AOL tinkers with broadband video IM'ing
(old news - 05:05PM Friday Apr 11 2003)
tags: Video · business
As part of their quest for more bandwidth intensive content, AOL is developing a video messaging system while trying to work around FCC restrictions. Terms of the Time Warner AOL merger restricted the company from developing certain broadband-based video instant messaging and other advanced services, as the company's size in the market could give it a monopolistic advantage.

In recent weeks the company has been working on eliminating those restrictions, and according to Instant Messaging Planet has been beta testing a new broadband "push-to-talk"-like video service. Customers use a webcam to record video of themselves, then forward it on to other AOL pals, thus skirting the regulations restricting "instant" video messaging. AOL so far hasn't given a date for when such a service would be launched officially.

Hey now, thats not a bad thing, thats a good thing!

I remember when AIM first got the Talk function, I was over at a friends and he was fooling with it. He went in a lesbian chat room and got some woman to talk dirty. That was funny as hell. He recorded the whole conversation and put it on a CD, sold 8 of them the next day for $3 each

They gonna bring this vidoe thing to Aim too?

Oh...the FCC won't let AOL "innovate?" Oh this *must* not be. Oh no! No one else can make webcam software because AOL has it.

this is not new.

for those who have logitech webcams, you can download ImVideo which is software which works with msn messanger or aol instant messanger to broadcast live streaming video just like a video conference to 1 or more people at the same time. depending on how good your connection is-thats how good your fps is. picture quality is 160x120 resolution with windows media video (similar to mpeg4) coding. it has microphone sound but usually the people i conference with flat out dont have the bandwidth. really isnt very good with a connection under 200k. its pretty neat if you do have a good connection. if microsoft was smart they'd powerplay their msn messanger with netmeeting.

AOL=iChat

As a Macmaniac I always follow the Apple rumor sites, and there's been a rumor for some time now that Apple would be upgrading their I-Chat IM app to include video. I-Chat is basically Apple's gloss on AOL's IM app, so I tend to think this AOL story has some credence.

Logitech IMVideo Companion Doesn't Work

I have the latest version of the IMVideo companion from Logtech (and even though I shouldn't have to say this, yes I have a Logitech QuickCam 4000 Pro) and it refuses to work with the latest version of AOL Instant Messenger. I'll send an invitation to somebody and it DOES bring up an IM window for that person... but that's it - nothing else ever shows up, it doesn't send an invitation, etc., etc. Let me know if anybody else DOESN'T experience this and maybe I can somehow fix it. For now, I'm forced to use Windows Messenger but that's alright.
