Hype and the Phantom
Broadband gaming console piques curiosity
(old news - 01:01PM Wednesday Apr 30 2003)
tags: business · gaming
If you're looking for a lesson in creating hype via sadistically optimistic PR press releases, look no further than Infinium Labs and their coming broadband gaming console dubbed "The Phantom". Formed in late 2002, Infinium Labs quickly got eyes rolling with the announcement that they were joining the broadband gaming fray with a console they claimed would have 32,679 retail game titles available by 2003.

Though they've been vague in their interviews, the console appears to not simply be broadband capable, but broadband reliant; meaning it could essentially be some form of dumb terminal with high speed hardware that streams older PC games and console ports. The console should be unveiled this summer, and in the interim the company has launched a snazzy new website and has been leaking some additional details about the hardware.

Re: Incredible website!!!!!!

Yeah, I agree - for as "sophisticated" and tech-savy they're trying to be, you'd think they'd have more to download than a couple of wallpapers. LOL

Re: Comdex

Wouldn't the CES be a better place, or even E3?

Comdex is turning into both of those, with the mass departure of most "known" computer-related companies.

Hey, if they can produce it...

And it is as good as they hype it to be, I am there. I doubt any true gamer would NOT pick this up if they delivered on their promises and it was worth the price. Now lets see if they deliver.

Ginger Kiosk

Great! Now I have something to put next to muah scooter; it even looks like the color tone of the console will match that of my Ginger's Recharging Kiosk!

My friend still has his 3do, it was awesome at the time. It has some classic games, and had 3d! It had the first original Need for Speed, Return Fire, Star Control 2, and many other cool games.

I remember we would spend hours just trying to get the best crashes in need for speed, that game had the greatest crashes.

Good or Bad?

I don't see how anyone can make any real judgements about it as next to nothing is known about it. The specs, the games for it, what makes it truly better than others consoles. All of these questions have no answers to them. Only it's "state of the art" and "cutting edge" A lot of hype and no substance. Now if it's a fairly priced system and you can rent games at a good price I think I'd be up for it but if the games suck and the play is no better I think it'll flop. How good this is depends on things yet to be determined though.

Everything the Xbox and PS2 were *supposed* to be.

and aren't.... I think if they can deliver on what they say they will be, with some decent specs, you might just see some pretty decent sales.

Just remember, you can get a Lindows based PC at Wally Mart for 200 bucks now. 1.3 ghz celeron, 10 gb hard drive, lindows etc. Now if they can get a decent graphics card in it.... (have seen gf4 mx cards for as low as 50 bucks.., no not the greatest but it sure as heck would play say, bf1942 or even ut2003 at TV resolution just fine).

Broadband with 50,000 titles available. Now if they *REALLY* wanted to clinch it, make 1000 or 2000 cheapo titles available for free download and play, IE solitaire, tetris, all regular PC demos, and I think you have a force to be reckoned with. You going to tell me your average mom and dad, or grandpa and grandma wouldn't consider buying a gaming console with access to a couple of thousand free games? Hardcore PC gamers wouldn't touch it, but thats not all of America by far.

Course, if its something you can throw into a backpack and use anyplace they have a broadband connection (or LAN) and TV. Well, heck its a lot easier than transporting my mid tower case and 17 inch Proview.

It should be worth keepin a eye on...

this system is deffenitly worth keeping a eye on, if anyone bothered to read it said it will play and store pc games on it, and it comes preloaded with a few games. Or something along them lines...

Just saying keep a good eye on it couse you might just want one yourself, Once you see what it can do.
