DirecTV Curtain Call
Network goes down today
by jethrogump Friday 28-Feb-2003 tags: dsl · business
Today is the final curtain call for DirecTV's DSL network, a company official informing us that 30,000 of the original 160,000 subscribers still remain on the network, most of whom are from the Pacific Bell and Bell Atlantic service areas. Customers that haven't made arrangements for a new provider will of course be disconnected sometime during the day. The DirecTV support website will apparently remain operational for at least several more weeks to handle any remaining billing disputes (DirecTV bills a month in advance). You can pay your respects in our DirecTV forum, where users are busy sending their DirecTV gateways off with a bang.

People aren't dying here

Seriously, you're just losing some non-life-threatening service. People didn't die fighting some Satellite cause or something.

I almost shed a tear reading this article.

Re: People aren't dying here

And now let's move on to some news that people may actually care about. Thanks for repeating the news about a subpar provider that didn't have a good enough business plan to continue business. Must be a pretty boring day for DSLR to post this non-story as news.

No kidding...like @Home so quickly they forget that DTVDSL wasn't that great a service...this according to the GBU charts.

»Company entry - DIRECTV DSL (TM) (ISP Closed)

In a year or two...DTVDSL will be remembered as the end all be all of internet services. 1 billion Mb/s, never down, free hookers to every subscriber.

Please. It's a bummer whenever competition is lessened...but really...DTVDSL wasn't the God of providers and these articles act like they were.

Re: People aren't dying here

The GBU chart doesn't tell the full story, it just gives a general long term idea of how people felt about the service. A lot of the bad reviews came from bumpy transition experiences from the telocity takeover. I thought DTVDSL was a better than average provider that was certainly more attractive with it's static IP than the ILEC's PPPoE offering at the same monthly price.

Actually the GBU gives the most weight to the newest reviews. DTVDSL wasn't a stand-out provider according to the consensus of users who had it.

As a former DTV nee Telocity subscriber, I don't profess that it was the best service out there. However, before the demise of Northpoint and Rhythms CLECs, it had some of the sweetest DSL deals: typically 768/768 SDSL with static IP and a very reasonable AUP. Unfortunately, while a few were able to keep this (due to Worldcom's buyout of Rhythms network) most of the rest of us got switched to DTV-via-RBOCs, with 768/128 ADSL the norm. I don't blame DTV for making the deals with the RBOCs - it was probably the easiest thing for them to do, but the change in service made them about average compared to other DSL providers (plus the fact the price remained the same despite a lower service level...). Sure, the static IP and reasonable AUP remained, but it just wasn't as good.

So while the network that's being shut down now is nothing much to cry over (save for the fact that it's dumping a huge number of people on DSL), the old Telocity network was something to remember, and it's very doubtful in the DSL climate today that we'll see many services like that.

What up with comments like that? This is a broadband site and they are giving their readers news on the end of another service. There's no mention of any life threatening service being lost.

I was a very happy customer of DirecTV DSL and although I'm sad to see them go life goes on.

Have a good day!

Jeeze guys...cut me some slack.

I wrote the the "pay your respects" bit as a bit of fun....half in sarcasm....and I thought that the link where people were blowing up their gateways was funny....jeesh.....

I do think it's amazing that 30,000 people are still connected...

Connected...no I'm not surprised...dealing with Telcos...dying companies...line sharing...getting lines released...is a nightmare for many.

And seeing the @Home worshipers still wandering the forums...you know what we mean when we predict the future of DTVDSL's reputation. It's no reflection on the ed...ed.

I can't speak for the other 29,000 but I stayed connected because no other company would hook me up due to the distance from the CO (21,000ft). A fellow BBR member that works for SBC just helped me this week to get them to switch me over. I will have to wait for DirecTV DSL to release my connection (I hope with the shutdown that they issue a blanket release) so I can get broadband at home again.

I lost connection at home around 7AM this morning.

FWIW, when Northpoint went dark, a universal release document was posted on their website for all concerned parties to download or reference. Might want to check DTVDSL for the same.

good luck,
Dave

Charter has got to be the biggest joke of a company I have ever seen. I live just outside greenville and I had charter pipeline installed a few months back. This company offers very reliable service and its fairly fast, but there billing is a horror story. I have never delt with a company so disorganized when it comes to billing. I got on the phone with this company and they told me that I first owed them 311.00 for 3 months worth of service? I told them they had better find someone else to support there crack habit. They ironed it out and got it right after fighting on the phone with them for over 2 hours. Then I got the next months bill and it was the samething all over again. They didnt see where I had just paid them for 3 months service? They then say I owed them for 4 months service and unless payment could be rendered right then and there they were turning it off. I got discusted and told them turn the crap off then cause I wasnt paying them another cent. Then they called me on the phone a few months later saying they wanted to appologize for the misunderstanding and they had reviewed my records and noticed that they had owed me 70.00 for over payment. I asked the girl on the phone if they could simply send me my money back? She said no that once service had been paid for that there was no way of refunding it to me the only thing she could do was issue me a credit towards service. She said they would come back out to my house and reinstall my cable for free, so I said ok. They came out to my house and then said they had to collect 387.00 for a past due bill. I got Irate pissed off and told the guy he had 3 seconds to get out of my yard before I kicked the hell out of him. I would advise anyone who deals with charter to watch them they are a very dirty company. I now have earthlink dsl and I love it. They always get the billing right even though it took over a month to get my service ready to go. BUYER BEWARE OF CHARTER PIPELINE.
