSL, go to »www.verizon.net/promo/welcometoverizon.

· If you are interested in transitioning your DSL Internet service to another ISP that uses Verizon as the underlying DSL provider, please contact that ISP as soon as possible to initiate the transition.

· If you plan to transition to Verizon Online DSL or to another ISP that uses Verizon as the underlying DSL provider, do NOT request a service disconnect from DIRECTV Broadband by utilizing the form we have provided on our Contact Us page. The service disconnect request is only for customers who have chosen to disconnect their DSL service entirely.

· Once DIRECTV Broadband has received confirmation that your service has been disconnected, we will cease billing you for your DIRECTV DSL service.

· The DIRECTV DSL gateway becomes your personal property and you will incur no penalty charges for a non-returned gateway.

It has been a pleasure to serve you and our top priority is to ensure a smooth transition of your high-speed Internet service. We will continue to update www.DIRECTVDSL.com with the latest information. Please do not reply to this email, as this email box is not being monitored.

Please note, if you have both DIRECTV and DIRECTV DSL, you will experience no change or disruption in your DIRECTV television service.

Sincerely,

DIRECTV Broadband Customer Care

They actually weren't a bad little service ... kind of sad to see them go. Oh well ... Life goes on.

I have to agree, they were a good service provider. I'm happy with what I have now, but it seemed like really smooth sailing for the year I had them.

Re: ie Bend over and take it

If you had Directv, the ILEC (BellSouth?) should be able to give you service since they were actually providing your DTV service. Have you asked them?

DTV only "rebranded" ILEC DSL so except for some freak situations any former DTV DSL customer can get DSL from their ILEC.

Re: Hello people...

A lot of people are in line release limbo, not to mention that DTV's distance limits were higher for DSL than most ILEC's. So a lot of people who could get DTV (because the ILEC was forced to provide the unbundled line) can't qualify for line sharing DSL.

the only reason I am still on Dtv is cause my cyberonic dsl doesn't work yet, and i have two phone lines.

I can tell you why I haven't turned off my DirecTV DSL service.

Verizon is my local CLEC. I tried to provision another DSL provider (not Verizon) and verizon refused to allow the other provider to place the order until such time as the "line was cleared". This means I have to cancel the service and wait a week, then I can provision with another non-Verizon provider.

Of course, no one would guarantee that I could actually get DSL from them if I were to cancel. So I choose to stay connected to DirecTVDSL until the last moment, wait a week and reprovision with someone else. If I can't get DSL from someone else, then at least I'll have had the DirecTV DSL for the maximum time. According to DirecTV's customer web site, it may continue to operate ("in my area") until as late as 28 Feb.

What they really mean

What they really mean is: we're still happily *billing* 71,000 customers. I was hotswapped January 16 and have been with Cyberonic for 14 days and was expecting a refund from DTV DSL for the two weeks I had already paid.

Instead, they charged my credit card for February. This on the same day they announce that their network is finally shutting down. Now I have to go through the hassle of disputing.

Needless to say, there's no phone number to call.
If they don't send an invoice for February, I can't even submit the required material to the credit card company.

I suppose what you have to do these days is get a credit card for every DSL provider, and cancel the card as soon as you hear the provider goes out of business.

You got that right!

I requested and received a disconnection of DTV service effective Jan. 2 and I still have not gotten a credit for January services.

You will evenutally be credited...while they're taking their sweet time in getting those credits out (it's all automated), even if there are disputes, the satellite side will take over those billing disputes.

How many of you remember when DirecTV _BOUGHT_ the DSL business?

It used to be called Telocity.

Re: Come on folks, this is the second time ...

Yeah....I signed up with Telocity in May of 2000...when they promised me 1.5 SDSL...needless to say, I only wound up with 416K, and then 768/128 when rhythms went under and I had to switch LEC's to Ameritech.

A comfy 8+ mil a month?

At $50 a month (low end I'm sure) they were raking in 8 million a month - 96 million year. And they couldn't keep a profit? Yikes! Not that I know how much it takes to operate DTV - but damn.

RIP Telocity/DirecTV DSL

I was among the many early Telocity subscribers. There were some bumps in the road but during the past twelve months my connection was rock solid and never dipped below 1200/212. Customer service was one of the best and they sincerely took care of their customers. On no less that two occasions I had modem failures and replacements were shipped out Overnight without any charge. While I'm exceedingly happy with my new ISP, DSLi I will miss Telocity/DirecTV DSL.

Realistically, are these modems worth anything? How proprietary can they make dsl modems?

I would hold on to the modem. Some of us are working on a use. More information to follow after the shut-down.

Telocity was my first adventure in broadband. Installation was flawless, customer service and tech support the couple of times I needed it were superb, and the service was flawless. After hearing about other people's nightmares with DSL setups, and now having to endure my own ongoing nightmare switching to Verizon, I have to admit I'll miss the luxury it was be a telocity customer. The whole interface was so much simpler I took it for granted, and now I miss it. 3 cheers for Telocity! As for DirecTV-If you couldn't turn a profit at $60 a month you don't deserve to be in business. To add insult to injury they couldn't find the time to release my line so we could get on with life. From what I'm hearing, I only hope they don't take another month's payment out. Screw the refund-just let me go!!! Damn you DirecTV!!!

Extend My What?

DirectTV initially announced 16 Jan as the grace period, then 31 Jan. I start another provider 1 Feb thinking "only a fool" would wait until the last moment to find another provider. DirectTV, however, charged my credit card for $49.99 on 29 Jan 03 for February service. Here is my issue; I want to be a bit proactive so I contract with another service provider for DTV's drop dead date, then they extend it and bill me.

When can I expect a refund of this $49.99? And why can't I contact them using the phone number listed for this transaction or through DTV Customer Care. Customer care is giving the wrong website address, their email bounces back, and their phone goes to an taped message that gives no information.

I can see doing business this way if they are shutting down ALL operations, but don't they want SatTV subscribers? I'm not inspired with the company's future prospects.

I'm glad DSLReports had the right info!

DirecTV doorstops on Ebay

Hey - I just saw some DirecTV modems for sale on Ebay. Now, I don't know much at all about DSL, but I thought you couldn't use the things for another network, so why would they sell them? (Although, after reading through the boards, I like the idea of exploding it.) But you don't have to return it, the following was on DirecTV's Customer FAQ, updated January 29, 2002:
===========================================
Q: Do I need to return the gateway?

A: It is not necessary to return the gateway and you will not be charged any fee for a non-returned gateway. As we are ceasing operations, we will not require these gateways to be returned. However, if you choose to return the gateway, we cannot reimburse you for any shipping/handling fees.

Q. Now that DIRECTV Broadband is closing, can I get the administrative password for the gateway?

A. With the closure of our operations, the DIRECTV DSL gateway becomes your personal property and you may keep it or dispose of it as you see fit. There is no need to return your gateway to DIRECTV Broadband. However, the technology associated with the development of the gateway, including the gateway password, remains proprietary. Consequently, we will not provide the gateway password.

================================================
So, at least you CAN blow it up if you like. Which I'm now thinking about doing, since my service was activated on December 11, after waiting for weeks!! I've got Verizon now, and it seems ok.

Ah well . . .
