New Jersey Revises Cable Laws
Governor McGreevey raises cable service bar
by Karl Bode Wednesday 16-Apr-2003 tags: cable · legislation
Governor James McGreevey this week signed into law legislation that should give New Jersey residents more power when dealing with cable companies. The legislation would, according to this press release from the state itself, allow municipalities to increase their negotiating power by joining together to negotiate terms of service from a cable provider. The release suggests the legislation will better facilitate the delivery of broadband services to homes, schools, libraries and local government, though it fails to specify exactly how. Democratic Senate President Richard J. Codey, failing to be clever, suggests the legislation will tell cable providers to "'tune-in' to New Jersey residents."

Among the customer service improvements being pushed by the state the past several months, McGreevey has been urging cable companies to answer customer calls within 30 seconds, schedule service appointments within four-hour windows and offer credits to customers automatically when their service is disrupted for three hours or more.

I agree. But still better than nothing.

That definatly would have helped against Comcraps 33% increase.

South Jersey is a dump

God I used to live in a town called Somers Point in SJ. What a freakin dump. How can you live with the smell of bay? And to top it off the only IT jobs in SJ are at Radio Shack. Sorry for the rant.

Get A Life!

Most of NJ is beautiful, don't make it sound like the stay is all a dump. NJ does have it's "dumps" but the majority of the state is beautiful. Take a look at Bergen County where I live. It's the center of the enonomy for NJ, and offers tons of IT Jobs. Just because you lived in the boons, doesn't mean NJ can't offer a beautiful home and tons of IT jobs!

Yeah, the Western Essex area of Essex County is really nice also. BTW I used to live in Paramus. A+ area. Montclair is right next door, but you still have peaceful suburbia. I've never really been to South Jersey except for obviously Cape May and Atlantic City, but I still don't think I'd want to live there. Most of North Jersey is very nice though.

New Jersey isn't a dump...

Where I live in NJ (near the Great Swamp National Wildlife Preserve) there are deer, wild turkeys, groundhogs and hawks in my back yard. I've even seen a black bear wandering around on a few occasions. It's like having your own park... but it is only 45 minutes by train to Penn Station in NYC. All this, and DSL too!

Yeah, Jersey Is such a wonderful place to visit. I love north Jersey around the Newark Area the most. The beautiful countryside of Newark and Passiac just takes my breath away.

All kidding aside, I visit Jersey all the time and love it.

I dont like paying to swim at the beach though.

"...Bergen County...center of the enonomy for NJ." now there is a BS statement if I ever heard one. Didn't Sleezy McGreevey come from Bergen county? Morris County all the way! LOL

Re: South Jersey is a dump

Really, the problem with NJ is that it doesn't have a center! I mean, what can you say about a state whose motto is "A lot goes on between New York and Philadelphia"? It's sprawl. The old industrial centers (Newark, Paterson, Camden, etc.) were left to run down while foolish tax policies moved new (post-WWII) development to green field suburbs. So now it's wall to wall development the entire way from NY to PA. What used to be farms & fields are now chem-lawn and big box stores with big parking lots.

I do give them credit for coming up with a "Smart Growth" plan though. It was just about 30 years too late. And hey, even Newark bottomed out a couple of decades ago and doesn't look quite so bad these days.

When was the last time you were in New Jersey? They have the biggest airport in the tri-state area, yes even bigger than Phili, 2 pro football teams, 1 pro hockey team, 1 pro basketball team. Some of the largest corporations in the world are based in New Jersey, we have fine dining, a massive park system, a lot of active farm land, some beautiful developments, so on and so forth. There is a lot more here than the Turnpike and Parkway, it is just that people like you are prone to perpetuating the crap you stated above. Finally, dslreports is hosted in Parsippany, NJ.

Big deal....

Glad our legislators are spending time worrying about cable when our car insurance rates are out of control. We continue to loose insurance companies in NJ but hey, the Yankees are on Cablevision.....come on.....let's get our priorities straight.......

Re: Big deal....

It's funny. People here always complain about their insurance, but I've had no problems with Allstate. I don't pay much more than I did when I lived in PA - and I'm still paying less than people I know in the Philly area.

NJ has the highest insurance rates in the country (#2 is hawaii but that's because if you get in an accident there you're liable to drive your car off the island). North Jersey has substansially higher rates than south jersey. try to get insurance in hudson county you'll get charged like $2-4k a year for 1 car.

i wish i could get my car insured in another state, I hear the people in oregon only pay like $20 a month for car insurance. and vermont doesnt require insurance at all. Even California with all those roads and highways and police chases has suprisingly has low insurance rates.

it's funny when you live in a nice suburb yet full coverage insurance costs more here than it would in the worst crime ridden parts of nyc.

The state of New Jersey deserves a choice !

Instead of phone time etc.. How about a choice between cable providers. I'm too far for dsl and Comcrap is the only choice in town! I can't stand comcast, they are by far the worst in technical support and services aren't that great either. Heres to wishing all of NJ had OOL . How about municipal broadband? South Jersey btw is beautiful also I live in Washington Twp. Burbs...not the dumps

Re: The state of New Jersey deserves a choice !

"This law goes a long way toward removing the stronghold cable companies have had on New Jersey consumers for years," said Senator Joseph Suliga. "Under this law, municipalities will gain greater negotiating power and cable consumers will gain lower rates through increased competition. New Jersey residents have paid through the nose too long for cable services that reek of a monopoly."

Competition is KEY for all of New Jersey! I don't want comcast NO MORE!!!!!!!!

Oh cry me a river - I guess Jersey folks are the only ones who have to contend with Comcast's monopolistic behavior?
